District Hosts Successful Mayor's Third Annual Senior Symposium

Mayor Gray speaks to attendees at the Annual Senior Symposium

Mayor Vincent C. Gray opened the Mayor's Third Annual Senior Symposium held last week at the Hyatt Regency Hotel under the theme "SafeToday.Healthy Tomorrow."  Approximately 700 District residents age 60 and older, persons living with disabilities age 18 and older and their caregivers attended the event which featured workshops, information exhibits and more.

The month of May is observed annually as Older Americans Month to honor the contributions of older Americans to their communities. This year the theme is "Safe Today.Healthy Tomorrow." Caregivers Live Web Chat

The next D.C. Caregivers Online Chat at Noon on Tuesday, May 13, 12 p.m. will discuss caregiving for someone who has had a stroke.  Emotional support information will also be included in the chat. Log on for advice, resources and tips to assist you with your caregiving responsibilities. Asian and Pacific Islander Month Celebration

Asian Pacific Islander Month Celebration

Join Mayor Vincent C. Gray and the D.C. Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and in recognizing the 10th year anniversary of the Language Access Act.

Come and enjoy a night of lively performances featuring the finest local and international Asian artists, where tradition meets pop, and heartbeats echo drum beats! Traditional drum beats will harmonize with modern music and performances to create a wonderful experience for the eyes and ears.

Legal Counsel for the Elderly Wants to Hear from You

The District of Columbia has been funded by the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women to create services for older victims of abuse. Your ideas are important to us and can help us understand how to better serve DC seniors. This survey will inform the work of the District’s Collaborative Training & Response to Older Victims (DC TROV). DC TROV is a partnership with Network for Victim Recovery of DC, Legal Counsel for the Elderly, Adult Protective Services, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the United States Attorney’s Office for DC. D.C. Council Passes New Tax on Insurers to Pay for City's Health Insurance Marketplace

The D.C. Council unanimously passed emergency legislation Tuesday to require all health-related insurers in the District to help pay for the city’s health exchange whether they were able to participate in the marketplace or not. Read the full article in the Washington Business Journal here.

Laura Newland
Program Coordinator

Laura Newland, Program Coordinator will be the Special Assistant for Community Living with Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services (DMHHS). Laura is also an attorney with several years working in the District on behalf of older adults. She will be point on issues related to tax lien sales for vulnerable residents as well as working closely with our agencies on the work to transition residents to the community.
