I'm really sorry about that.

I had last saved at the start of the final month, so I literally had only three game days before your migration wave showed up. There was simply no way to do anything to save the migrants at all (I tried several times, not even tunnelling out to you was sufficient). I did toy with the idea of pretending the migration wave never happened and sparing you all death, but a few things made me dwarf you and let you die:

1: It played into my "Finally, competent goblins" narrative.
2: I had no intention of ever going out to get the bodies, so eventually there would have been "nameless" ghosts.
3: It just didn't feel honest. I reported every major event that happened in my turn and skipping one just didn't feel right.

I did agonise over it for some time, discussing with Leperflesh what I should do, but the decision was mine. I did provide enough information for you all to write journals if you wanted, and gave you all at least some time in the spotlight, which is better than a lot of other dwarves in this fortress got. Plus you got a gloriously pointless death, which is all a dwarf can ever ask for.

Remember, this is not necessarily the end. You can appeal to Overseer Seagoon to exhume your bodies and deposit them in the incinerator to get in the running to return later on as a ghost. It's not anywhere near as bad as you'd think :ghost:

It's cool. I knew what I was getting into and knew I could die quickly and without any fanfare at all. I just didn't expect it to be literally immediately. The fact that it was that fast at least added some unexpected dark humor to the whole thing.

"Hi Everybody!"
-6th Slate, 250-

We have been trying for months now to console poor Valtis. He wanders the halls without saying a word, the glimmer of passion for fine craftsdwarfship gone from his eyes. The poor fellow barely eats, and he may even be... sober. This hellish place truly does bring the finest of our kind to madness.

-16th Slate, 250-

The ghost of Erek has been laid to rest. Though the spirit was not a troublesome one, I feel safer knowing there are fewer ghosts lingering in our fortress. They spread whispers of their own. Whispers different from those of my friends.

-16th Slate, 250-

Alas, we were unable to help Valtis in time. He was found dead this morning near the mausoleum, the doctors saying he had died sober and miserable. Truly a sad end for any dwarf, but at least he was below the surface.

-21st Slate, 250-

A scream came from the dormitories today, loud enough that I could hear it echoing all the way down in my study. Investigating upstairs revealed that a dwarf named Skasion had rose as a ghost and was now lingering in the home of Athanboros. I simply shrugged and told them to deal with it themselves. My projects require my full attention. My friends tell me so much now, and it is so very hard to remember it all.

-27th Slate, 250-

It seems Athanboros took my advice to heart! Skasion was laid to rest in the mausoleum and will bother us no more. Additionally, a stroll through the less-populated areas of the fortress revealed a breach in the second cavern. I have ordered it sealed, lest some foul creature find its way into our tunnels. What madman thought such a hole was a good idea in the first place?

-8th Felsite, 250-

Whatever madness controlled Oberndorf proved to be too much for the child. Those who saw him said he started ranting and screaming things in some strange tongue. Though I ordered for him to be arrested, hoping he could be calmed down or cured, the militia had other ideas

They dealt with him with the precision and lethality months of practice (and a few demon kills) bring, shooting the poor lad down before Imp subdued him with his warhammer. I gave a stern lecture to them for the use of such force, but they said it was necessary "when one of'em goes like that". To think such madness is commonplace scares me. Will I be next? Ranting and screaming, attacking all I see? Or cowering away like Valtis? I must continue my studies, and hopefully stay sane. I am sane. I am sane. I am sane.

-14th Felsite, 250-

The guards spotted an elven caravan approaching through the hills today. I don't trust them. Never trust the tall folk. They worship wood and not the earth like we do. We will give them nothing, dare not trade with the lying tree-lov-Oooh, they brought wine and beer...

[several lines of maddening scribbles, symbols, and a few dwarven swearwords]

On a final note; Tiny Turtle gave birth to her fifth child today in the dining room. The girl, Memy, is happy and healthy. Though the event did put of a few onlookers off their meals.

-18th Felsite, 250-

I believe the others may be plotting something against me. I heard that a child was born today to Vetinari100 - a boy named Pagoon - but the circumstances were quite strange. It occurred in Gnu Sherriff's bedroom. They have no real relation, military or social, that I know of and I was surprised to learn quite a few people were in there with them. Including Queen Sankis herself. I do not know what words were spoken in that crowded bedroom, but I fear they know my secrets. I must hide my journal better when I am working. Must not let them have it. Must not let them know the wonderful things I have learned.

-20th Felsite, 250-
We have done it! At last we have reached Hell itself!

Now comes the second stage - reaching the surface of Hell safely. I have ordered a floor be built from around the staircase, which will then be walled off. We must be careful, lest the wild demons get in.

They aren't friendly like my pets, no not at all. Keep them out. Kill them. Don't let them near my pretty pets...

(Promontory is unhappy about the draft, and not being able to find someone in charge to yell at)
Yet another dwarf gives in to madness in this place. Promontory ranted and raved in loud shrill tones in the middle of the dorms today, as though attempting to call some unseen god to smite our home. We calmed him down with some alcohol and kind words, but I am somewhat concerned about allowing someone so mentally unstable to remain in the militia. They all succumb to their own madness eventually, anyway

-27th Felsite, 250-

Another healthy child born amongst socks! GrimRevenant gave birth to baby Snollygoster today in the stockpile. Hopefully her son won't follow Kalman's obscession with them.

-1st Hematite, 250-

It is now summer and a site has been laid down for a power station in the second cavern. The scouts say nothing can get at it, and the walls that make up the lower level's design should be sufficient to keep unwanted creatures from getting into our tunnels.

-12th Hematite, 250-

More murk erupts from the ground. It doesn't come from outside anymore, only from with in. It can't be because of my pets, because they're my friends. Good friends. Kind friends.. Thankfully the wind currents favour our domain and keep the murk blowing away from us.

-16th Hematite, 250-
There truly is no real justice in this place. A dwarf named Teddles was found dead in the brig early this morning of dehydration. I do not know what his crime had been, only that I doubt it deserved to die stone-cold sober and not even on solid stone floors.

-19th Hematite, 250-
More come from afar. Still more that are simply here for a 'better life', as though this place holds answers. I know it doesn't, for I have spent night and day looking for them. Not an answer. Nary a question, either. Yet my friends whisper such helpful new ideas to consider.... I heeded Gnu Sherrif's... eloquent requests for "more meatshields" and sent Drone and Halloween Jack off with him. ObMeiste was something of a troublesome arrival, however - he kept saying he was gonna "burns the dwarveses" in a terrible goblin voice. Someone had the good sense to smack him round the back of the head and tell him to knock it off. I hope it sticks - we don't need more mental illness here.

Lest they ask questions of my own. Do they fear my sanity? I am perfectly fine, dear journal. So very happy..

-27th Hematite, 250-

Sankis yet again mandates for more of her precious balista bolts. If I had the militia on my side, I'd have ensured she'd gotten a faceful of one long ago.

-28th Hematite, 250-

My suspicions are confirmed - they are against me. They're all against me. A kobold thief was spotted in the fortress late this afternoon, and ran head-first into a recruit named Tarox. He put up a token effort, 'letting' the thief escape with a very suspiciously-timed decision to go off-duty and return to his routine as a farmer rather than heed my orders and terminate the intruder.

None of them are trustworthy anymore, and I must listen carefully to my friends my only friends for help now. It's not paranoia if you're right...

-9th Malachite, 250-

Murk came again. Yet this time was different. Rain poured down around it and stifled the cloud before it could blossom from the earth. While the others kept inside, I carefully took a sample of this murked rainwater. Whatever it may bring, it can only help my studies.

-11th Malachite, 250-

Kalman still clutches to her lust for socks, telling us not to share them with outsiders. She is truly mad, dear journal. Fine socks, soft socks, coarse socks, itchy socks, Kalman cares not so long as she clutches them in her fingers and laughs away merrily.

-19th Malachite, 250-

More births means more of them against me. More of them to want what is in my nice safe head.

-2nd Galena, 250-
Even nature conspires against me. We were set for an initial test-run of the power generator, when it turned out there was a tower-cap growing right below the pump designated to prime the machine.

Note: :tizzy:

-13th Galena, 250-

Tragedy struck today. During testing of the new generator, Another Person was swept into the water flow. No, dear journal it was a dwarf named Another Person, not a second accident.

[The rest the page continues on with one side of an argument, the words "third base" and "who" being used far more than generally warranted, ending in half the page being torn out. The end of this argument is lost to the annals of history and a chicken that used the remains of the half-page as nesting material]

We watched helplessly as he was swept into the cavern lake by the flow of the pumps. According to reports, the onlookers took bets as to whether he'd reach the shore in time.

He did not.

Note: Whoops.

-19th Galena, 250-

The Humans have come with their wares. The others have been saying "it's nearly that time" to eachother, never hiding it from me, as though Sankis' revolution is a welcomed thing. I spend my days mostly in my chambers now and doing so only makes them more wary of me, muttering of screams and roars as though I am some evil monster. I hear no such sounds in my chambers, and fear they are turning mad themselves. My pets will protect me, surely....

-1st Limestone, 250-
I hear them at the doors, beating furiously on the stone as I write. I do not know what they want. They scream "my time is up", louder by the minute. They must intend to murder me and be done with it. I will not go.. I must study. Always study, so much to learn from listening to them.... They canNOT TAKE ME! I AM THE OVERSE

Alright, kids! That's a full year from Neddy Seagoon, and wasn't that an odd one! We've pierced hell, trapped demons in a box, lost a few dwarves, and had a few go insane.

Actually I guess that's entirely par for the course, eh?

But once again, it's time for a
Call for Overseers
Apply by filling out the form, here.
You can see the sheet here.

As always: I'm looking only for goons who have copious amounts of free time, and are at least somewhat familiar with running a mature Dwarf Fortress. There are hundreds of dwarves, dozens of levels of stuff, thousands of prepared meals, and tens of thousands of items being tracked by the game. So it's going to run fairly slowly on any computer. You'll need to provide the goons with updates every 48 hours or so, with some lenience in that value if you stay in good communication with me and produce good quality updates.

If you have not yet had a turn at the wheel, now is probably the time to sign up. You get priority over goons who have taken a turn in the past. We've had an ever-dwindling number of applicants. If you have had a turn, you don't get another one unless nobody who hasn't had a turn signs up.

I'll have the save up on the overseer site soon. I'll draw the next overseer in about 24 hours!

Also, another DF succession thread has started: Grandmirror: Dwarves in the Desert, run by goon Danny Glands. So go check that out if you want more dwarf fortress than you're getting now! He's using google forms for the dwarfing list, and picking randomly from among applicants for each year, so I guess this format is going to stick.

OK, I'm going to be your next, and last, Overseer. This is it! I decided by fiat. Nobody who hasn't had a turn wants a turn, and although LeJackal and Bad Munki both expressed interest, I think they will both be on board with my plans, which is to be a jerk and take over instead. Besides, my dwarf is still alive. I've been relentlessly fair about letting people have turns, no matter who they are, I think; but now I feel like it's time for me to exercise my duty as the caretaker of this here LP and make sure it doesn't just peter out in a sad and inconclusive way, like some dwarfly parody of LOST.

I think it's time, don't you? The thread has gone for over a year, we've dwarfed over 500 goons which is a huge increase over any previous DF LP, there's another DF succession LP going, and Toady is making signs like we'll probably get a new version of DF out in the next six months or so. And anyway I have some ideas of what I want to do.

Now, it's going to take me a little bit of time to get my first update out; I am moving my brother tomorrow, and the following weekend is looking pretty full too, but I think I'll manage. In the meantime, please voice your complaints if you think my tyrranical decision here is unwarranted.

I believe there's an infinite amount of demons down there unless Toady changed it. Mostly because more wander in over time.

The initial rush is trapped or dealt with, yes. I'm sure one will wander in that is perfectly capable of killing the fortress in a glorious fashion.

Hooray Leperflesh!

Please remember that Bronzestabbed is practically immune to tantrum spirals since no one present knows or cares about any other dwarf.

One thing I must insist on, and something I held off on doing because I was worried it might possibly have an effect on the viability of the save in the long run, is that you use DFhack to mark it as a monster lair. This will keep items from shifting about when the fortress falls/is abandoned, which will make visiting it in adventure mode more entertaining. Also, I had trouble crossing the sword gate bridge in adventure mode and generally dived off the cliffs overlooking the entrance to get inside, so maybe doing something about that right before you pull the trigger on the fortress would be a good idea.
