When was the last time The Secretary fo State, denounces a Coup to oust a Leftist Socialistic Dictator? That's exactly what Hillary Clinton stated, defending Honduran President, Manuel Zelaya.

PS: The CIA has been meddling in Honduras for the past 30 years.

By Will Weissert And Freddy Cuevas, Associated Press Writers
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Soldiers seized the national palace and sent President Manuel Zelaya into exile in Costa Rica on Sunday, hours before a disputed constitutional referendum. Zelaya, a leftist ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, said he was victim of a coup.
The Supreme Court said it was supporting the military in what it called a defense of democracy, and the Honduran ambassador to the Organization of American States said the military was planning to swear in Congressional President Roberto Micheletti to replace Zelaya.
Zelaya was arrested shortly before polls were to open in a referendum on whether to change the constitution. The Supreme Court ruled the referendum illegal and everyone from Congress to members of his own party opposed it. Critics said Zelaya wanted to remove limits to his re-election.
It was not immediately clear who was running the government. Tanks rolled through the streets and hundreds of soldiers with riot shields surrounded the presidential palace in the capital, Tegucigalpa.
The constitution mandates that the head of Congress -- Micheletti -- is next in line to the presidency, followed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
Zelaya, arriving at the airport in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, called the military action illegal.
"There is no way to justify an interruption of democracy, a coup d'etat," he said in a telephone call to the Venezuela-based Telesur television network. "This kidnapping is an extortion of the Honduran democratic system."
Zelaya said he would not recognize any de facto government and pledged to serve out his term, which ends in January. He said he would attend a scheduled meeting of Central American presidents in Nicaragua on Monday. He siad Chavez, which is also going, would provide transportation.
Chavez, who along with the Castros in Cuba is Zelaya's top ally, said Venezuela "is at battle" and put his military on alert.
President Barack Obama said he was "deeply concerned" by Zelaya's expulsion and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the arrest should be condemned.
"I call on all political and social actors in Honduras to respect democratic norms, the rule of law and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter," Obama's statement read.
Zelaya told Telesur that he was awoken by gunshots and the shouts of his security guards, whom he said resisted troops for at least 20 minutes. Still in his pajamas, he jumped out of bed and ducked behind an air conditioner to avoid flying bullets, he said.
He said eight or nine soldiers in masks escorted him onto an air force plane that took him to Costa Rica.
Chavez said troops in Honduras also temporarily detained the Venezuelan and Cuban ambassadors, beating them.
Zelaya called on Honduran soldiers to desist, urged citizens to take to the streets in peaceful protests, and asked Honduran police to protect demonstrators.
Zelaya ally Rafael Alegria, a labor leader, called for protests.
"We demand respect for the president's life," he told Honduran radio Cadena de Noticias. "And we will go out into the streets to defend what this has cost us: living in peace and tranquility."
About 100 Zelaya supporters, many wearing "Yes" T-shirts for the referendum, blocked the main street outside the gates to the palace, throwing rocks and insults at soldiers and shouting "Traitors! Traitors!"
"They kidnapped him like cowards," screamed Melissa Gaitan. Tears streamed down the face of the 21-year-old, who works at the government television station. "We have to rally the people to defend our president."
Honduras has a history of military coups: Soldiers overthrew elected presidents in 1963 and 1972. The military did not turn the government over to civilians until 1981, under U.S. pressure.
Micheletti has been one of the president's main opponents in the dispute over whether to hold the referendum. The head of the Supreme Court was also opposed to the non binding referendum, on whether to ask voters whether they want to convoke an assembly to rewrite the constitution.
It appeared that the vote would no longer take place.

Chavez: CIA Behind Coup in Honduras
Publicado: 28 de junio de 2009 / 1:51 pm (hora local)
Caracas, (Prensa Latina)-. Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez requested Sunday that US President Barack Obama, to be pronounced against the military coup in Honduras, which he considered is carried out with the participation of the Central Intelligence Agency.

In statements to television channel Telesur, Chavez stated that he rejected the coup "right from its bone marrow" and asked the Honduran military troops not to face the people that went out to the streets to request the return of President Manuel Zelaya.

"The United States has a lot to do with this, Obama should be pronounced to reject the coup right from the marrow," the Venezuelan leader stated.

He specified that elements, such as the fact that the Honduran press media are braodcasting cartoons instead of information, corresponds with the format of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for the coup.

The format is to misinform the people, if it were not for Telesur that is locating in the heroic level in this battle, the images of the coup would not be transmitting, Chavez said.

The South American leader assured that behind the coup, it is the bourgeoisie and the rich people that transformed Honduras into a banana republic, a political, military and terrorist base of the US and of the US empire.

Chávez added that the coup was caused because he wanted to consult the people and asked the military troops to meditate and not to generate a genocide.

He also said that the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), of which nine countries are already members, among them Honduras and Venezuela, are in consultation and elaborating an anticoup strategy.

Very strange indeed that Clinton would denounce the coup, her sincerity is suspect considering the history of US coups in the region. For a great read and perspective to the region, check out OVERTHROW, which details American sponsored coups over the years.

So how do you handle this one?

You want to believe that the CIA is responsible for overthrowing this South American government, but here you have Hillary Clinton denouncing the overthrow and saying that we should condemn the arrest. But condemning the arrest is interventionism just as much as it is for the CIA to overthrow the government. Hillary Clinton is part of the establishment, but so is the CIA.

If I conclude that the CIA is behind it as Chavez claims, but Hillary Clinton is practically on the same side as Chavez, then . . . hang on, I confused myself.

It is a delicate situation, the US is in a loss-loss situation PR wise no matter what. South american countries would cry fool and accuse the US of assisting the coup and being interventionist if it does not condemn the overthrow and even then many would accuse the US of having a black hand on the situation no matter what. As far as I can tell, I don't see an American black hand on this one, there was a tremendous political/constitutional crisis in Honduras as the result of the illegal referendum pushed by the ex-president. Many expected an escalation of the crisis. Venezuela has been a foreign actor meddling in Venezuela though, Chavez has gone as far as threatening to military intervene in the country to restore the ex-president.

American's condemnation is not out of love for the leftist president but by a change of policy in South America. The administration is trying to change its image of being interventionist in the region...

    That is my take.

There is nothing sinister or wrong about what happened in Honduras. The military did the right thing. The President's actions were unconstitutional. The Congress and the Supreme Court ruled against the President. Plus he fired the head of the military without just cause. In a democracy you don't do that. That's like Congress and the Supreme Court in our country overthrowing the government because he violated the Constitution. If anything our military and our leaders should be taking note.

Everyone wants to blame everyone on the CIA. It gets old. And some of you believe Chavez? LMAO !

If you believe in the rule of law, what does their Constitution say about removing their President? Is there an impeachment process?

Which is exactly why Hillary and Obama would denounce it. Heck, Obama violates the Constitution and fires people without cause all the time...

we should be asking ourselves here today

if somebody in the US were to stage a coup against Obama, would we as patriots do the provacateur's bidding and possibly get ourselves a worse president? or would we stand behind a democratically elected president and calmly see what's the future options before hurting anybody?

Obama, who handled Iran brilliantly, is just so clueless with Honduras. this time the good guy won, and the $#@! is out-with not one drop of American blood spilled.

The thing is you never know what is going on. It could be Obama ordered him removed and then condemns the removal. Who really knows.

I read about the whole situation on wikipedia today because the news here in Argentina is mostly talking about Michael Jackson, the recent election here in Argentina, and this situation in Honduras. According to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Ho...litical_crisis
It seems like every single country is condemning this coup. Am I the only person on Earth slightly in favor of it? If you read into the history of it, the president Zelaya went against the country's constitution, the Supreme Court condemned his actions and ordered his removal. So the military ousted him, flew him out to Costa Rica, and they swore in the Speaker of Parliament, who is the next legal president in the line of Succession. Everybody is saying that Zelaya is the only consitutional president of Honduras right now, but from how I see the situation, he violated the Constitution, despite of what the Supreme Court and other government leaders said, so the Court ordered his removal and they sworn in the next in line, all according to their Constitution. This is a good thing, this is something that should have been done in the US years ago I think.

What a crock. Get some facts. Read the Honduran Constitution.

This was no coup. This was the prevention of a coup. Zeleya was attempting an end run of the constitution and was removed from office by the Congress and the Supreme court of Honduras. Under the Honduran Constitution, a president may only serve a single term, and any effort to change or circumvent this term limit is considered treason.

What's really telling is how quickly and easily our current political leaders are willing to misrepresent the circumstances in Honduras. It is after all by world consensus a coup.
There is no Honduran Sovereignty, no Honduran Law, the UN, the OAS, Obama and Chavez will determine the president of Honduras - just watch.

The CIA did this - get real...misdirection at its best...jesus have we gotten stupid.

Now it all makes perfect sense. Obama and Clinton denounced the coup because.................

BOGOTA – The regime that ousted Manuel Zelaya in Honduras claimed Tuesday that the deposed president allowed tons of cocaine to be flown into the Central American country on its way to the United States.

"Every night, three or four Venezuelan-registered planes land without the permission of appropriate authorities and bring thousands of pounds ... and packages of money that are the fruit of drug trafficking," its foreign minister, Enrique Ortez, told CNN en Espanol.

"We have proof of all of this. Neighboring governments have it. The DEA has it," he added.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Rusty Payne in Washington said he could neither confirm nor deny a DEA

Wow, DEA Nails 2 countries in the same paragraph. I wonder how many of the planes are owned by CIA "assets"?

3-4 Planes... Every Day? hard to fathom that even with the CIA/US assistance.

It sounds like (Bill) Clinton and Haiti. He ordered US troops to bring back the democratically elected leftist leader, then asked the CIA for intelligence. The CIA was embarassed because the guys who couped the elected leader were CIA informants or guys with CIA connections and who were also real dirty in drug trafficking.

Of course, the CIA didn't order the coup, which is a significant difference. It just shows that our actions can have unintended consequences.
