Favorites Let's plays

I dunno about you but i rather enjoy Let's plays, if you don't know what that is when someone plays trough a game and records it with commentary. This is useful because it allows you to take a look at some games you would never touch otherwise or just laugh with the commentary. The largest archive of Let's plays is www.lparchive.org/LetsPlay/ which is a good place to start. Anyway my favorite let's plays are:

- Indigo Prophecy: The correct way to experience Indigo Prophecy

- Ripper: Watch spoony play this FMV adventure, it also has christopher walken, yep.

- Swat 4: Tasering old fat ladies has never been so much fun!

- Clock Tower 3: This game is pure stupid, therefore no better material for a let's play.

- No more heroes: i like the commentary, plus the Obama "interview" is pure gold.

- Persona 4: The Giant Bomb guys are extremely funny, too bad we will probably never get an endurance run again D:

So anyone else likes Let's plays? if so what are your favorites.

I really enjoyed the ones done by SA goons pokecapn, Kung Fu Jesus, Medibot and others for Sonic 2006 and Sonic Unleashed.

I also enjoy Kikoskia's LPs (which you can find on Youtube) if mostly for his funny voice, though thanks to him I now know of a few PC games which I would have loved back in the day, such as the X-Com and Lands of Lore series.

Leovinus' Final Fantasy VIII playthrough ensured I will never play that game.

The Resident Evil playthroughs by The Dark Id were fun as well.

Screenshot LPs FTW.

I started watching them a few months back as well.

The initial reason was to catch up with Metal Gear Solid's story before I play MGS4 myself. I never finished a Metal Gear game before, so I started with MGS3 which I can recommend.

From the same guys, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand was very humorous.

Kung-Fu Jesus's God Hand

I also like watching speed runs (if they have commentary) and CannibalK9's Grand Theft Auto 3: San Andreas run is pretty awesome. It does however leave out the cutscenes, but the high level of play is very well worth it.

Nice links guys, good stuff, thanks! also has any gaffer here has attempted doing a Let's Play? i tried one with Hidden and Dangerous but i only managed to upload a video of the first mission, i finished the second mission but adding the commentary took loads of time so i dropped it, maybe i'll finish it someday.

My favorites are the previously mentioned 50 Cent Blood on the Sand, Sonic 06, and Sonic Unleashed LPs as well as the Sonic and the Black Knight LP by the same crew as the Unleashed and 2006 ones.

I was not aware this existed, and thank you for introducing me to it.

EDIT: How could I forget. Sonic 1 Easy Mode. Just relax. Docfuture's other LPs are pretty great too.

This game is just insane.

I don't understand "Let's Play"... Is it something, like a series, done by specific people? Or is it done by any random person who wants to do it?

People play games and add their commentary. It could be one person, multiple people, informative, making fun of the game, mindless rambling, whatever.

And yeah, it's done by any random person who wants to do it.

I like the text/image ones, like what's on Let's Play Archive, but I can't stand to watch the ones on YouTube where people talk over them. I'd rather hear the game's audio and just read the author's comments. The Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou 1 one there was helpful in remembering the events of that game before I played the sequel. He recorded boss fights and certain story scenes (without audio commentary), which was also cool.

Of note, if you want to see bad "let's play" videos, look no further than retsupurae: http://www.youtube.com/user/retsupurae

I've subscribed to that channel on YouTube and have yet to be disappointed. Of a different note, I find that I enjoy the LPs from the people who head up Retsupurae: slowbeef, Diabetus, and Proteus.

I mean, I sat through and watched Proteus's Wing Commander Prophecy LP having never played a WC game before...ever. And it was awesome.

If you want a short one that is absolutely fucking hilarious, check out Diabetus and friends doing Captain Novolin. Just absolutely hilarious stuff.

The one that first introduced me to the world of LP, though, is also one of my favorites ever. Scorchy's SW: KOTOR II LP goes so much into the game makers at Obsidian, discusses the stuff that was cut, shows a deep knowledge of the KOTOR and Star Wars universe, and even after playing that game through and beating it, gave me a deeper appreciation for a game that I already really loved.

In better LPs, the narrator has a good sense for when to talk and when not to. There are a lot of really bad ones on YouTube, but the video ones on the LP Archive tend to be better.

What you might like are the ones where they use subtitles instead of talking. I'm not a huge fan of it, though.

I'd rather point out specific people than LPs. I'm watching them for the personalities and entertainment, not necessarily to watch the game being played. Also because of that, post commentary sucks and is not worth my time (it's bad enough that I'm watching nerds play a game, I don't need it to be pre-scripted).

Raocow and the Freelance Astronauts save me from utter boredom every single day.

Raocow particularly is insanely entertaining. No matter the game it's just fun to hear him talk.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
All of the Silent Hill "Lets Play" runs are incredibly funny and entertaining to go through, I remember really enjoying reading the final fantasy 8 one too.

Ah, I see. I've always wanted to do this kind of thing with a couple of specific games with some friends, but wasn't sure if it was an "anyone" thing or if it was something a specific person did.

Wow, that's all sorts of amazing.

They're usually pre-scripted?

Some people don't feel they're 'talented' enough to play and talk at the same time, so they talk over the video of their playthrough with jokes and stuff they thought up in an organized manner. It's just not entertaining in my opinion.

I got into LPs through a friend of mine who does his own (and is almost at 10000 subscribers, crazy). I then decided to do some myself and have been having quite some fun with that. I think it adds a nice incentive to beat some games that I normally wouldn't really play all that much and if people enjoy watching the videos that's a nice bonus too.

The "best" ones are when people do that and they forget what they did in their video, and their commentary ends up sounding like some random third party watching the video and commenting instead of the person who actually played the thing.

I would say most LPs are not scripted, but there are exceptions.

Spoony for example writes his dialogue before he records, but he also does heavy editing.

Many I've watched are edited by the runner and then they do commentary on top later. That's usually my favorite because it still allows the runner to cut out tedious sections or speed them up.

Then there are a few that do commentary while playing the game, which usually only works if you have at least one guest commentator to fill the space when the runner is doing something tricky.

They're trying *really* hard to be funny, but they just aren't.

So now I know to avoid anything by these dudes.

Will check out some from that archive, though. I'd like to actually watch something worth playing that *also* has good commentary(whether its funny or informed or whatever - nothing annoying, though).

I've run across some on Youtube that were atrocious. Some people just shouldn't broadcast their loser-ish selves on the internet, cuz its a waste of the world's goddamn time.

How in the name of all that is holy has this thread gone on so long without a single mention of Boatmurdered? Quite possibly the best Let's Play in the history of existence, this infamous text-and-pictures Dwarf Fortress LP (organized by SomethingAwful) has to be read to be believed.

No prior Dwarf Fortress knowledge needed to enjoy the LP.

There's a text/image one for the Quest for Glory series that I really like. The author goes out of his way to show the class-exclusive scenes in each game and provides links to the music for each of the scenes. He shows off some of the better deaths too.

I'm subscribed to so many LP channels in this regard it is ridiculous. There's some I want to do myself at some point, but unsure as to when as well as needing to get to grips with gameplay recording period on this new machine.

HCBailly is pretty much ace though in the outstanding majority of his LP's in terms of informative commentary, some funny bits, and generally clearing out the entirety of a game in question. I wish I could clone him and unleash him on several various PC and fantranslated games just to have things happen that much faster.

NesralZ had an utterly captivating, unnarrated playthrough of Wizardry 8 awhile back and will do another run with what should be a completely different party somewhere down the line, maybe after his current Tron LP is finished.

Anything by HellfireComms, they are awesome. And NTom64 even posts here at GAF too!

We don't do LP's, but I appreciate the compliment :lol

I second the pokecapn plug. The 06 Let's Play was amazing.

The links for most of my favorites have already been posted here, but what the hell..

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake by Slowbeef - Pretty much one of the funniest LPs I have ever read. You would think that knowing the truth of the Zanzibar Land stuff that was only vaguely hinted at in MGS would be enlightening... Instead, it makes things so much worse.

Persona 4 Endurance Run by Giant Bomb - These guys need to do another Endurance Run, stat. Jeff x Vinny Comedy Duo for life.

Any LP by The Dark Id (Resident Evil 0-4 & Dead Aim, and Dirge of Cerberus).

Leonvius' LP of FF8

Any LP by Spoony (Phantasmagoria 2, Ripper, SWAT 4, etc).

Luftius' Megami Tensei LPs are usually rather informative. Sure, he doesn't really have much of a speaking voice and his LPs don't have that much humor, but they're usually pretty good and complete regardless.

I'm currently doing an LP of the 2-player Secret of Evermore hack with an LPer named Brickroad. It's not done yet though, but I suggest watching his LPs on Super Metroid and various Mega Man titles among others.

There's no such things as a "favorite let's play".

I don't understand people there. When I play a game, I'm not commenting for myself as I play it. If I want to watch a walkthrough it's because I want to see and hear it like it would be the videogame playing before my eyes and not like I have an annoying buddy always commenting when I play.

This thread is pretty great, by the way. It's giving me something interesting to do this Sunday morning before the Super Bowl.

People from GAF should team up and do one somehow... Like with one of those voice chat services.

To each his or her own. Let's Play's are, to me, better with bad games or random, silly games... Not about watching a walkthrough.

I tend to prefer subtitled Let's Plays because they let the game shine without some goofball babbling over it, but there have been some with voiced commentary that I enjoyed as well. Far too many people seem to abuse them as some kind of video blog and start talking about their private lives to fill dead air, which never fails to make me cringe. Not a fan of retsuprae either as it was born out of a few members on the Something Awful Let's Play forum's apparent need to point out how much Youtube LPs sucked, it seems a bit condescending and silly.
