No. Nobles make their production demands based on what they like, and they don't seem to care how much is in the fortress already. I think export restrictions only happen if you actually have some of the item in stock, but I'm not sure about that. If there is an upper bound at which a noble becomes satisfied with production of her favorite thing, I've never reached it.

Not as far as I know, but you very quickly start running out of materials thanks to diminishing returns.

I usually sell mandated items to caravans (assuming no embargo) and use the money to buy more raw materials. Failing that there's ignoring mandates and keeping well-stocked prisons and neutered Hammerers and of course there's the 'happy accident' option.

We have sufficient copper to make bolts from that too if we want a bit more punch on our bolts.

If you look at that graphic and add it up, we only have about 120 ballista arrows. We could make ten a month for years and not come remotely close to running out of potential room to store them, so it's not really an issue.

12th Limestone, 250

The Rainy Boots have a barracks from which I ordered the removal of an Ogress in a cage but they also have a larger barracks which is assigned for sleeping and storage of items as well as training.

An excess of barracks seems wasteful. I ordered squads train, sleep, and store equipment in one barracks and ordered chests and beds constructed there also.

13th Limestone

The outdoors is strewn with hundreds of items of worth including the belongings of fallen dwarves and goblins and merchants.

I was writing orders to recover all such things when reports of fiendish murk in the southeast came. It is a recollection of a danger so familiar few dwarves ever speak of it any more. Yet the areas of danger are now well understood.

Dwarves and stray dogs and children might be prevented from harm with a barrier. Gnu Sheriff in Town Enshalonul is captain of the guard and therefore advisor regarding defense. I sought that dwarf and located her hauling a bin of copper bars in the tunnel leading to the old exile burrow of those who revered Ugath.

“I propose to build walls” I told her.
“We have walls” she said but did not seem unreceptive.
“I propose to build walls to prevent unwary dwarves to trespass where fiendish murks are found” I said.
“Will dwarves die building your walls?” she asked and I considered. “If masons are caught outside while goblins attack they might” I admitted.
“Station two squads with masons, one with crossbows and one with axes” she told me and hefted her bin. “Make the walls wide and put towers so dwarves can walk atop and see danger approach and fire upon enemies,” she added, “and put gates where migrants can come through with drawbridges of stone that raise from a lever pulled inside the fortress.”

It occurred that Gnu Sheriff in Town had therefore approved the plan as she disappeared down the corridor.

Four more barracks were located by stockpile records of ammunition storage. Two are archery ranges I left and two are redundant barracks I decommissioned.

15th Limestone
Soho Joe Tuloncog has her twenty-fifth birthday and must now admit to being an adult. Being healthy (although fat) I issued a labor assignment of masonry.

Two more barracks are located adjacent the trade depot where human merchants still loiter.

I think every overseer of Bronzestabbed has commissioned new barracks without removing old. A human was overheard announcing they would soon depart.

20th Limestone
There have been no idle dwarves for days. I have given too many jobs at once atop existing jobs not canceled for 250 working dwarves to accomplish in three weeks. The merchants from Saquarpesor have embarked on their journey.

It is a good time to cease the labor of giving orders to record a conversation.

In the late summer of 250 “Sankis” Uzolbesmar, queen of the Rare Ship, sought the dwarf Leperfish in Bronzestabbed.

The Queen sat in a diorite throne and indicated I should sit opposite and we consumed simple plump helmets and I recalled a day years ago when I first met this dwarf. On that day I did not know she was Queen because of a deception on her part to call herself agent of the Queen.

“A Queen does not need apologize for deceptions” she told me now. I was surprised that Sankis would recall a deception to a mere bookkeeper but I did not interrupt. “And I will not apologize now, Leperfish, but I will gift you an explanation.”
I chewed and nodded.
“In those days as today the wilderness between the mountain homes is not safe” she said. “When the Queen officially traveled from the capital Paintfamous she therefore must bring guards and for the guards and herself a wagon to carry provisions and animals to haul the wagon and food for hauling animals. And barons and nobles are curious regarding a Queen's purpose and therefore endeavor to accompany and primp the Queen and gain favor thereby.”
“I desired in 235 to travel to Shipshook alone. I deceived the court at Paintfamous although certain dwarves close to me I trusted to pretend I had withdrawn with some small indisposition while I was away.”

“And what of the dangers of the wilderness?” I asked.

“Hah!” Sankis laughed. “You, Leperfish, student of history. What do you know of “Sankis” Uzolbesmar?

I thought and then understood and recalled History briefly.
“Zulban Oilypulleys was a dwarf born in 90. She was the only daughter of Kol Whirledblockades and Datan Shieldtalks.”
“In 102, Zulban became a member of The Denomination of Skulls.”
The queen always worshiped Ugath since coming of age, that was well known.
“In 102, Zulban became a metalsmith in Shottome.”
“In 105, Zulban married Onget Metallabors.”
Sankis sighed then, and stared at a half-chewed plump helmet and I could not interpret her face but I thought suddenly of course a Queen might miss her consort even after 145 years.
“In 105, Zulban stopped being a metalsmith in Shottome.”
“In 105, Zulban became a fisherdwarf in Metalpages.”
“In 180, Zulban began scouting the area around Metalpages.”
Sankis looked up to see my eyes. I was reciting what she had intended.
“In the midspring of 189, the minotaur Kafek Goldenblazes the Perplexing Chaos attacked Zulban.”
“In the midspring of 189, the minotaur Kafek Goldenblazes the Perplexing Chaos fought with Zulban. While defeated, the latter escaped unscathed.”
She nodded quickly and I endeavored to finish without omitting importance.
“In 225, Zulban became the queen of The Rare Ship.”
“In 225, Zulban settled in Paintfamous.”
“In the midspring of 241, Zulban settled in Bronzestabbed.” I finished.
After a moment's pause to sip Longland beer, I said “you scouted in the wilderness for forty five years?”
“Yes, Leperfish. Oh, not continuously: I stopped at this mountainhome and that fortress, sometimes for a few days to rest and sometimes for a few months to work. And although I mostly stayed to the area around Metalpages, I traveled to most of The Rare Ship.”
“And you escaped an attack by a famous minotaur,” I added.
“Yes. Escaped is the correct word. I am an adequate marksdwarf but I have little skill beyond that and a marksdwarf is not likely to slay a minotaur before it charges and slays the marksdwarf first. So you see, Leperfish, I did not fear to go alone from Paintfamous to Shipshook, or anywhere else. I was safer alone, in fact; I traveled faster than a caravan and less visibly. No rumor went ahead of me to invite ambush by an enemy. And, of course, I used a different name, 'Sankis', when I encountered dwarves and needed a name that was not Zulban.”

“So you gave me this name to avoid danger to yourself the Queen when we met” I offered, and Sankis nodded.
“Aye, Leperfish. I was not recognized. It is rare for any dwarf to travel more than once in a lifetime, you know! Very few dwarves outside of Paintfamous or Metalpages would recognize my face. Even those at Shottome might not, for I was very young when I left and now I am very old.”

I counted then and realized what was in front of me. “You are one hundred and sixty!” I said, too loudly in surprise and the Queen laughed. Suddenly I saw the deep lines in her face, her white hair, the thinness of her body. The queen was old, among the oldest dwarves I have ever known.

“I'm going to die soon, Leperfish” she said when she had stopped laughing, and there was a sharpness in her cobalt eyes. “Oh, don't be shocked. Of course I am, perhaps this year, perhaps next, perhaps a little more, none can say. But soon.”

“Perhaps,” I admitted, although it did not feel right to discuss the death of a Queen but it would also be wrong to contradict a Queen, especially when she is correct.

That was when Queen “Sankis” truly shocked me. “I mean to see The Rare Ship saved before I do,” she said, “...and that is why you must Oversee Bronzestabbed again.”

Alas, in his limited sense of vision, Toady limits the game to a maximum of ten squads, with a maximum of ten dwarfs each. It is not possible to maintain more than 100 dwarves in arms, unless you manually add and remove dwarfs from squads constantly to rotate them.

The only saves that are up on the overseer site are the annual saves. However, I've been collecting seasonal saves from all overseers and I hope to host them all once the game is over. That should let anyone jump in to the game at almost any historical point if they want to see what was going on at the time, or re-play certain events. Some things might not be reproduceable, of course, you might load a save where a certain titan shows up in two months in the LP and never have that titan show up, for example. But quarterly saves was the most I felt I could reasonably ask of the overseers to preserve for us so it'll have to do.

8 FPS is a real drag. I ran dfhack clean all, and it scrubbed several thousand items clean of filth, but that does not seem to have affected FPS at all.

In the longer term there's somethings I can maybe do to optimise things but for now it's pretty slow going. Of course, it doesn't help that I only had an hour this evening to put into this.

Tomorrow I'll have several hours free in the evening so I'm hoping to get a quality update out then. Once again I apologize for the lengthy delays. :(

I'm currently running an AMD Athlon II X3 440 processor at 3.00GHz, with win7 64 and 4GB of memory. DF is generally processor limited, but processors don't go a whole lot faster than 3 GHz per core, they just add more cores.

Pathfinding is an issue so I'm doing things in game right now like caging up free-roaming nongrazers, and then I'd like to wall off unused tunnels and stuff, but having no labor free is a problem. And they're spamming job cancellations so if I can figure out where that's coming from, it should improve labor allocation and then I can get on with FPS optimization.

Yes, as I just figured out a little while ago by reading about Bug 1340. The last entry is a workaround developed by our very own Markus_cz, but since it was used on Gemclod which was from a previous version of DF, I'm not 100% confident it will still work.

May 17, 2007

I got two thirds of an update pounded out and FPS is up to around 9 or 10.

I suspect a lot of the job cancellation spam is due to the fact that when a dwarf is going to store something in a bin in a stockpile, they go to the stockpile, get the bin, carry it to the item to be stored, store it, and then carry the bin back to the stockpile and store the bin. The entire time the bin is being carried, it, and anything in it, become inaccessible.

However, this can't be all of it. Leperfish just canceled a job to cage a large creature due to inaccessibility; and the only large creatures I've ordered caged are kittens and puppies that just got born. How could they be inaccessible?

I'll be able to do a lot of optimization work in the fortress once I have some spare labor, but it seems that's going to take a little while. In the meantime I'll see what I can do about demon pathfinding.

23rd Limestone, 250
The manager Tiny Turtle Monangaban informs a huge number of jobs are always canceled every day and do I want to be informed of this daily. It seems a former Overseer instructed not to inform of constant canceled jobs which is a good way to avoid irritation but also a failure to confront some serious problem.

Why are so many jobs canceled due to inaccessible items?

I instructed all items located behind walls in caverns forbidden. Also lost workshops and stockpiles likely located in a hidden prison with the corpses of two child dwarfs forbidden. Also dwarves not to retrieve refuse and the corpses of vermin from outdoors. Additionally dwarves not to loom every thread (adamantine threads being loomed and used for socks is a staggering extravagance but also to preserve thread for doctors) and not to gather webs from caverns that no dwarf can access.

25th Limestone
Tiny Turtle informs on the 22nd Limestone 40 job cancellations due to inaccessible items and on the 24th of limestone 32 job cancellations despite new orders of forbidding. It is a mystery. I request specifics about what jobs are canceled but Tiny Turtle informs “it does not work like that.”

1st Sandstone
The beginning of the month marks a changing of militia dwarfs on and off duty.

Those coming off move through halls with hollow eyes and grim countenance. Those going on duty grit teeth and drag feet. Although one month is not very long it is plain the burden of the duty is heavy for many.

I can think of no simple way to alleviate. A shortest span of practice or duty is one month according to records. Bronzestabbed must train dwarves to replace those that have fallen. They must face danger so dwarves with no familiarity with an axe or a shield need not die instead. A trained dwarf has a chance an untrained dwarf does not.

I am fat and my hands are soft. I assigned myself mining duty. It would be a penance but in truth I enjoyed mining and will enjoy it again.

2nd Sandstone
A ballista arrow having just been completed I receive a written mandate from Sankis that three ballista arrows are required.

When I spoke with the Queen she was not obviously irrational but we do not need more ballista arrows and she should know this. I cannot argue with a written mandate however. I informed Spermy Smurf three more ballista arrows with much sighing and eyes rolled between us.

“Rezam” Logemablel who I saw yesterday going to duty is throwing a tantrum.

He yells about rotten clothing but although some items he is wearing are old he is wearing two pairs trousers two pairs gloves two robes a hood a shirt a bronze mail shirt one pair mittens one pair leather shoes and a copper helm. I do not think he is cold but angry about recruitment.

4th Sandstone
Rezam has calmed down and agreed to stop canceling orders to pick up equipment for mandatory combat training duty. HUNDREDHOGS who reported this confided Rezam has no friends nor a wife which is another reason.

9th Sandstone
Finding numerous wardogs scampering unowned I first thought to chain in some place but then recalled many years ago Internet Kraken's companion Urist. I assigned wardogs to several militia members including a recruit with no friends. I cannot assign a dwarf friend or I would but a war mutt is a better friend than nothing.

12th Sandstone
“ProfessorGroove” Vushvucar is the chief medical dwarf and is married to HUNDREDHOGS. I found no report regarding sick or injured dwarfs so I sought ProfessorGroove and located him planting seeds in outdoor farms.

I do not know this dwarf well but although he is purported having superior medical skills he is not like my friend Markus_cz given he seems more interested in farming than duties of his position.

“Truth is, I haven't diagnosed in years,” he admitted to me “but yes, there's some injuries and such.”

I requested a detailed report which was delivered later and I suspect prepared by medical dwarves not named ProfessorGroove.

Internet Kraken has nerve damage in his left foot from wounds received in 239 and was brought to rest by LeJackal in 244 but without report of why. While his foot healed Internet Kraken used a crutch but now is fully recovered although we still have not discussed the events of his year as Overseer.

Chickenfrogdwarf has an infection of the liver but is considered “no health problems”. ProfessorGroove evaluated him three years ago and was given bandages the following month. Despite infection he is competent archer in the Voxel Squad.

Teim is blind. Last year every part of his body was considered injured by Ramichk who evaluated and cleaned Teim. Nopants removed rotten tissue from the mouth but no further treatment was considered.

Teim slew the forgotten beast Utes and is known for hideous scars covering his skin but today he participated in combat training because he remains an active member of the militia.

JimmyTheD cannot stand owing to missing right foot but her skill with a crutch is as legendary as her facility carving bone items and farming.

Rurik has an infection, cannot stand without a crutch owing to severe injury of the left foot and has sensory and nerve damage there. Treatment was last performed a dozen years ago by dwarves long dead save the surgeon Captain_Duck and bone doctor Natty Ninefingers.

Rurik's facility with a crutch is as legendary as Teims but otherwise Rurik is no better than novice at any skill. He created the artifact sheeps wool mask Ushulazin Nakaseggut, “Realmswatches the Enjoyable Gullies” which along with an infected foot has apparently excused him from any imposed duty to become useful.

Vaga42Bond is blind. His medical report closely matches that of Teim.

He is famous for slaying five goblins, a kobold, and the forgotten beast Avuz Echospurts, and for the hideous scars covering his skin and for his legendary proficiency at weaving, which art he still performs with perfection. He is still enrolled in the military as member of The Walled Skies.

Macha the bowyer's left foot is gone and is another legendary user of the crutch. She is famous for slaying a goblin, an ogre, a crundle, and a magma crab.

Rawkking has an infection in her right shoulder but is considered “no health problems.” She was treated for extensive injuries in 244 including the shoulder and had a broken skull repaired in 247. She is renowned for slaying eight ogres in 240. She is still enrolled in the military as member of The Bronze Delights.

The clothier Synthorange is reported ability to grasp somewhat impaired but no treatment or history is recorded. I located Synthorange storing items in the main stockpile and recorded her ability to grasp is impaired due to her right hand being gone. She slew two goblins in 244 as well as a crundle. She is expert marksdwarf but “needs someone to help reload” and is not currently enrolled in the militia.

Tag Plastic the furnace operator has identical record of ability to grasp impaired but no treatment or history. She was organizing a dodging demonstration in the barracks of the One-Way Outs and has no left hand. She is listed adequate with the adamantine axe which she grips with strong right hand.

The clothier Dirty Frank is blind and also cannot stand without crutch and has infected lung.

Of nine dwarves at Bronzestabbed legendary with a crutch Dirty Frank is considered absolute best. Dirty Frank sustained injuries at least twice or three times.

Like Teim and Vaga42Bond this dwarf is covered in hideous scars but unlike them Dirty Frank is also fat. He slew two ogres and a goblin in 241 and more recently an elf in 249. He is still enrolled in the One-Way Outs.

The hammerer Zebrin Tongsdented the Walled Stockade of Dusk is another legendary crutcher listed with grasp and standing ability impaired and motor and sensory nerve damage and infection.

Arteries in her left foot and lower leg remain torn and her spleen is infected. She was treated in 243, 246 and 247 for serious injuries.

Zebrin is legendary for slaying three goblins, three ogres, the forgotten beast Vucar Wavedsunk, and administering lethal punishment to the dwarves Bularin, Dallbun, and Nerem. Her left hand is gone. She has five pet cats and one cat fiendish murk zombie kept in a cage in her bedroom. Zebrin is terrifying.

Larz Ularuzol the legendary gem cutter is listed a left lower arm infection from a wound evaluated cleaned sutured and dressed in 243.

The axedwarf Terror Storm has a torn artery in the right hand treated in 246. Her wound is scarred but appears thankfully healed. She is active with The Mountainous Bows.

OniElem Orsharerith the metalcrafter uses a crutch due to injury in 246 in which he lost his entire left leg. He was evaluated 11th Galena this year by Captain_Duck for no reported reason or recorded treatment. His legendary skill with the crutch is only surpassed by that of Dirty Frank. He is not enrolled in a military squad.

NoPants the surgeon is legendary with the crutch due to wounds received in 246 including her left lower leg gone. She killed giant creatures in The Humorous Plain before coming to Bronzestabbed and was militia in 246 but now her speardwarf skill is rusty because a master surgeon is more valuable.

w00tmonger the hunter is blind and covered in scars and her left foot is gone. She lost her foot in 246 and is legendary with her crutch. Although she has hunted many creatures in The Named Hill and a few at Bronzestabbed she is a talented but not remarkable marksdwarf alarmingly still a member of the Walled Skies.

Doc Aquatic the herbalist is blind. In 249 she was brought to bed, evaluated, and cleaned, and rotten tissue excised from her mouth. She bears horrible scars over her entire body. She has only novice skills at combat yet is currently enrolled in the Voxel Squad as a crossbow dwarf.

Fanzay Likotison is a competent swordsdwarf whose record indicates the ability to grasp somewhat impaired. It is due to his right arm is gone. He is otherwise healthy and was never treated other than with bed rest in 247. Fanzay is active and able member of The Mountainous Bows.

Rabbity Thing is a master strand extractor and is blind. It is a now familiar report: covered in terrible scars, evaluated and cleaned in 249 and rotten tissue excised from mouth. She has never been a military dwarf.

The final record is distressing to me.
“Bad Munki” Asteshgim is a planter and is blind. He is not my friend Bad Munki Bomreknitig, but another dwarf covered in scars and recorded rotten tissue excised from mouth in 249. He is of less than novice familiarity with the spear and fighting but is still member of the militia in the One-Way Outs.

My lost friend Bad Munki Bomreknitig was born on the 1st of Malachite in the year 177. He was an ardent worshipper of Ugath Muckcrypts and a worshipper of Igest the Silken Embrace. He arrived at Bronzestabbed on the 1st of Granite in the year 236 and was struck down by the brush titan Kovest defending this fortress valiantly and was reduced to ashes too dispersed to bury. His noble death was witnessed by several dwarfs.

“Bad Munki” Asteshgim was born on the 27th of Slate in the year 164. He is a dubious worshipper of Osram and no other god. He arrived at Bronzestabbed on the 21st of Hematite in the year 248. I have not spoken to him but I looked at him soon after he immigrated and I surmised he chose the name of a hero to honor my friend when asked to have a name although that is a guess. If so he has done honor to my friend by serving in a militia but he is reportedly not a good fighter and being blind I do not think he will become one.

Three things are plain from the medical reports. First several dwarves were blinded and horribly scarred with rot in their mouths to be cut out in 249. In 249 Pickled Tink was Overseer through summer. In the late summer of 249 a forgotten beast Utes rampaged within Bronzestabbed dismembering several dwarves and many more dwarves became sick and their bodies rotted from within. Dirty Frank was among those that did battle with it.

I do not know for certain but I suspect this beast produced a dust or sickness as once told to me by Markus_cz. Many dwarves became ill and perhaps some dwarves rot in stomach led to rot in the mouth and also scars and blindness. I wish my friend was still alive. This chief medical dwarf ProfessorGroove is not useful for diagnosing Bronzestabbed or murks or the Rare Ship like Markus was.
The vomit that encrusted Bronzestabbed for years been cleaned and any dust with it and no dwarves now become sick. But it is baffling several dwarves blinded are still ordered to serve. Why would not militia recruits despair if their longer-serving comrades are blinded cripples! What demonstration of competence can be made of that? How fearful must civilians and militia alike be to see a blinded cripple train with a steel crossbow to fight things from hell?

It is disgrace. I will reform this militia immediately.

Doing the savehack to stop demonic pathing issues has worked and got me from 8-9 FPS up to 11-12 FPS which makes a significant difference. I have some more options but for the moment the biggest issues I think are the job cancellation spam (which I'm working on - it's stupidly difficult to find out what job has been canceled, since the Announcement list lets you zoom to the dwarf who canceled the job instead of the job that was canceled. I'm using the [J]obs list, however, to try and figure out which jobs are getting repeatedly canceled.

I do think it's still bin issues which may slowly resolve themselves, but I'm not convinced that's 100% of the problem.

Die Essensrationen wurden verdoppelt!
Die Anzahl der Torpedos wurde verdoppelt!
So I'm blind, AND still serving as a marksdwarf. This cannot possibly go wrong! :allears:

I love it how a horse is a kill more notable than an ogress. :allears:

Rurik's facility with a crutch is as legendary as Teims but otherwise Rurik is no better than novice at any skill. He created the artifact sheeps wool mask Ushulazin Nakaseggut, “Realmswatches the Enjoyable Gullies” which along with an infected foot has apparently excused him from any imposed duty to become useful.
Hey, as the single reformed cultist I'm the leader of reformed cultism. :colbert: That job ain't easy you know, and nobody else can do it. Some benefits are to be expected.
