AMC announced today from Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego, CA the premiere of The Walking Dead Season 3 on Sun., Oct. 14 at 9/8c. As previously announced, the series' third season will consist of 16 episodes. Season 3 will also air in two-parts with the first eight hours kicking off Oct. 14 and returning Feb. 2013 with the final eight episodes. Following The Walking Dead will be the season premieres of AMC's unscripted series Talking Dead, hosted by Chris Hardwick (Nerdist), at 11/10c and Comic Book Men at 11:30/10:30c. Season 2 of both series consists of 16 half-hour episodes. Internationally, The Walking Dead will return to audiences in 120+ FOX International Channels (FIC) markets the week of Oct. 15 as part of FIC continued commitment to broadcast the series near date-and-date globally.

Even before the premiere of the Season 2 finale was breaking basic cable television ratings records with 9 million viewers tuning in, the producers of The Walking Dead TV series were already hard at work writing the script for Season 3. Promising to be the most intense and fast-paced chapter of the series yet, the upcoming season will take place within what is agreed upon by fans of the comic to be the most exciting arc of the graphic novel. The filming for the new season began promptly at the start of the second week of May with at least half of the episode scripts for Season 3 having been written for over a month now. Comic-Con 2012 treated us with a first-look trailer at Season 3 that showcased an assortment of scenes from only the first 6 episodes of the 16-episode season. I’ve compiled a list here of pertinent Walking Dead news and info released over the past few months, including the media blowout that came with this year’s Comic-Con. Any future news and info related to The Walking Dead TV series released between now and October can be posted here for discussion as the Season 2 thread will now be locked. A special thanks to Cornballer for suggesting the idea of this thread and allowing me to create it. :)

My favorite "exclusive" from this year's Comic-Con was a beautiful painting by legendary artist Drew Struzan, featuring a horde of zombies from THE WALKING DEAD. Frank Darabont is adapting the apocalyptic Image Comics book created by Robert Kirkman, and man, it looks really, really great.

As I was admiring Struzan's work of art, I wondered what the opening titles to this terrifying new television show might look like... so I animated a spec title sequence using artwork ripped from the pages of the comic, originally illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore.

Just so there's no confusion, I'm not affiliated with the production in any way -- I'm simply a huge fan of both Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman, and this is my attempt at creating a cinematic introduction to one of the all time great "continuing stories of survival horror."

Greg Capullo, the renowned Image Comics artist known for his work on Spawn, has now turned his attention to another kind of undead creature -- as evidenced by his limited-edition The Walking Dead Season 3 poster created for San Diego Comic-Con 2012. The poster depicts one of the show's zombies standing in front of a prison -- a major set-piece of Season 3.

Memorable Quotes

“I’m excited about everything. There are new characters and there’s a new tone. There are characters that people don’t know about that are coming [on], which is really exciting… We’ve done some really cool stuff and I’m really anxious to see what people think of it. I’m really proud of the third season.”
-- Robert Kirkman (Executive Producer)

“In the back half, six of our 13 episodes, people felt we accelerated the pace and told a kind of story that had a better balance of story of horror and character that, perhaps, people were looking for. In season three, we’re using that as a launching point. I guarantee people are going to say it’s too fast, slow it down, it’s too intense.”
-- Glen Mazzara (Executive Producer) referring to the transition from Season 2 to Season 3

“So as much as people love the show, and as high as the ratings are, and as cool as the show is, I feel like we haven't even gotten to the good stuff yet. This season is absolutely going to blow people away.”
-- Robert Kirkman (Executive Producer)

“They've taken a lot of what you see in the comic book series and brought it to life in ways that I didn't think possible. This is going to be one of the most impressive looking things that's ever been put together for a show.”
-- Robert Kirkman (Executive Producer) referring to the Season 3 prison set

“I don't think that will be an issue with Season 3. I guarantee people will say the show is moving too fast and it's too packed. "There's too much going on, I can't take it, it's too exciting!" Trust me, I know people are going to say that because we are really hitting the ground running and we expect the audience to keep up. The audience will not be ahead of The Walking Dead in Season 3. The audience will have to work hard to keep up because we have a very accelerated pace of storytelling.”
-- Glen Mazzara (Executive Producer)

“I’m adamant that if the TV show is just a direct adaptation of the comic, it would be completely boring to a significant percentage of the audience because the comic books do sell really well. So, we want to keep those people guessing as well as the people who have no familiarity with the comics at all… If it were completely up to me, the show would almost be more different. But the things that are very important to the fans, the things that would fundamentally change the characters and fundamentally change the story to the point that it wouldn’t be The Walking Dead, that’s not happening.”
-- Robert Kirkman (Executive Producer)

“It’s beyond our wildest dreams… After doing press with Norman [Reedus] and Sarah [Wayne Callies] and a few of the gang [we went back to the hotel and] sat there watching the sun go down, and we just went, ‘Is this really happening?’ It really does feel like this extraordinary dream sometimes, because I just love playing this guy and I love everybody I work with and we give everything we’ve got, every single day,” … “It’s wild and it just seems to have caught people’s imaginations and it doesn’t always happen that way. I’ve been in things that you think, ‘This is it; this is the greatest script; this is the greatest director; this is the greatest cast,’ and it just doesn’t catch fire the way this has. It’s just a dream job.”
-- Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes)

“Wow… I mean, you know, Andy [Andrew Lincoln] and I read scripts together in my trailer and jump up and down and go, ‘I can't believe they're letting us do this.’ There's so much that happens this season. … We were talking about it tonight, there's scenes in Season 3 that have nothing to do with horror and have nothing to do with hacking something up or gore or too much blood or whatever, but they're just so real that we watch the monitor like this [*hands covering face*]. … And you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it. It sounds ridiculous to say but the acting is so good and the writing is so good this season… it's gonna blow last season away and I loved last season.”
-- Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) on what the most rewarding aspect of Season 3 will be for fans

“It's really good. It's way crazier than any other season, and I know every new season people say that but this time it actually, really is crazy. Like, we'll get the scripts and we're like, ‘What the hell is wrong with these people?’ But then, they [producers/writers] do such amazing, ridiculous things but they put it within the context of a real situation and it hits home pretty hard.”
-- Steven Yeun (Glenn) on how the shooting has been going so far for Season 3

“I mean, we have a lot of really tender moments in Season 3 but it's so… intense. It's so intense. I mean, we [everyone in the cast] can't believe how the writers are sustaining such a level of adrenaline. It's amazing. It's really, really, really, really, really good.”
-- Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene)

“You cannot even begin to predict the stuff that's happening in Season 3. It's just riveting, unpredictable, fantastic horror.”
-- Danai Gurira (Michonne)

Please spoiler tag any and all discussion involving new information about characters, locales, set pieces and graphic novel plot points (Season 3 arc and onward). There are separate threads for discussion of The Walking Dead graphic novel (or here) as well as for major spoilers and unofficial leaks related to the TV Series and the graphic novel.

I also ask that everyone keep production photos and such of new/surprise characters behind a link instead of explicitly posting images. As for other pieces of media, I’ll leave it to your discretion to determine if something is significant enough to hide behind spoiler tags or URLs. Just please be mindful of others who may wish to avoid some particular details about the upcoming season.

Can't wait! Rick is getting better and better as a lead character, but the whole cast still isn't as good as it should be. Not sure if the show will benefit from killing Shane as well.

Anyway, S3 has everything to be the best season yet.

Had to take a double take with that image at the top. Thought it was Joe Manganiello. :lol

Really can't wait for this.

Guess I won't be catching this since whatever satellite company my parents use is parting ways with AMC. I normally go over there to catch up on GOT and this. I guess I'll be missing out.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions of what could be added to the thread just throw it out there. And if you think I didn't give an appropriate warning about spoilers in any of the news/interviews posted then just let me know. I was a little worried about all the information that has been coming out. :p

Nice thread. That 4 min trailer deal got me really excited. I need to play the Telltale games.

Also, I think I'm in love with Maggie.

I loved Season 1. There was a collective total of 4 good episodes in Season 2. With the kind of budget they have ,I can't stand how 95% of the series is the characters (who they have made really unlikable with the writing) just standing around talking. More episodes like the first 4 original season episodes.

Bring it on! I was this close to losing AMC during that contract dispute problem with U-Verse, but thankfully it worked out. Glad I'm not using Direct TV, they are still without AMC. Love this show. Between this and Game of Thrones, I hardly watch anything else when they are on.

Damn, feels like yesterday was Halloween and the first episode was airing.
Anyway, I can't wait. I really really really hope that this airs on AAFES. I have hope since it is one of the biggest shows on TV. If not, I'll be fucked for the whole season since I'll be on a base in Greenland.

Metacafe - Comic-Con 2012 Interview with Showrunner Glen Mazzara Part 1/2
Metacafe - Comic-Con 2012 Interview with Showrunner Glen Mazzara Part 2/2 [Spoilers from the Comic-Con Season 3 Trailer]

Part 1 has Glen talking about the new TWD video game featuring Daryl and Merle and TWD escape obstacle course at Comic-Con. Part 2 is more about Season 3 of the show and what to expect as well as what shooting the new season has been like, and while Mazzara doesn't really spoil anything with what he says, Metacafe was playing the Comic-Con trailer for Season 3 over the majority of the interview.

What's this about?

Glen Mazzara is an executive producer for TWD TV series and took over as the showrunner after Darabont's termination.

Here he's just responding to some naysayer who has apparently already decided that this new season will be shit based solely on the Comic-Con trailer and is calling Mazzara out for wasting the show's potential. I just thought the remarks and responses were hilarious. :p

Indiewire - Glen Mazzara and His Cast Talk Surprises and Sacrifices in the Upcoming Season of The Walking Dead [Michonne & The Governor Spoilers, Major Michonne Spoiler concerning her two pet zombies for those who don't read the comic]

The highlight of this article for me:
On Killing Off Characters

On a show where the threat of zombies is everywhere, equally constant is the possibility that any character could fall victim to an attack from the undead. Mazzara says that although he and the writers want to keep viewers on their toes, they don’t merely knock off characters in order to be sensationalistic.

“It’s something we take very seriously,” he insists. “People become very close to these characters, we care about the characters, and it becomes difficult when you call and actor and say, 'I’m sorry but we’ve got to blow up your character.' But we’ve got to do what’s right for the show, and people do expect the fact that no one’s safe.

“There’s a version of this show that you watch and say, 'Oh, they’re not going to kill that character -- they wouldn’t do that.’ That happens a lot on TV. I don’t think that’s this show. I think we make bold choices and we take it very seriously.”

Good to hear. I was worried that they might start offing characters for the sake of boosting ratings even further or because of some similar form of reasoning.

io9 - Why Michonne is the smartest character on The Walking Dead [Minor Michonne Character Spoilers]

I can't get enough of Danai Gurira talking about her character. You can tell she just gets it. After everything that's been said and shown, I'm strongly convinced that she'll do justice in portraying her graphic novel counterpart.

Some scary news from the The Walking Dead filming set released today.

Three injured when tree falls on Walking Dead set

A tree fell on the outdoor set of TV series “The Walking Dead” in Senoia on Monday – sending three people to the hospital.

The Coweta County Fire Department received a call at 4:59 p.m. about the situation. Deputy Fire Chief Todd Moore said the call was “in regards to traumatic injuries resulting from a tree falling.”

The first units on the scene reported “they had three male subjects inside a van with head trauma and neck and back pain.” When additional fire crews and the Coweta Emergency Medical Service arrived, the patients “were triaged and removed from the van in order of the seriousness of the injuries,” Moore said.

“One of the victims was taken by ground ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center and the other two victims were taken by ground ambulance to Piedmont Newnan Hospital,” Moore said.

The tree fell on the RiverWood Studios property.

“It is my understanding – based on eye witness reports – that a tree that was located in close proximity to a tent fell, striking the victims,” Moore said. The victims were treated on scene by an on-site medical staff member, then put into a white van and transported to the end of a driveway at 3363 Highway 85.

“Our crews responded to that location. Due to the topography and road system, the studio staff didn’t know if our units could reach their location so they transported them to a more accessible area,” Moore said.

“The Walking Dead” is a popular AMC television series with a zombie theme. Significant filming is scheduled in and around Senoia this year.

The series will also be filming in Newnan near Caldwell Tanks Aug. 9-10.

Cast members in the series include Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun and Chandler Riggs.

From what I've found on Twitter, apparently executive producers Glen Mazzara and Gale Anne Hurd are fine.

No word at the moment about any of the cast members or other crew.

According to Lauren Cohan, the three people who were injured only suffered concussions.

Could've been a lot worse. I also think now that we would've been hearing a lot more commotion if one of the members of the cast were involved.
