An appeal has been launched over a Red Deer County approval of a 70-metre communications tower at Benalto.

The county's municipal planning commission approved the tower, which planners said would be 116 metres (280 feet) from the nearest residence, at its Feb. 20 meeting.

Not all local residents were in favour of the development. Two letters of concern were submitted to the planning commission ahead of its decision.

Opponents cited "significant health risks" from exposure to radio frequency radiation emitted by the tower.

They also said the tower could lower their property values and the deep pilings required could damage underground water supplies.

Both letters asked that the tower be located at another location further from residences.

Among the 13 conditions attached to the approval was one that "the approved use shall not create a nuisance nor adversely affect the amenities of the district."

The applicant must also provide a geotechnical report and a ground water assessment to the satisfaction of Red Deer County to ensure no neighbouring water wells are affected.

The subdivision and development appeal board is set for May 23 at 9 a.m. at Red Deer County Centre.

The tower would be operated by Valo Networks Ltd., which has partnered with Red Deer County to deliver high-speed internet to county residents.
