Commodity Food Program for Seniors

Commodity Supplemental Food Program Distributes food to seniors

D.C. seniors, you may qualify to receive 30 lbs of free, healthy groceries each month! During the summer, vouchers redeemable at participating farmers markets are also available. 

To qualify you must be a D.C. resident who is income eligible and age 60 and older.  Two official documents showing current income, address and age are required for registration.

Sites are located throughout the city. To learn more about the program or to enroll, call (202) 644-9880. 


Volunteer of the Year Award

ED John Thompson awards volunteer of the year Celeste Ellerbee

DCOA Executive Director John M. Thompson presented the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Recognition Program held at the Navy Yard.  Celeste Ellerbee was nominated by the principal of the school for her work as a classroom aide at the Langdon Educational Center.  She has been an essential part of the classroom there for the last 13 years.  She is known to adapt to the learning styles, behaviors and abilities of each of her students to ensure they are successful no matter how difficult the assignment.

DCOA applauds Ms. Ellerbee for her dedication and commitment to early childhood learning in the District of Columbia.


DCOA Success Story Featured in Blog

A recent blog for the Diverse Elders Coalition features "Miss Fanny" who with the support of the D.C. Office on Aging services began living a healthier lifestyle.  Dr. Imani Woody is the author of the blog entitled "Education + Action = Prevention Power." Centenarian Salute featured on YouTube

The District of Columbia Network (DCN-16) on cable television has added their coverage of The 28th Annual Salute to District of Columbia Centenarians to their YouTube Channel.  There were 25 District residents age 100 and older who attended the event with their family members, caregivers and friends.

DCOA Budget Performance Hearing

The DCOA Budget Oversight hearing, to take place before the Committee on Health, has been rescheduled to Thursday, May 8 at 10 a.m. in Room 123 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.

DCOA Provides Outreach to Residential Facilities

HSEMA awards weather radios to seniors at residential building

DCOA presented an outreach event for seniors at the Georgetown Retirement Residences.  The event included health screenings, information and resources and more from government and community partners including DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Office of the People's Counsel, Board of Elections and Ethics.  Seabury Resources for Aging provided information on the new transportation program for seniors and their program for the visually impaired.  PEPCO was also on hand to provide energy saving tips and information.  Click to edit this placeholder text.


Aging Network Volunteer Collaborative

The Got an Hour? Campaign is brought to you by the Aging Network Volunteer Collaborative. The Aging Network’s Volunteer Collaborative is a national resource center that helps leaders in the aging and disability networks engage talented older adult volunteers to meet growing needs for services.The Volunteer Collaborative offers online resources, comprehensive training, and opportunities for leaders to learn best practices from each other.

This support enables organizations to 1) build their capacity through skilled volunteers, who provide solutions that keep older adults and people with disabilities healthy and independent and 2) expand opportunities to serve to a broad, diverse range of potential volunteers, including people who receive aging or disability services.
