I have just started reading this today, so working my way through it all... and I think this is my first post even.

Anyway! I just want to say, everytime I read one of these DF LP's, it always reminds me of what made me start playing it in the first place. Those tales of Boatmurdered got me into it. Everytime I read another, it's just amazing how much storytelling goes into it all.

I always wanted to try this kind of thing myself one day, but I feel I'd lack the right narrative. And my habit of only playing a modded game and not as dwarves would kinda ruin it... /ramble

I just felt like saying this. Dwarf Fortress Let's Plays are great.

Why are we getting so many non-historical dwarfs now? Have we already killed everyone from the Rare Ships?

Honestly, I don't know. Our civilization has thousands of dwarves in it, but of course, most of those aren't "historical" (they exist as population counts at the mountainhomes). I know for a fact there are still historical dwarves who haven't come, though. I do fathom the mysteries of Toady's immigrant programming.

27th Granite, 251
The new clothing stockpile is filling rapidly.

The queen sleeps in her bedroom. I installed the copper door and constructed walls to form a closet. She does not seem displeased but Sankis is not easy to know.

7th Slate
We have a lot of clothing. Bins are being fetched.

10th Slate
Dippy Wooderson was found dead in his hospital bed. He succumbed to his wounds which were infected and to blood loss. He survived nearly three months since being mangled by a fiendish murk zombie kangaroo doe without completed treatment.

I will memorialize him in the hall of heroes.

Outside, a murk is spotted far to the northeast. We watch as it boils and creeps. Nothing stirs in its path.

11th Slate
Tectonis is a mother.

She gave birth in her hospital bed, where she lies with her right leg still broken, attended by Wili who is diagnosing her infected wounds.

Her daughter is named GruntyThrst which I suspect is a reference to the experience of lingering in a hospital bed without treatment for months and then giving birth.

Cyan Dag the infant's father is ecstatic.

Late in the day the lookouts reported the murk has dissolved leaving no zombies to trouble us.

13th Slate
The animal trainers have begun to understand the motivations of the coyote. I suspect they are similar to the motivations of a dog but I am not an animal trainer.

My preparations in the theater are nearly complete. Soon I will see justice done.

There is another murk seeping up from the tainted earth north of Fadedmaggot. This one is larger and faster, spreading across the dropseed grass and intertwining with the Glumpwrongs.

14th Slate
It recedes. Again no creature within stirs, alive or dead or fiendish murk zombie.

17th Slate
The queen must have one more ballista arrow. What can it mean?

18th Slate
GorfZaplen has died of thirst. He went insane on the 1st of Granite and thereafter it is reported refused to drink. The recruit had the discourtesy of expiring in the bedroom of Gnu Sheriff in Town and her husband Chickenfrogdwarf and was discovered there by ObMeiste. I was sleeping in my bedroom opposite Gnu Sheriff's at the time and was irritated to be awoken but glad the babbling has finally ceased therefore I returned to slumber.

When I awoke again the rumor in the halls is that Kithrixx has been taken by a mood! She refuses to discuss it preferring to make preparations in secret.

19th Slate
Kithrixx claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop on the main storage floor and immediately set out to gather materials.

22nd Slate
No sock shall be sold to merchants, be it an artifact or a tattered troll fur rag taken from a goblin's severed foot. So decrees the mayor Kalman who after all has a useless job with no other responsibility.

24th Slate
Toussaint Louverture has died of thirst due to being insane. She was a high master glassmaker and a great conversationalist but she was miserable and died unloved in a stockpile. The stockpile has many unused copper wheelbarrows which is useful. She is a sorrowful casualty of the rigors of life at Bronzestabbed.

25th Slate
The manager Tiny Turtle has given birth!

She still carries the infant Memy and now also hauls the infant she named AggressivelyStupid. Perhaps the stresses of being manager and also parent have led her to be overly harsh judge of a newborn's smartness.

Kithrixx has hauled two large malachite stones to the workshop and now fetches rough milk quartzes.

I am told Schir's broken ribs were sutured using adamantine thread. By Federico de Soya, the broker. I do not know doctoring but I suspect Schir will never suffer broken ribs again. When Schir dies (hopefully not for many many years) he will leave a more valuable corpse than that of any king.

27th Slate
The queen's demand is fulfilled. Does she wander to the ballista arrow stockpiles to admire them when no dwarf is around to witness? I do not know.

Kithrixx still gathers materials without hinting at the nature of her secret project.

Normally it's the former, but DFHack has advanced in leaps and strides in the past year or two. There is a siege engine UI plugin that lets them target stuff the same way archers do among other quality-of-life improvements.

One time I had a aboveground keep with ballista parapets opening out of the walls, covering most of the map. My bombardier recruits practiced by shooting wooden logs at passing peregrines. It owned.

Our queen constantly mandating the construction of thick phallic ballista arrows? I think I know what she uses those for, what a naughty secret! :shlick: :ssh:

Hey, what are our most harmless animals? I have an idea that suit the purpose of keeping dwarfs on their toes and ready for any danger.

Since we are already building a wall around the murk I suggest we build a platform out into murk land. Then the area below the platform is walled in with a double layer, one layer which is fortification that will allow the murk to pass through, and another a series of level controlled bridges that can vacuum seal the area.

A hole is left in the platform so animals and the like can be thrown in there to be murked. The fortification is so they can't run elsewhere, the bridges so the area can sealed and things be retrieved if need be. Furthermore, a tunnel (or similar) is filled with cage traps and blocked by a bridge that give access to the rest of the map (and perhaps a animal on a leash to work as a bait) and connect to the murking area.

Then a some short of colliseum if built. It should contain multiple failsafes, such as being completely sealed to the rest of the fortress by using airlocks, glass walls and roofs (so the spectacle can be seen) and cage traps to prevent anything escaping.

Then we can murk whatever we please, boot them into the arena and let the squads fight them for training and entertainment for the other dwarves. I think kittens and chicks should be harmless enough to not maim and kill armored dwarfs, yet tough enough to provide a challenge.

You can create a big crew of nurses and doctors and unassign them from every other labor. Then they'll only sleep, eat, drink, and go on break before they bother to do surgery.

The other problem is the severely injured spawn literally dozens of medical jobs, each of which is doled out individually and sometimes sequentially (e.g., not simultaneously). So when a dwarf has six wounds each of which need to be diagnosed, and then set, and then sutured, and then given a bandage, and the doctors are all taking lunch breaks in between, it can really drag things out unreasonably.

The other problem is infection. I don't have much insight into how severe infections are, but most dwarfs get infected long before anyone has a chance to clean their wounds with soap.

And of course, when there's no injured, if you have like 20 dwarfs with no other job assignments, it's a huge waste of labor. So I don't tend to do that, and I think most of the other overseers avoided it too.

1st Felsite, 251
Kithrixx has begun her labors.

4h Felsite
I created a new stockpile for the storing of spare wheelbarrows and minecarts. I am also digging a new hallway to improve efficiency of dwarves hauling to and from the new stockpiles.

There are 882 empty barrels in storage. I canceled a long standing order to make barrels forever.

7th Felsite
A supposedly tame kangaroo buck is missing. There has not been a murk but dwarves are nervous nonetheless.

The tunnel is already cut through. Bronzestabbed's miners are supreme.

I checked with Tiny Turtle to find over 25 dwarves are idle which has not happened in years. It is encouragement that labor is available for projects. First I will give idle dwarves time to fetch fresh clothing and enjoy leisure and gather in a hall to witness justice.

8th Felsite
Kithrixx has broken her solitude to display the artifact of her labors, a malachite amulet! Babin Isir, “The Friends of Fraying” is encrusted with gems and fungus wood and wool and leather. The obverse of the amulet commemorates the founding of Bronzestabbed. The dwarves shown are recognizably myself and my companions of The Noble Work. The reverse depicts Usenberim, the artifact adamantine crossbow.

Kithrixx will be remembered forever in the legends of The Rare Ship as a stonecrafter of unsurpassed skill (although some claim Clamps McGraw the child, who created the artifact diorite mug Matrubal is her equal). Henceforth she is assigned to the crafting of stone items in fulfillment of her destiny.

10th Felsite
Oh Queen Sankis for whom I do my solemn duty
Two ballista arrows for you I will order
Although we have one hundred thirty-two
Already.

13th Felsite
A child was briefly insane and dwarves nearby saw the ghost of Slick Slinky slip into UberJew's body and back out again quickly. That is unacceptable behavior. I have been tolerant of the spectres of good Bronzestabbed dwarves out of deference to Pickled Tink but my tolerance has been overextended.

The child is stoic and apparently unharmed.

I sought Pickled Tink and found him in the last place I looked which was alone in my office waiting for me when I gave up the search and went there to do bookkeeping. He was solemn.

“Child,” I said to him, “Out of deference to yourself who was a good overseer and are a good friend I have been lenient regarding the other ghosts,” I began.

“Leperfish,” he told me, “I know. But some of them are very unhappy and some are hard to talk to.”

“Why is that,” I asked, meaning why are they unhappy but Pickled Tink understood a different question.

“Because I am a child!” he said. “If I were alive I'd be older but they see me as a child and most of them don't know that years have gone past.”

I allowed him to continue. It is best to let Pickled Tink say what he needs to say.

“Some of them are like... are like they are in the same day they died, forever. They remember what they were doing or why they got killed and you say something and they understand you but a minute later they forgot you said anything or what they said. Over and over and over.”

I nodded but I did not in truth understand fully.

“And some of them are just mean. Like the one down in the lower hall that just knocks that silver chair over again and again. He's just angry. He doesn't hear me when I try to talk to him at all. I don't even know his name.”

“Fitzy Fitz” I told him.

Pickled Tink nodded, “OK yes him. And... and LeJackal... well to be honest I'm afraid of LeJackal. He was bad when he was alive. He... he punished me...”

It looked as though Pickled Tink might weep so I interrupted. “I know, Pickled, it's OK. Don't worry about LeJackal. I was just looking for you actually, because I intend to carve some memorials.”

Pickled Tink regarded me forlornly. He was more transparent then and I could see the smooth stone wall behind him through his pale face.

“Not you, though! Not... not unless you desire it, child.”
He shook his head.

“Then not you. Besides, I need your help. You were a great Overseer and Bronzestabbed has to be safe, and you are the best dwarf at finding where the problems are.”

I think he was relieved because he was more solid and he nodded but Pickled Tink is always solemn so it is not easy to tell.

I will engrave memorial slabs for the ghosts bemis, Hostile Rabbi, Slick Slinky, Strom Cuzewon, Kaishai, Fitzy Fitz, RedRansacker, Joecool, and LeJackal. Many other dwarves are not memorialized but have not risen as ghosts but it is our duty to recognize all who fell at Bronzestabbed. When the disruptive ghosts are put to rest, I will see to them as well.

I did not lie to Pickled Tink. There are rumors about what has been done in Bronzestabbed's depths and the child's ability to float through walls and not be harmed by what lies beyond them is invaluable. Yet I must remember that, ex-Overseer and ex-dwarf he may be, but he is also just a child. The burden of duty has been heavy upon his shoulders especially given his shoulders are not really there at all.

14th Felsite
The child Memy is old enough to walk, an infant no longer. Tiny Turtle needs only haul one baby.

16th Felsite
One hundred thirty-four.

Elves have come. We will foist threadbare shirts upon them (but may not export our filthy used socks). Federico is dressing wounds in the hospital but I will cancel all other labors to ensure he cannot shirk again my instruction to trade at severe loss.

I spent all day with the manager Tiny Turtle. By specifying only hauling of finished goods bins and severely worn clothing we generated nearly four hundred hauling jobs. I have suspended most other work orders.

17th Felsite
Shukaro has birthed an infant girl! The child is named Praisebetome Zefonmorul “Fountainpages.” I did not know Shukaro or her husband LLSix were reverent of writing and books.

Another stray kangaroo is missing. Suspicious.

18th Felsite
Pagoon walks, a babe no more. How quickly they grow.

I have located the missing kangaroos by inspecting one of the three animal stockpiles. They are dead in their cages. I suspect it is because they are not fed. I also found a dead two-humped camel, several dead weasels, a dead cavy boar, a... Gusmul Ngureulspa Odnaoxo's corpse (I think it is a goblin), several live trained coyotes, a couple of live aye-ayes (they have disturbing faces), two live trained skunks, and two goblins that are very much alive. These goblins have been overlooked and must be added to the others below. I checked the other piles and found only one more dead animal (another weasel), but there is a trained eagle and another goblin and more trained echidnas and a tame pangolin.

There is a secured dirt room with fodder for dangerous livestock. I would order hauling of the animals immediately but every dwarf is occupied with the rush to haul trade goods therefore it must be delayed.

19th Felsite
SilentDwarf has chosen an inopportune moment to bellow and cry.

He is at the trade depot where a dozen dwarfs haul and arrange bins including Queen Sankis herself. I suppose he must be excused due to being haunted recently and he is respected due to being a legend of both weaving and clothesmaking.

As others carry on their duties he wandered off down the stairs shouting and cursing and eventually calmed down.

It was just in time to not be witnessed by the first elf arriving leading her packhorse.

Federico was at the depot to meet her. It is obvious now in retrospect. He did not desire to be known to dwarves of The Rare Ship as a fool giving away excess value for little but he has no concern as to his reputation among elves. Nor should any dwarf! Therefore I am hopeful he will do as instructed and heap ruined clothes upon the backs of the elven steeds.

21st Felsite
As the elves begin to unpack their goods there are still 340 jobs pending to haul items to the trade depot.

Dwarves using the courtyard should be more cautious of the beehives.

22nd Felsite
The moment the elves finished arranging their goods, Federico made initial bargaining even as dozens more bins and piles arrive every hour. We traded heaps of worn and threadbare and tattered clothing and many items stripped from larger creatures such as deceased humans and elves no dwarf would desire.

In all, the mounds of rags and sweaty cloaks were valued at ☼76,915 and weighed ┌2937.

In exchange we have a few barrels of booze, some bags of flour and dye, chests, buckets, crutches, splints, berries, and, of actual use, a score or more bins of new plant fiber cloth. Despite taking almost everything of use the elves have already made profit of ☼55,331.

There are still 270 bins and items to be hauled to the depot. I instructed Federico de Soya wait there as long as possible and then trade additional refuse, perhaps for wood shields or barrels of gnomeblight.

25th Felsite
Federico de Soya traded ☼6756-worth of oversized clothing and rags for three empty barrels, a bucket, a bag of berry seeds, and a pine crutch.

26th Felsite
Snollygoster is afoot, a baby no more.

We haul. Every free dwarf barges through fortress corridors seeking discarded mittens and mouldering shoes. The rumor has spread throughout and I think everyone understands the joke but we are too busy to stop and chuckle. It is days of frantic toil to locate frayed trousers and threadbare gloves.

27th Felsite
We have exchanged ☼2170 worth of discards for a wooden elfmade cage containing a tame wild boar sow. How can a wild boar be tame? Only an elf knows.

28th Felsite
Federico de Soya could endure creeping sobriety no longer and has left the depot to find a drink. The hauling continues. Someone will be impressed into duty if need be. I am determined we will rid Bronzestabbed of its burden of laundry!

Except for our used socks of course because the Mayor decreed no socks may be sold. The mayor has an excess of mercy for elven merchants.

I really enjoy your updates, Leperflesh. Seeing order brought to the fortress is very calming to the OCD part of me and makes me want to play the game again in a way that years of chaos and battles and death never quite did.

Regarding the unhappiness from long patrol duty - can't that be countered by a 1 month on / 2 months off schedule for each squad? I know 1 month on / 1 month off doesn't help but surely it's possible to give them a long enough break to reach a happiness equilibrium?

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

Yeah, to be honest I'm not really sure. Right now they're 2 months on/1 month off. But if you watch the announcement logs, it seems like they go on and off duty at random times during the month, and in batches. There's something severely wrong with the code in this respect.

Normally I don't have a problem with 2on/1off but I think it's combining with the fact that everyone's clothes are rotting off and the bad thoughts from old clothes are really, really bad apparently. I also think having huge amounts of worn clothes in the fortress is bad, because I get the impression when a dwarf's own clothes rot away they pick something new to take at random from everything available, without regard to its condition. I'm not at all sure of that, but practically every dwarf has bad thoughts about their clothes even though I know several overseers before me were cranking out new clothing, and I've been doing it too.

One issue that is really stupid is thongs. A lot of dwarves arrive at bronzestabbed wearing thongs, but you can't make them at any dwarven workshop, so they never get replaced. That means any dwarf who lives at Bronzestabbed long enough to wear out their thong will definitely get the worst thought about it (was upset to have an item of clothing rot away). Dwarves don't actually need to wear anything more than a robe, too, so it's unnecessary.

Maybe I should Forbid all thongs.

And, of course, shoes are also useful to prevent dwarves from being poisoned by walking through puddles of forgotten beast toxin, as Gemclod's Nolio epidemic showed us.

WELL THAT JUST HAPPENED!

White-Devil posted:

I like to imagine a dwarven queen dressing up as Solid Snake, sneaks through the entire fort just to get to where the new ballista arrow is stored, cuddle with it and sneak back.

You know, as much as we make fun of Her Royal Dwarfness' obsession of ballista bolts, at least its a quota the fort can fulfill. Memories of Syrupleaf's nobles waging class warfare on the other inhabitants because their need for glass that cannot be made goes unfulfilled is one of the highlights of that particular fort.

There is an extremely bad thought from being naked. There was a bug in earlier releases of DF2012 that caused every infant becoming a child to have that extremely bad thought, because infants are naked but children want to be clothed. It also happened whenever you recruited someone and told them to wear armor but not clothing; they'd strip immediately, and then get the extremely bad thought before they had a chance to go find some armor to put on.

Toady fixed those bugs, but if a dwarf's clothes rot away they get the double-whammy of the bad thought from that, plus the extremely bad thought from nudity.

The beast from Crete that can't be beat!
Huh, I guess it must have changed from 40d (either that or my friend got it wrong).

Hadn't considered the beast extract thing. That stuff is an absolute pain in the rear end.

So last night I watched the new Agents of Shield show and then settled down for a nice long session of Bronzestabbed. Around 11:45pm the entire neighborhood lost power. It is not a nice feeling to be sitting there taking screenshots and playing the game and suddenly have the whole world plunge into blackness and know instantly that you've just lost the update.

Well, actually, no, I still have the update, just not the progress in the game! The good thing is, we just had a season turn over and I do seasonal saves, so I only have to start over from 1st Hematite (the end of the last update).

So... here's some Things that Didn't Happen After All, for your amusement!

Sometimes playing this game just takes a really loving long time. Anyway I finished drafting an update, but I have 140 images to go through (there will be a lot of duplicates and unusables this time) so I think an update tomorrow is most likely. The last one was the 19th which is nine days ago and that's really sad.

The silver lining is that I took steps during this last play session or two that should help to speed things up in the future. We'll see.
