Maryland had the highest percentage of nonprofit hospitals in the country in 2010, with 95.7 percent of its hospitals being nonprofit organizations and 4.3 percent being for-profit organizations, according to State Health Facts, a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
In 2010, there were a total of 2,904 nonprofit hospitals in the United States.
The top ten states with the highest percentages of nonprofit hospitals, in 2010, were:
1. Maryland — 95.7 percent
2. North Dakota — 95.1 percent
3. Wisconsin — 94.4 percent
4. Connecticut — 94.1 percent
5. Maine — 91.9 percent
6. New York — 86.5 percent
7. New Hampshire — 85.7 percent
8. Delaware — 85.7 percent
9. South Dakota — 84.9 percent
10. New Jersey — 84.9 percent
