Episode 103 | Sharing Your Differences | Steven Hardy-Braz

Episode 103 | I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Hardy-Braz about his work as an advocate and activist. Steven is a psychologist who lives in North Carolina but was in Austin to visit friends at the School for the Deaf and to view the eclipse. We spent most of three days together renewing our friendship and exploring our unique neighborhood. Steven advocates for people with a hearing impairment, for bicyclists and for people with mobility impairments. He was struck by an automobile while riding his bike and suffers significant pain from the damage he sustained in the crash. He uses a wheel chair much of the time and fights to make our world a better place for others in his situation. He also is a ASL interpreter and introduced us to his friend Nick who we will be interviewing in the future.

89 | Bicycling Historic Route 66 | Tracy and Peter Flucke

Episode 89 | Tracy and Peter have been doing the good work in bicycle and pedestrian safety for a long time. It is good that they can take the time to ride the long trips. This is their third really long trip. The first on was from West to East across the country and that one is the subject of Episode 55 of Celebrating Differences.
2026 is the 100 anniversary of the opening of Route 66 from Chicago to the West Coast  so it is appropriate that Tracy and Peter rode and wrote about it.

We met Howie through his wife Linda Anderson who showed up at our Tai Chi group and then both of them showed up at a campout event near Castroville, TX that was hosted by a mutual friend. They are the kind of interesting, out of the box, folks we generally are drawn to. Howie came to the “Studio” in our house for this interview. We have gone to a subscription model for help in funding our work. 21 – Anti Ageism by two thirty somethings:
Kyrie Carpenter and Ryan Baker

Episode 21: Kyrié Carpenter and Ryan Baker talking about Anti-Ageism and growing older.First, we are glad to be back from the long break we took during the pandemic. What with selling and buying a house, moving our furniture in to storage, traveling around to AirBNBs and then moving all that stuff in storage back into a new house and then to both have to go in for surgery… it has been an eventful time. But today, we are back and excited about our two guests. Our primary focus is on Growing Old(er)! and we are all doing that, but our guests today helped create a website/clearinghouse for resources to combat Ageism. That site is OldSchool.info and they worked with Ashley Applewhite to make it happen. People are always surprised to hear that Ani and I are approaching 80. That is because they have an idea of what 80 looks like and have a skewed vision of what 80 year olds should act like. Kyrié (Kee-re-ay) Carpenter (6/6/86) has an interesting website called Kyrieosity.com.  She does keynotes and workshops to “plant the seeds of personal and cultural growth” and also is managing editor of the blog posts on ChangingAging with Dr. Bill Thomas. I took the effort to read her masters thesis to see what she had to say about the Anti-Aging myth in America. She has an interesting take and I will ask her about that.Ryan Backer (6/8/88) is a self-proclained Age Activist – They identify as a white, non-binary, European-American ‘old person in training’ with a BS degree in Gerontological Studies. He also aims high, aiming to eradicate all forms of oppression.  On his website AgeActivism.com he talks about his workshops called AGE QUEER. Sit back and relax and lets see what our guests have to say about Anti-Ageism and Growing Old(er)!. We have gone to a subscription model for help in funding our work. 20 – 86 years young:
Chris Crowley

Episode 20: Chris Crowley, Author of Younger Next Year talks about aging well. The conversation in this episode is far ranging but keeps coming back to being active physically and mentally to maintain your edge into your 80’s and beyond. Chris Crowley, 86 year old Author of Younger Next Year: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy – Until You’re 80 and Beyond has sold over 2 million copies and been translated into 23 languages. This book was his first about what you can do to help you age better and enjoy aging more. Chris also recommends his book Younger Next Year The Exercise Program and Fit Forever videos. The newest edition of the YNY book has new material about keeping mentally active as well. Chris quoted his co-author, Henry Lodge as saying “how long you live is 80% genetics and how well you live is 20% genetics.”
Chris and I met at a bicycle camp in Connecticut 15 years ago just after his book was first published. Now he has released a new edition with new material about mental aging and staving off Alzheimer’s disease. The 20th episode Growing Old(er)! seemed a great time to ask him to talk about what he has learned about aging well.
We are approaching 1,000 plays of the 20 episodes and that is a major milestone for us. We have gone to a subscription model for help in funding our work.
