Celebrating Differences
Topics:
On We Are All ONE! — Celebrating Differences, we will talk with people about the things that are important to them. We also will talk to people about “Growing” as they age. How are they growing mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Our shows are about 40 minutes long and our schedule is to have one episode out every week.
Of course we want to make it easy to find us, so here are a few links in alphabetical order:
Apple: Overcast: PocketCasts: RadioPublic: Spotify:
If you think you would like to spend some time talking with us about Celebrating Differences, read these pages and then text CD! to 512-338-4075 and we can talk. If you would like to be a sustaining member of Celebrating Differences then please follow this link and donate. All donations are tax deductible.
We are all different and unique and we need to celebrate what we bring to the whole.
Interested?
Send us an email and tell us what you want to talk about. You are unique, different and special and we want to talk with you.
Future Episodes:
We are nearing the kick-off of our live to Facebook and YouTube podcasts. At the same time we have changed the name from Growing Old(er)! to Celebrating Differences. As we kept talking to people we realized that, while we are all growing older, the differences in the people with whom we talk are extraordinary and need to be celebrated. We’ll keep this site updated as we go.
Special Series:
In addition to our regular weekly interviews with interesting people we are doing three special series, Self Love, Good Grief!, and On Politics! All of the special series are on this page:
Self Love is a discussion between Ani Colt, author of the book Self Love as Spiritual Practice, Nine Keys to Loving Yourself, and Truda Stransky, a Jungian Psychoanalyst.
Good Grief! explores the different ways loss impacts our lives and how people have found to cope with the grief. Loss is inevitable, how we cope with loss is complex and important.
On Politics! is a look at the 2022 election cycle through the eyes of the candidates. We interviewed the local, state and national politicians who will have a voice in the future of our neighborhood.
Episodes:
Episode 103 | Sharing Your Differences | Steven Hardy-Braz
Episode 103 | I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Hardy-Braz about his work as an advocate and activist. Steven is a psychologist who lives in North Carolina but was in Austin to visit friends at the School for the Deaf and to view the eclipse. We spent most of three days together renewing our friendship and exploring our unique neighborhood. Steven advocates for people with a hearing impairment, for bicyclists and for people with mobility impairments. He was struck by an automobile while riding his bike and suffers significant pain from the damage he sustained in the crash. He uses a wheel chair much of the time and fights to make our world a better place for others in his situation. He also is a ASL interpreter and introduced us to his friend Nick who we will be interviewing in the future.

Episode 096 | I believe in the word “and”. | April Obersteller
Episode 096 | In this Episode, number 96, we had a chance to talk with the new Managing Director of woom USA, the US arm of what I believe is the best children’s bike manufacturer in the world.
Full disclosure here, I am a part-time employee of woom, working with families to provide a powerful experience for children as they start a wonderful journey by bicycle. I was introduced to woom when a friend asked if I wanted to help at an outdoor event where we would be letting children ride bikes. I fell in love with the brand after seeing how it made the learning and riding experience so much better.
So, yes, I’m biased but hopefully that didn’t keep us from having a good interview.

Episode 094 | I’m worried about bicycling! | Richard Wharton
Episode 094 | I haven’t seen Richard in 10 or 15 years so it was good to catch up. I was somewhat troubled by his evident loss of faith in his world of bicyclist education and training. But we talked about hope at the end and he cited a number of things that make him hopeful…mostly people that he named.

89 | Bicycling Historic Route 66 | Tracy and Peter Flucke
Episode 89 | Tracy and Peter have been doing the good work in bicycle and pedestrian safety for a long time. It is good that they can take the time to ride the long trips. This is their third really long trip. The first on was from West to East across the country and that one is the subject of Episode 55 of Celebrating Differences.
2026 is the 100 anniversary of the opening of Route 66 from Chicago to the West Coast so it is appropriate that Tracy and Peter rode and wrote about it.

But today, we are back and excited about our two guests. Our primary focus is on Growing Old(er)! and we are all doing that, but our guests today helped create a website/clearinghouse for resources to combat Ageism. That site is OldSchool.info and they worked with Ashley Applewhite to make it happen. People are always surprised to hear that Ani and I are approaching 80. That is because they have an idea of what 80 looks like and have a skewed vision of what 80 year olds should act like. The newest edition of the YNY book has new material about keeping mentally active as well. Chris quoted his co-author, Henry Lodge as saying “how long you live is 80% genetics and how well you live is 20% genetics.”
Chris and I met at a bicycle camp in Connecticut 15 years ago just after his book was first published. Now he has released a new edition with new material about mental aging and staving off Alzheimer’s disease. The 20th episode Growing Old(er)! seemed a great time to ask him to talk about what he has learned about aging well.
