Why this petition matters

Started by Mercy For Animals

I worked at a Lilydale turkey slaughterhouse in Canada and was sickened by the horrific animal abuse and suffering I witnessed there.

I saw workers yank turkeys out of transport crates and violently shackle them upside down on the slaughter line. The frightened birds were then dragged through an electrified vat of water, painfully shocked but still conscious and able to feel pain when their throats were cut open. Many were still alive when they were submerged in hot water tanks and scalded to death.

Using hidden cameras, I recorded it all. I also reported these heartbreaking abuses to management, but saw no corrective actions taken. In fact, everything I witnessed is considered standard practice at turkey slaughterhouses across the country. The workers I spoke with agreed that these animals are essentially tortured to death. Their suffering is almost unimaginable.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Please join me in calling on Lilydale’s parent company, Sofina Foods, to end the worst forms of animal abuse at its facilities, including swiftly ending live-shackle slaughter in favor of less cruel systems that eliminate the horrific suffering caused by shackling, shocking, cutting open, and scalding conscious animals.

Because of caring people like you who sign petitions like this and use their voices to speak up for the voiceless, we have already seen some of the biggest food companies in North America make important animal welfare changes that significantly reduce the suffering of millions of animals.

For example, after hearing from thousands of people through Change.org, Maple Leaf Foods, the largest meat producer in Canada, committed to ending the torture of birds at its slaughterhouses by switching to less cruel slaughter systems. It’s time for Sofina Foods to do the same.

Please, take a moment to sign my petition calling on Sofina Foods to stop torturing turkeys and adopt meaningful animal welfare standards.

Thank you.
