Human Rights in Public Health Practice

Jevaia Oral Health Care

Jevaia Foundation uses a rights-based approach to establish oral health care in rural Nepal. In collaboration with community stakeholders, our programs serve an area of 50,000 people.

Many dental professionals know there is a widespread need for better dental care worldwide, and they want to help. The prevailing model of dental community service focused on short-term outreach is often costly, physically difficult, and time consuming. Often this is simply not a realistic way to engage in social impact work. And for those who do get the chance to engage in international service, the scale of need can be overwhelming, laying bare the imperative for sustained work on the ground. That work is not only the work of dentistry, but of human rights.

Jevaia has spent over 15 years building relationships and collaborating with community stakeholders in Nepal, and we want to give dentists abroad the chance to make an impact in a way that is feasible, sustainable and meaningful. Through the immediacy of social media, opportunities for remote learning, and ongoing professional dialogue, there are many substantive ways for dental professionals to be connected to our work from home, and in a spirit of mutual learning.

This free talk will provide an introduction to Jevaia Oral Health’s model of care, developed over 17 years of painstaking successes and failures. It will outline the guiding philosophies and principles that structure our approach, which touch practice in public health, social work, and human rights.

Dec. 8 or 13 at 7pm by Zoom

The presentation will also introduce Jevaia's new Partner Practice initiative, which invites dental practices to spend limited charitable resources on high impact local programs, while joining in a professional dialogue about best practice in a complicated, unequal, and unpredictable world.

We look forward to seeing you!
