Many dental professionals know there is a widespread need for better dental care worldwide, and they want to help. The prevailing model of dental community service focused on short-term outreach is often costly, physically difficult, and time consuming. Often this is simply not a realistic way to engage in social impact work. And for those who do get the chance to engage in international service, the scale of need can be overwhelming, laying bare the imperative for sustained work on the ground. That work is not only the work of dentistry, but of human rights.
