Weird engine noise at idle

Recommended Posts

I noticed this noise coming from the engine when the car is idling. As soon as you press the gas pedal the noise disappears and then reappears. It only happens after the engine has warmed up a bit, not immediately after the cold start.

Listen to it here: https://vid.me/a8zd

Any ideas?

I don't think it's something you should try and fix yourself.

I would be down to the main dealer to get it sorted at their expense, under warranty.

I'd suggest you persuade the dealer to have a look at the January 2016 technical webinar, particularly the bit about noisey Sandem air con compressors *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*

Can you elaborate, please?

I'll be hitting 30k km in a couple of months so I plan to let them look into it then.

Gulp, oh no, something new to worry about - seriously though, thanks for the warning!

If they do their job right you'll end up with a new air conditioning pump and dryer.

But in my video both AC & the vents are turned off - so this thing is actually noisy regardless?

  • 1 month later...

The variable displacement a/c pump turns regardless.

Well, I'm pretty ****ed off right now.

So I went to a local Skoda car dealer the other day to do the car maintenance service (30,000 km) and mentioned this noise from my video above to the dealer. One of the representatives went for a short ride with me so I clearly showed it to them, but they said it was nothing out of ordinary for a Fabia, just the sound of air coming through the vents, but that they still would run some tests. I also mentioned to them another sound you can often hear from the front part of the car, which literally sounds like "crickets chirping" (listen to it here: https://vid.me/kFWz). As expected, the tests didn't show anything... everything seems perfectly fine with my car and the mechanics "couldn't hear any special noise" (duh, what did you expect), and again they said everything is within the range of "normal", and that after certain mileage the car can never be as silent as "new" again and blahblah. I told them to check the Skoda webinars, which they did, but the AC compressor problem allegedly doesn't pertain to my engine..according to them. Whatever. Also, they said that since the tests didn't show any deviations that's all they could do - unless I wanted them to take certain things apart to dig to the root of this, but that would cost extra (mechanic hourly rate etc).

The car is less than 2 yrs old, so shouldn't the warranty cover all this until they fix it? I mean, it might be OK for them, but these noises freaking irritate me and I'm not happy it.

Listen to it again, two kinds of noises. How can this be normal??

Should I go to another dealer and instruct them to just focus on fixing these noises and tell them in advance to not bother with the tests as those have already been done?

I can't comment on the first noise, but the type of noise the second one is just some sympathetic resonance - not nice to have, must have a root cause, but probably come under the "due wear and tear" category now!

I had a piston slapping noise once with a year old Escort Ghia 1.6, I forced Ford down the independant engineer's report route, after a year they obliged and all I got was "typical of a car of this age and mileage"!

It may just be a normal mechanical noise, I'm not a mechanic so I can't comment on the noise but if there's nothing wrong with the car then there's nothing that can be repaired under warranty.

The second noise sounds like an old classic lorry ticking over.

Not acceptable in my opinion and worth reporting to Skoda UK how unhappy you are with an otherwise excellent car.

We pay a lot of hard earned money for these cars and deserve better treatment.

Why do sales people and mechanics often pretend everything is 'normal' when it clearly isn't?;I'm sure if it was their car they would do something about it.

No one else here has it on their Fabia so it's not 'normal'.

Stick to your guns until they fix it.
