Ithaca High School
Climate Action Exposition
Join us for the IHS Climate Action Expo!
Sunday, May 21, 2023 from 1-5 pm
Ithaca High School Welcome Center
Sponsored by IHS GOAT
1401 N. Cayuga St, Ithaca NY
Our Goal:
Informing participants about the realities of the climate crisis and equipping them with a range of tools to address it by partnering with community organizations to provide numerous demonstrations of practical decarbonizing solutions, from composting to transportation alternatives, renewable energy, lobbying efforts, urban planning, building practices, and much more.
Our Guiding Principles:
The Climate Action Exposition will focus on educating participants about the importance of achieving environmental justice through practical and equitable steps, such as:
Grappling with the history that shapes our present climate reality and reflecting on the history of the land we occupy (colonialism/imperialism, Industrial and Neolithic Revolutions, Indigenous oppression, etc.)
Understanding environmental racism and fighting for racial justice
Lobbying for effective state, local and federal legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Integrating more walking and cycling into our daily lives
Reducing reliance on fossil fuels
Installing heat-exchange HVAC systems
Switching to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
Learning best practices for composting
Sustainable gardening
In addition to reimagining the future specific to the environment, we recognize the importance of accounting for inequities and fighting against all systems of oppression. The climate movement, both historically and currently, is very white-dominated. We believe both the transition and end-goal of the climate movement must prioritize the needs and leadership of marginalized communities. This just transition cannot be achieved without inclusivity and diverse perspectives, because those who have experienced systems of oppression first-hand have the greatest understanding on how to dismantle them.
