Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Dec. 8

In a vote that ended Dec. 8, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Dec. 3.

Fall winners through Oct. 20 should have received their certificates, which recently were sent to the athletic departments. The remaining certificates will be mailed at the end of December.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week

Ohio boys basketball team: Little Miami – Little Miami opened its season with a 68-54 conference victory against Walnut Hills.

Ohio girls basketball team: Mount Notre Dame – The Cougars went 3-0 in their opening week, topping Lakota East, Seton and Dublin Coffman.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Boone County – The Rebels are 3-0 with victories over Newport Central Catholic, Highlands and Tates Creek.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Scott – Scott topped Ludlow 71-38 before beating Newport 60-28 in the Donna Murphy Classic.

Boys winter team: St. Xavier swimming – The AquaBombers beat Elder 190.5-93.5 in a dual meet before winning the Mason Invitational with 462 points on Dec. 2.

Girls winter team: Highlands wrestling – At the Lady Indians Tomahawk Classic, Highlands scored 82 team points to finish in third overall at the meet.

Football player: Jack Lonaker, Cooper – He led the Jaguars with 10 tackles, grabbed an interception and forced a fumble in the Class 5A state championship game.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Will Schaefer, Ross – He scored 23 points with five rebounds in the Rams’ 67-33 win over Talawanda to open the season.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Sam Henline, Taylor – He led the scoring in a 63-59 overtime over Northwest. He had 20 points, shooting 7-of-12 including four 3-pointers, while also posting six rebounds and three steals.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Maria Garza, Ursuline – She had a double-double of 19 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals in a season-opening win over Colerain.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Mia Hankerson, Reading – She had a near double-double of 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in a win over Lockland.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Connor Weinel, Campbell County – He scored 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting and also had 15 rebounds in the Camels’ 58-34 win over Dixie Heights to open the season.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: India Tye, Holmes – The eighth-grader scored a team-high 31 points against Carroll County. She also had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Boys bowling: Jackson Mosbaugh, New Richmond – He shot a 432 (218-214) to lead the Lions to a match win over Wilmington.

Girls bowling: Alyssa Bechtol, Dixie Heights – She bowled a perfect 300 game against Boone County Nov. 30.

Ice hockey: Peter Marietta, Mason – Marietta had one goal and three assists in two games over the weekend, including a tough 4-2 win against the Troy Trojans.

Ohio boys swimmer/diver: Liam Bien, St. Xavier – He won the 500-yard freestyle and was the 50-yard freestyle runner-up at the Mason Invitational. He also helped the Bombers win two relays.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver: Caroline Hinker, Fenwick – She won the 100-yard individual medley and the 50-yard butterfly, and helped her team to two runner-up relay finishes at the Dayton Christian Sprint Meet.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys swimmer/diver: Noah Gracey, Highlands – He took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Mason Invitational with a time of 1:05.86.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls swimmer/diver: Kella Pentiuk, Boone County – The eighth-grader won the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke and contributed to two winning relays at a tri-meet on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys wrestler: T.J. Meyer, Walton-Verona – Meyer pinned five opponents to finish in first at 138 pounds at the Bearcat Brawl.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls wrestler: Laila Pinkston, Highlands – Pinkston was the runner-up of the 126-pound class at the Lady Indians Tomahawk Classic while helping lead Highlands to a third-place finish.
