ZRH security confiscates bottle tops

Departed ZRH this morning. 2 presciption bottles with solid pills. Security flagged bag and took tops off then handed them back with a ziploc with a hole larger than the pills. Complaints fell on deaf ears. They were doing to the same to everyone.

Imbeciles. These are the same people who sell knives in the airport to arriving passengers and passengers traveling to countries without cowards in charge of their security.

Did they handle your pills, or just take the tops?

Maybe they felt sorry for all the bad publicity their fellow screeners in America have been getting on FT and wanted to take some of the heat off.

Or was it the new prescription pill bomb threat?

I think it's a race to see which country can implement the most assinine rules and procedures when it comes to air travel security.

Sadly, I think the USA is still leading the race.

Europe is catching up...Brussels would like to apply those measures to ALL European airports

The worst part is that if asked to defend such a stupid procedure, screeners and their supervisors will all-too-often resort to the veil of keeping security procedures a secret (in the US, "SSI" information).

I'd love to hear an honest and real explanation for what purpose confiscating pill bottle tops serves.

I've got an idea...The airlines should issue us all kimonos and sandals for the flights, make us change into them, and then we turn them in at the arrival airport.

No hand luggage whatsoever.

What a minute, maybe that isn't such a good idea...

I think this deserves an award for the stupidest action by airport security in....maybe forever?

Can you PM me or post the particulars of this situation...date, concourse, screener names/vendor (if available)...I want to send a nastygram to the ZRH airport administrator.

Well it looks like the authorities and the politicians do not want us ordinary breadwinners or vacationers to travel- only the priviledged bureaucrats and their bosses

Those Swiss sure don't mess around! I'm sure everyone boarding at ZRH feels a lot safer knowing that pill bottles won't be used to blow up the plane.

BTW, be forewarned about the long (i.e. 30-60min) security lines at ZRH for US-bound flights. The peak departure time is 11am-2pm, and we almost missed our flight. (We were operating under the mistaken assumption that the wait time was minimal based upon our prior connection within Europe. But the US flights use a different wing.)
