    An Awful Concert

The Atlanta rap group, Awful Records, has come a long way from performing at dive bars or all-out sketchy venues. The group had recently performed a Red Bull event at St. John at Hackney Church. A rather peculiar location to have a rap concert, but indelible none the less. Doors opened to the public at 6PM and what appeared externally as a Church with its grand internal organ, was made to look like a night club. Literally, the 1799 church organ on the second floor had lights attached to it, shining down on the stage which is where the alter would be located. It wasn’t long until Kilo Kish, from Orlando Florida, started off the night by introducing herself with the song “Hello, Lakisha” singing about her family and identity. Other songs she performed such as “Locket” and “Navy” may have been too slow for the crowd’s taste which was a bit unfortunate. Next, both Lord Narf and Ethereal took the stage turning the Congregation into a mosh pit by performing songs including “World” and “Can’t Breath”. Even though Ethereal is in a wheelchair, it did not stop him from dancing and preaching on stage. Keith Charles Spacebar and Tommy Genesis eventually came out and rather than spending their time on the stage, they spent most of their time swimming and dancing with the crowd. Blood orange then made a special appearance performing his Indie Rock and Jazzy new wave hits which soothed and calmed the crowd for the next performer, Abra. Abra combined both her spiritual voice with her own distinct productions skills. Her gracefulness in the tone of her voice mixed well with the rhythmic bass and drumline. Finally, the event closed with Awful’s nominal leader, Father. He started his performance by rapping in front of the organ and eventually processed back to the altar/stage where the Awful group had been dancing. Father’s throbbing beats and catchy refrains had the crowd jumping. He ended the concert with the song he blew up with “Look at Wrist” which was fulfilling to hear live. Overall, the experience was like no other and the group’s performance was extravagant. As a whole, we came together to worship our father in a unique environment and it truly was a transformative experience.

  • It was absolutely amazing. The vibe was awesome. I kind of wish there was someone to let us know when the show started because we were sitting outside and we missed about 15 mins of the show but other than that it was amazing.
