Enquirer names Cincinnati high school athletes of the week for April 29

In a vote that ended April 29, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through April 24.

The winter 2022 certificates have been mailed and should have arrived at athletic departments.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to mlaughman@enquirer.com. 

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Send your nominations by Monday morning for this week's high school sports action.

The winners are:

Ohio boys spring team of the week: Elder track and field – Acting as host for the Rally’s Invitational, Elder took first place, scoring more than 200 points.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys spring team of the week: Cooper baseball – The Jags went 3-1, beating Boone County 1-0, Scott 4-1 and Newport Central Catholic 5-2 before being edged 3-2 by Lafayette in the Doc Morris Invitational.

Ohio girls spring team of the week: Milford softball – The Eagles outscored Winton Woods 28-0 in a doubleheader April 20, then beat Western Brown 16-5 and Little Miami 6-3.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls spring team of the week: Conner softball – The Lady Cougars are now winners of four of their last five after beating Ryle 2-0, Boone County 7-3 and Dayton 11-0.

Ohio big school baseball player: Evan Weyler, St. Xavier – The senior went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI in a 9-6 win over St. John's Jesuit April 24.

Ohio small school baseball player: Reagan Burch, Blanchester – In two games, the senior captain went 6-for-7, batting .857 with 2 RBIs, 6 runs scored, 3 stolen bases, and 1 hit-by-pitch.

Northern Kentucky baseball player: Corbin Fletcher, Cooper – He gave up one run and five hits in six innings, striking out 11, in Cooper’s 4-1 win over Scott.

Boys big-school lacrosse: Luke Ray, Milford – The junior had 2 goals and 2 assists in the 18-9 win over Lebanon April 20, adding 3 goals and 3 assists in the 11-10 overtime win over Springboro April 22.

Boys small-school lacrosse: Tristan Davis, Cincinnati Country Day – He had 3 goals, 2 assists, 15 ground balls, 16 draw controls in the 15-4 win over Madeira April 19.

Girls big-school lacrosse: Sidney Voss, Mount Notre Dame – The senior had 4 goals, 1 assist, 9 draw controls, 1 ground ball and 1 caused turnover in the 12-9 win over Anderson April 19.

Girls small-school lacrosse: Caroline Soller, Mariemont – The junior scored 4 goals, 1 assist, 1 ground ball, 6 draw controls and one caused turnover in the 15-5 win over CHCA April 21. She had 7 goals, 5 ground balls, 8 draw controls in the 18-14 win over Bishop Watterson April 23. Against Indian Hill, she had 4 goals and an assist, along with 7 draw controls and 3 ground balls.

Northern Kentucky lacrosse: Jaiden Ford, Notre Dame – She broke the school career record for draw controls in a win over Frederick Douglass last week.

Ohio big school softball player: Natalie McGuire, Colerain – The freshman went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBI in a 16-12 win over Seton April 23.

Ohio small school softball player: Maggie Graham, Taylor – The sophomore shortstop led her team this past week in four games going 8-for-14 with 9 RBI and 4 doubles. She struck out zero times with a .900 fielding percentage.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana softball player: Molly Sharp, Conner – She pitched a complete-game, one-hitter, striking out 12, to lead the Cougars to a 2-0 district win over Ryle April 19. The next day, she allowed one earned run on four hits as the Cougars beat Boone County 7-3 in another district game. She then had three hits and three RBI in a win over Dayton.

Singles tennis player: Andrew Vass, Lakota East – He defeated Elder last Wednesday and Princeton on Thursday at first singles, helping Lakota East to team wins.

Boys doubles tennis: Sam Davidson-Carter Pate, Ross – The first doubles team beat their Badin opponents April 20, 6-3, 6-4.

Ohio boys big-school track and field athlete: Logan Owens, Georgetown – The senior won the high jump at the Western Brown Invitational April 18 with a score of 5-feet-8-inches.

Ohio boys small-school track and field athlete: William Ebert, Clark Montessori – The sophomore won the 3,200-meter run at the 2022 Downtown Go Around April 23.

Northern Kentucky boys track and field athlete: Kaelin Reynolds, Ryle – The senior set the school record for the men’s 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 7:01:99, going fifth overall at the Eastern Relays at the University of Louisville.

Ohio girls big-school track and field athlete: Reagan Brunett, Loveland – The junior won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles at the Colerain Invitational April 19.

Ohio girls small-school track and field athlete: Maria Orzali, Clark Montessori – The senior won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the 2022 Downtown Go Around April 23.

Northern Kentucky girls track and field athlete: Chloe Hein, Bishop Brossart – She won all four of her events at Campbell County’s Donnie Carnes Meet, the 100, 200, long jump and 4-x-200, to lead the Mustangs to the team championship.

Boys volleyball: Will Huelskamp, Lakota East – The freshman had 9 digs in a sweep at Hamilton, then set a new season-high with 15 digs against McNicholas on April 20.

Boys archer: Lincoln Cyboron, Ryle – The seventh-grader finished in 16th place in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association state archery tournament with a 281 and led the Raiders to 16th place in the team standings.

Girls archer: Maddisen Strunk, Dixie Heights – She shot 281 in the KHSAA state tournament with a score of 281, leading the Colonels to 13th place in the team standings.
