About the Role

The Highway Division 14 serves Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Polk, Swain, and Transylvania counties. The Resident Engineer’s office is seeking students’ interest in engineering. The position is in Arden, NC. Fellows will be assigned several projects during their time with the Office.  A sampling of projects may consist of:
 
  • Inspection 
  • Contract Administration
  • Roadway drainage and puddling issues
  • Traffic Signals and Signal Plans + Design
  • Congestion Management
 
What Will You Do
  • Learn the inner workings of a NCDOT Resident Engineers office.  From inspection to contract administration and everything in between
  • Work in the field (aka outdoors + off site locations) and learn the ins and outs of a NCDOT’s engineer’s job
  • Have direct interaction daily with various levels of the organization.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, which ends with a demonstration of your findings and recommendations back to a leadership panel. 
 
What Skills You Possess
  • All majors accepted, preference given to students with an interest in engineering and adjacent fields of study. 
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills. Able to communicate concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and programs simultaneously and successfully in a dynamic environment, prioritize effectively, and navigate high-pressure situations often with tight deadlines.

 Eligibility Requirements
  • Must possess bachelor’s degree from, or be currently enrolled in masters, or professional level program (e.g., Law School) at an accredited North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) earned between 2020 – 2023 Or be a current graduate student.
  • Must provide proof of College or University attendance/graduation by attaching a transcript (official or unofficial)To help you with your interview, we suggest that you do your research: know some background about NCDOT and the business area to which you are applying. We also suggest that you practice your interview skills by discussing your experience and job history with a family member, friend, or mentor.
