Random Cryptocoin |
StartCOIN (START) is a decentralised, open-source cryptocurrency forked from Litecoin in June 2014. It was conceived as the first cryptocurrency to support crowdfunding (through the StartJOIN.com platform), a way for start-up companies to raise funds in the Internet era. Technically, StartCOIN is a proof-of-work coin that uses the X11 array of hashing algorithms, DigiShield as the difficulty retargeting mechanism, and fast 1-minute transaction confirmation time. The total coin supply is 84 million startcoins, half of which were pre-mined; these are continuously being donated to new start-ups and active StartJOIN users. Original announcement.

Did You Know? |
In the early days of Bitcoin, anybody running the Bitcoin software was able to "mine" coins. However, as the difficulty of mining increased, coin generation has become the domain of specialist miners, large farms of highly specialist and expensive computer systems. Newer cryptocurrencies have been trying to prevent this by repeated hashing of blockchain transactions, thus making it harder and more processor and memory intensive to build specialist hardware for mining cryptocoins. These "multi-hashings" have become known as X11, X13, X15, X17, etc, with the number behind the X representing simply the number of algorithms used.

Burstcoin developer "luxe" has announced the release of Burstcoin (BURST) 1.2.7, a new stable version of the project's Nxt-based cryptocurrency. Burstcoin, launched in August 2014 with a total coin supply of 2.1 billion, has replaced Nxt's proof-of-stake way of generating coins with a "proof-of-capacity" method, using the miner's unused hard disk space to create burstcoins. The new version comes with several new features and bug fixes: "New wallet version 1.2.7. Changelog: integration of decentralized crowdfunding in main navigation (automated transactions); add to blockCacheSize only if not on fork; fix for multi-byte characters in name and alias; reversion of basetarget caching." Here is the brief release announcement as published on the project's user forums. The Burstcoin wallet client is available for download as single zip file that works on Linux, OS X and Windows: burstcoin-1.2.7.zip (8.93MB). Once launched from the command line, the graphical wallet becomes available at localhost:8125 in any web browser. The source code of Burstcoin 1.2.7 is available from GitHub: 1.2.7.tar.gz (9.52MB). |

NuBits developer "sigmike" has announced the release of NuBits (NBT) Nu Client 3.0.0, a major update of the project's a proof-of-stake (PoS) cryptocurrency that is pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 1:1. This release updates the PoS protocol to version 3 and adds three new currencies: "I uploaded Nu version 3.0.0 to the repository. A new protocol version 3 was added. It will become active at 14:00 UTC, 14 days after 60% of the last 2,000 blocks have been generated by this new version. After this protocol activates, shareholders will be able to issue custodian grants on the 3 new currencies - CN-NBT, EU-NBT and X-NBT (the NuBit currency being renamed to US-NBT). The new protocol will also accept unknown currencies, so that adding other currencies will not require a new protocol change. NEW • Cryptocurrency Release: Zcash (ZEC) 1.0.0 |
0.0878 BTC
(Source: Poloniex)
|
Zcash (ZEC) has launched! The proof-of-work (Equihash) cryptocurrency project whose primary goal is to assure the privacy and anonymity of transactions, has released the genesis block (the first block of transactions recorded in the blockchain). Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox made the announcement of the project's blog: "The Zcash blockchain is live! We released the genesis block today, and people all around our planet have begun mining and transacting on it. Our homepage links to a download page where you can find instructions on installing the Zcash software; an explainer video will be posted there shortly. If you feel confident using this kind of Linux command-line tool, then dive in! The more people who do so the better." At this early stage in the life of Zcash, there are no easy-to-use graphical wallets, only command-line clients available for Linux only. The developers have released a DEB package for Debian "Jessie"; users running other Linux distributions will need to compile their own client (instructions here). The source code is available from GitHub: v1.0.0.tar.gz (6.95MB). The new cryptocurrency seems to be in very high demand at this early stage of mining and is currently trading at around 25 BTC for 1 ZEC (or more than 17,000 USD for 1 Zcash unit). |

Bitcoin (BTC) Core 0.13.1 has been released. Although presented as a "minor" update, this version brings the possibility to activate the much talked-about "segwit" soft fork: "Bitcoin Core version 0.13.1 released. This is a new minor version release, including activation parameters for the segwit softfork, various bug fixes and performance improvements, as well as updated translations. Segregated witness (segwit) is a soft fork that, if activated, will allow transaction-producing software to separate (segregate) transaction signatures (witnesses) from the part of the data in a transaction that is covered by the txid. This provides several immediate benefits: elimination of unwanted transaction malleability; capacity increase; weighting data based on how it affects node performance; signature covers value; linear scaling of sighash operations...." Luke Champine has announced the release of Sia (SC) 1.0.3, a new version of the project's decentralised storage platform where users contribute disk storage from their computers and earn siacoins, tokens that can be saved or exchanged for bitcoins on popular exchanges. From the release notes: "Sia 1.0.3. This is a patch release that improves the stability and performance of the renter, in addition to many other minor bug fixes and miscellaneous tweaks. Our goal for this release was to make Sia viable for real-world use, even if only on a small scale. Only time will tell if we achieved that goal, but we are optimistic. Much of the work that went into this release was aided by our new testing framework, the Ant Farm. Our next targeted release is v1.1.0, which will introduce some long-awaited features (such as instant wallet unlocking) as well as considerable performance upgrades for the renter and host." Sia's software clients are available in Sia (command line) or Sia-UI (graphical) variants; download from GitHub: Sia-UI-v1.0.3-linux-x64.zip (51.3MB, signature), Sia-UI-v1.0.3-osx-x64.zip (126MB, signature), Sia-UI-v1.0.3-win32-x64.zip (61.4MB, signature). Vcash (XVC) is a cryptocurrency project formerly known as Vanillacoin (VLC), rebranding earlier this year into Vcash. It is a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake coin with an interesting feature called "ZeroTime", a technology that allows a recipient to own the coins and be able to spend them immediately - even before the transaction is confirmed and consolidated on the blockchain. The new release, version 0.4.9, was announced earlier today: "Vcash version 0.4.9 has been released." The brief changelog includes the following items: "Added support for HD Keychain that can be restored from a seed (this feature is disabled in configuration by default). Database can now be configured to run in-memory or memory-mapped. Bug fixes." Here is the full release announcement as published on the project's News page. (Source: Poloniex)
|
NEM core developer "gimer" has announced the release of NEM (XEM) 0.6.82, the latest beta build of the project's Java-based cryptocurrency wallet client. This release brings a major change to the way NEM transaction fees are calculated. "NEM beta 0.6.82. There will be a fee fork at height 875,000 (which is roughly at the end of November) where a new fee structure will kick in." The new transaction fees will have the following structure: "Non-mosaic XEM transfers pay 1 XEM per 10,000 XEM transferred, capped at 25 XEM, transactions under 20,000 XEM pay 1 XEM. Mosaics with a divisibility of 0 and a maximum supply of 10,000 are called small business mosaics, the fee is 1 XEM for any transfer of a small business mosaics. For other mosaics, the formula is more complicated. Basically, a XEM equivalent for the mosaic transfer is calculated and then i) is applied. To compensate for mosaics that have considerably lower supply than the XEM mosaic, a supply related adjustment is made to that fee." Continue to the release announcement for full details. Download (the installer requires a 64-bit edition of Java 8): nemwallet-0.6.82-osx-installer.app.tgz (32.1MB), nemwallet-0.6.82-windows-installer.exe (33.1MB). Everton Fraga has announced the release of Ethereum (ETH) 0.8.6, the project's latest stable version a new hardfork, following sustained DDoS attack on the network. From the release notes: "Ethereum wallet and Mist beta 0.8.6. This Wallet/Mist version contains the Geth 1.4.18 'Note 7', which includes the EIP150 1b/1c hardfork." The reasons for the hardfork are explained in a separate post: "During the last couple of weeks, the Ethereum network has been the target of a sustained attack. The attacker(s) have been very crafty in locating vulnerabilities in the client implementations as well as the protocol specification. While the recent patches have led to an overall increased resiliency in the client implementations, the attacks have also demonstrated that a lower-level change to the EVM pricing model is needed. For many users, the most visible consequence is probably that they are having difficulties getting transactions included in blocks."
