Charges Filed in Officer Involved Shooting

District Attorney Tim Ward has announced criminal charges have been filed in the February 19, 2021, high-speed chase that resulted in a California Highway Patrol officer being shot.

Marvin Chang, age 32 of Los Angeles County, is charged with eight counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, two counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, flight and evading a peace officer, throwing a substance at a vehicle, discharge of a firearm, criminal threats, and being a felon in possession of body armor, a firearm, and ammunition. Many charges are enhanced with special allegations that Chang intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury to a peace officer, intentional discharged a firearm,  and that he possesses a prior felony conviction for assault (2008, Los Angeles County). All charges are felonies.

Crimes allegedly occurring within Sequoia National Park are federal jurisdiction and are not charged above.  Due to the defendant’s current medical status, no arraignment has been scheduled.

If convicted on all charges, Chang faces life in prison.

The case is assigned to Supervising Deputy District Attorney Jessica Weatherly of the South County Division.
