Embracing Life and Honoring Death with End-of-Life Doulas

A Presentation by

Marilyn Halpern and Vanessa Johnston

A Doula is a trained companion who supports an individual through a significant health-related experience.  Many are familiar with how Doulas assist during childbirth, but did you know there are Doulas who offer special support and compassion at end-of-life?  On November 10, we'll hear from two Denver-based End-of-Life Doulas, Marilyn Halpern and Vanessa Johnston, who will share their knowledge on and experiences with these topics:

  • Creating a peaceful environment
  • Life reviews
  • Death vigils
  • Green burials
  • Home funerals

They will be available to answer your questions about this delicate time in one's existence.

Marilyn Halpern is an End-of-Life Doula trained at the University of Vermont, Larner College of Medicine.  In addition to being a Doula, Marilyn is the Owner and Executive Director of Aspen Guardianship and Care Services.  She has been serving our community as a Professional Guardian, Medical Power-of-Attorney, and Care Manager for 15 years.  She has been a Licensed Social Worker for 25 years.  She is a writer and contributes to Prime Time News where she writes a monthly column on Mindfulness.  Her latest column explores grief.  (Check it out here: https://www.myprimetimenews.com/the-mindful-path-grief/)  She serves on the national committee for Continuing Education for the National Guardianship Association.  Marilyn has presented at the National Guardianship Association and the Aging Life Care Association Conferences.  Fostering lifelong vitality and wellness is her passion.

Vanessa Johnston is an End-of-Life Doula trained through the International End-of-Life Doula Association in 2017.  She offers individualized and intersectional emotional and spiritual support for people and their loved ones experiencing palliative and/or hospice care.  Her passion is to help those who are dying approach their final milestone with love and meaning, instead of fear and anxiety.  She seeks to be a compassionate companion and serve as a witness in sacred service to honor the final chapter in others' stories.  She is the founder and Exective Director of Denver EOL Doula, LLC.  Vanessa is the Second Vice President and co-founder of Colorado End-of-Life Collaborative.
