Review
"Considering ending homework in your classroom but don't know how to address the pushback? Alice and Matt have done the research and created the rationales you've been looking for. Ditch That Homework is a must-have resource for every teacher, providing impactful solutions and alternatives to help students maximize learning during the school day." --Lisa Highfill, co-author, The HyperDoc Handbook
"Every day I talk to more educators and parents who are becoming convinced that homework isn't a good way to spend kids' time out of school. Ditch That Homework provides real-world ways to get off the homework train by working bell-to-bell and maximizing time in class, not sluffing off things to worksheets and word searches that don't benefit anyone academically." --Jon Corippo, CUE chief innovation officer
"Ditch That Homework is not just a book about why educators and parents should rethink homework, but it's a practical guidebook to how. Matt and Alice have filled this book chock-full of resources for educators, kindergarten and up, who want to begin or continue their journey towards ditching homework. As a parent of a young school-aged child, this book left me feeling empowered and inspired to continue to support the shift towards making homework obsolete." --Karly Moura, teacher on special assignment
"Matt and Alice have really approached a hot topic with honest and open experiences about the inequities they have experienced with homework! A practical guide, whether you're a novice or veteran teacher, to give resources and guide in the transformation of your teaching. Challenging the ideals of conventional practice to truly reach the whole child and re-light that spark in learning!" --Anne Kamper, instructional coach

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2017I am sure the content is great (based on ditch that textbook). However the Kindle format is screwed up. (At least for me. Android app) double pages, repeated blocks of text. Font and text size changes from page to page. Very hard to read.
Updated 8/9/17
After being censured by the Keeler mafia™, I decided to update my review after receiving the hardcopy (which I was planning to do anyway). And, as expected, its an excellent resource. I like that Matt has brought in elements from "ditch that textbook" to help with the transition away from the homework paradigm. There are links to resources, ideas and how the shift away from homework is relevant to the current educational framework. The ideas presented within fit the spirit of Common Core and NGSS (from my perspective). All in all...great stuff.
After doing my own research and testing with several devices, I think I figured out what was wrong. It had to do with the aspect ratio of my device. I used a device with a 16x10 ratio. problematic. Devices with 16x9 and 3x2 (most android tablets and iPads) seemed to display things correctly.
In any case, I am much happier with my physical copy. Dogeared and highlighted already...

- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2017I loved this book! It absolutely made me reconsider what I do in my classroom and how I think about homework. I have notes galore all over the book and post its sticking out of the book. I appreciate how simply Matt and Alice put the information and how they back it up with research, logic and their own experiences. They give practical suggestions and a variety of ideas from their own experiences as well as from other teachers that I am able to use in my own classroom. I will give this warning, be prepared to be overwhelmed (in the BEST way!) and want to start everything right away, but follow their advice and "take it a step at a time" and do what's best for kids. Just reading this book has given me a different way of considering why I do what I do in my classroom (overall, not just with homework) and I actually have practical steps for moving forward with this new way of thinking.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2017Ditch That Homework continues the trend by publisher Dave Burgess Consulting of providing books to educators that are timely, useful and chock full of ideas and resources. This book is full of great ideas, resources, access to research on the efficacy of homework and so much more. Personally I love books that gives me those kinds of things that make implementation in a classroom or school quick and easy. This book does all that.
The title of the book is almost misleading. What this book does is provide modern teaching strategies and pedagogy that are designed to make homework almost unnecessary. As a teacher, you're not necessarily "ditching homework" so much as you are using class time more effectively. Matt Miller and Alice Keeler fill the book with great ideas and teaching methods from their own experiences in the classroom and not untested theory. This should be a must read whether you are an administrator, lead teacher or classroom teacher in grades K-12.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2017If a book could be my spirit animal, this would be it. The book is titled "Ditch That Homework", but it is so much more than that. It's really about a change of mindset about education. The book is written by teachers, for teachers. It not only gives you practical ways to Ditch HW, but it comes with resources galore. Alice and Matt have done a fabulous job. I have held the same beliefs as they do, for a long time, but seeing it written in words confirms that ditching homework, in a purposeful, meaningful way, is what is right for kids and teachers. We are creating leaders and innovators and this book inspires teachers to inspire kids. Thank you for writing this and showing me I am not alone. I highly recommend this book and all books from DBC Publishing.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2018This book has changed the way I look at how I run my classroom. It was full of ideas and alternatives to homework assignments. It was extremely easy to read and incorporate. I would recommend it to any teacher - veteran or new!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2017As a veteran elective teacher, I delved into this book thinking its methodologies would apply more to the elementary or core teacher who is dead set on assigning homework because "that's the way it's always been done." To be frankly real, I was hoping to pick up the snippets that Ms. Keeler is known for so that I could share them with my elementary age daughter's teachers (who were dead set on assigning homework because "that's the way it's always been done").
I could not have been more wrong. This book has changed the way I teach, and my students and I are better for it. We've flipped the classroom and I'm never going back. Kudos to the authors for championing an education revolution.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2018Where do I begin? Do I love this book as a teacher or as a mom!! The book focuses on making the classroom much more interactive. It tells the truth about HOMEWORK. HOMEWORK STINKS!! Homework stinks for the kids, the parents, everyone. My best part of the book was the very beginning The nightly tears, the arguing. IS IT WORTH THE FRUSTRATION. If this is happening in my house, it has to be happening in others. This book helped me see as a teacher, what you assign as formative work CAN and SHOULD be completed in the classroom!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Issues for reflectionn.
Whether or not one wants to set homework, placing emphasis on maximising classroom time is a worthwhile exercise. I believe children should be doing work after class hours but they should be using these few minutes each day to revise and reflect on their choices from the work covered at school that day.
