Amazon.com Review

Cruising 35,000 feet above the earth, a twin-engine commercial jet encounters an accident that leaves 3 dead, 56 wounded, and the cabin in shambles. What happened? With a multi-billion-dollar company-saving deal on the line, Casey Singleton is sent by her hard-driving boss to uncover the mysterious circumstances that led to the disaster before more people die. But someone doesn't want her to find the truth. Airframe bristles with authentic information, technical jargon, and the command of detail Crichton's readers have come to expect. Check out Amazon.com's Airframe feature and read an excerpt from the book!

From Publishers Weekly

Like his role model, H.G. Wells, Crichton likes to moralize in his novels. In this slight, enjoyable thriller, the moral is the superficiality of TV, especially of its simplistic news coverage. Readers willing to overlook the irony of this message being broadcast by the man who created TV's top-rated drama (E.R.) will marvel again at Crichton's uncanny commercial instincts. The event that launches the story, conceived long before TWA Flight 800's last takeoff, is an airline disaster. Why did a passenger plane "porpoise"-pitch and dive repeatedly-enroute from Hong Kong to Denver, killing four and injuring 56? That's what Casey Singleton, v-p for quality assurance for Norton Aircraft, has to find out fast. If Norton's design is to blame, its imminent deal with China may collapse, and the huge company along with it. With Casey as his unsubtle focus-she's one of the few Crichton heroines, an all-American gal who's more plot device than character-Crichton works readers through a brisk course in airline mechanics and safety. The accretion of technical detail, though fascinating, makes for initially slow reading that speeds up only fitfully when Casey is menaced by what seem to be union men angry over the Chinese deal. But as she uncovers numerous anomalies about the accident, and as high corporate intrigue and a ratings-hungry TV news team enter the picture, the plot complicates and suspense rises, peaking high above the earth in an exciting re-creation of the flight. It's possible that Crichton has invented a new subgenre here-the industrial thriller-despite elements (video-generated clues, for one) recycled from his earlier work. It's certain that, while this is no Jurassic Park, he's concocted another slick, bestselling, cinema-ready entertainment. 2,000,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection; film rights sold to Disney for a reported $8-$10 million; simultaneous large-print edition and Random House audio and CD editions.

Fantastic Book but Subpar Delivery.
The book itself? 5/5 stars. Its a great read for anyone who likes watching Air Crash Investigation documentaries. An absolutely thrilling read. However; the book came packaged in soft plastic packaging with zero padding. so the cover is visibly damaged on delivery. It has tears, dents, and scuffs. Luckily I had gotten the hardcover; but anyone who gets a paperback beware. Any book should be packaged in a cardboard box with foam padding inside. This also came after I originally ordered the book about a month ago; where it was never shipped and Amazon tracking kept delaying it. Finally I cancelled the order and tried again, and it arrived in a few days.

For me this book is why I fell in love with Crichton's writing, as I started with Andromeda Strain and this book follows the same motif. For those of you who don't like jargon, don't like what we in the writing business call "data dumps" and don't like looking at "print outs" in different, lighter fonts, this book is not for you. If you enjoyed Andromeda Strain you'll find this book much like that one.
This is all about the investigation of mythical plane disaster from a mythical airline, in a plane made by a mythical company based at the Burbank Airport. Casey Singleton, a woman pushing forty who is a company VP, was put in charge of media and investigations on this air disaster that killed four and injured over fifty people. The factor everyone blames are the slates, that aren't supposed to come out during cruising flight, but may have or did they? That is the question.
Complicating this is her boss, the local unions who fear job losses and are taking action against the company, plus a twenty-eight year old woman news producer from a network show called Newsline.
The story is told in short vignettes that move from building to building, from Glendale to LAX to New York. Crichton obviously researched the whole investigation process and from that comes our charts, print-outs and data dump.
BUT, this book is not much different in content than the popular movie Sully starring Tom Hanks. That, too, is about an investigation into what happened and people got into it. The movie Miracle Landing about the Hawaiian flight whose cabin top sheered off was also popular with TV goers (I knew some of the Ultrasonic testers who went to Hawaii to check the rest of the fleet out). This book is along those lines. I read it in four days. Crichton's writing style is great, he keeps tension with the guys from the union that you're not supposed to screw with, with her new intern, and with all the other people looking into the incident.
For me (and not for everyone) it's best book I've read in years!

I read this book 28 years after release, so some things are dated, as expected. The level of detail is remarkable. The author does a very good job of explaining the convoluted relationships between aircraft manufacturers, domestic and foreign airlines, jet engine suppliers, labor unions, regulatory bodies, and especially broadcast media. The story strangely minimizes oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration and ignores the National Transportation Safety Board almost completely. The details of an investigation into a serious Airline flight incident are very well presented. The technical detail and jargon used is probably too much for most readers. The author loads up on the drama, tension, and urgency to a point where it’s detrimental to the story. We encounter Executive rivalries, potential aircraft sales, serious labor unrest, technical problems, personal issues, and media intrusion. It works for the tension and suspense, but harms the believability of the story. There are many holes and gaps in the plot and details. Complex issues are used in a simplistic good versus evil story. What really surprised me was the author framing TV News as the ‘Enemy of the People’ regarding aviation issues. That’s his prerogative, of course, but it’s way too heavy handed here. I found the climax to be rather ridiculous, leading into a rushed fairy tale ending.

But is there such thing as a "bad" Crichton?
An accident on board a plane ; an overworked VP of the aicraft manufacturer ; an ambitious but not very scrupulous TV producer ; and some angry union members.
    What happened during this flight?
The black (not black) box doesn't always tell the whole story...

    5.0 out of 5 stars テクノサスペンスの名手の本領発揮&マスメディアの怖さ
Reviewed in Japan on February 12, 2014

    Kindle

23 dollars for a hard cover? I'll know better next time. This is as cheap a knock off as they come. The pages look like they have been cut with a hacksaw. Having said that, it is a brilliant novel. Easily my favourite Crichton story. Just try and find a legit copy somewhere else. So five stars for the story, zero stars for the book seller.
