The Sussexes’ Time Magazine cover led to salty, bitter tears in the UK

US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions hearing “An Update from Federal Officials on Efforts to Combat COVID-19

I’m sure almost everyone saw that Salt Island was in full meltdown mode all day yesterday, basically as soon as Time Magazine released their covers for the Time 100, or Time’s Most Influential People list. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex not only made the Time 100 list, they were one of the covers, with an exclusive (and lovely) photoshoot from Montecito. Britain’s biggest tabloids hired “body language experts” to cry about how powerful Meghan looked and how Harry was cowering behind her or something. There were tears spilt about Photoshopping and don’t you know, the photoshoot happened “on a terrace at their $14.65 million mansion.” Won’t anyone think about the bathrooms?!

I forgot to mention this, but as soon as I saw the cover, I knew the Daily Mail would do one of those crazy cost-breakdowns of everything Meghan and Harry were wearing and what everything costs in every photo. Yeah, the Daily Mail did just that. The DM claims Meghan wore $384,000 worth of jewelry in the cover shot, which included a Cartier Love bangle, Princess Diana’s Cartier Tank watch and two pinky rings from Shiffon which are apparently supposed to represent “female empowerment.” She also wore her engagement ring and wedding band, shock.

Meghan’s olive green outfit was sourced to The Row, which of course means $$$. I guess I don’t get why everyone on Salt Island is freaking out to this degree? I mean… they’re not paying for it. Meghan and Harry are paying for their own clothes and jewelry now. Plus, these might have been loaned to them for the photoshoot.

I can see the powerful woman with a cowering man image, I guess… you really have to have the default mindset men should stand taller and step forward and appear broad to show their strength to not see his confidence.

Meghan’s hair steals the show for me though.

They all need to get over this power couple paying their own bills and living their own lives. The longer the BM stays fixated on them the more it highlights how toxic things were and are.

    • MY3CENTS says:

Yeah, that hair is totally 70s vibes in the best way.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

Love, love, love her hair. Thick and lustrous.

      • Mac says:

The hair is perfect. Meghan looks so beautiful.

      • pottymouth pup says:

my favorite take on this picture was posted on twitter “This looks like Harry is her hairdresser and he’s looking into the mirror explaining what he did to her layers.”

I can’t stop thinking this every time I see the pic now

    • Moxylady says:

Harry is wearing bracelets. They mean something. Anyone know?

      • fluffy_bunny says:

He usually wears ones he picks up in Africa. Him and Meghan had matching ones at the beginning of their relationship.

      • Debbie says:

Just a minute. Let me get my body language experts with the secret decoder rings. Wait for it, I’m off to the Batmobile right now.

    • MsIam says:

I just see a couple in love and looking hot! I think you hit it, mindset is key.

    • swirlmamad says:

At this point, it’s just pathetic. It isn’t even that upsetting anymore….the BM look like complete fools carrying on like this. Guess what? THEY’RE JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU. Get over it already.

    • BeanieBean says:

Harry is really tall & Meghan is not; the photos just illustrate the difficulty of trying to photograph two people of such disparate height. I think they’re lovely photos of two lovely people, and the one of Harry & Meghan standing in front of the window probably best shows their height differences. And the reaction from the British rags is exactly what we expect from them; what a bunch of bozos. Omid’s tweet was hilarious. Seems he’s not pulling punches any more.

      • Bettyrose says:

But the obvious solution is to have him holding her drapped across his arms to display his extreme manliness and her docile need for rescuing. (Sorry I clicked on the DM article and haven’t been greeted with that level of misogyny in awhile.)

      • BeanieBean says:

Bettyrose: oh my goodness! Harry as Fabio!

      • Seraphina says:

@BeanieBean – with long flowing red hair! LMAO!

      • Courtney B says:

I just wish that photo was the cover. They look so great and the proportions are better. Even though you know Meghan’s still on a box. Lol She’s so petite. And it’s their actual house but it makes it look like they’re in front of a backdrop. I LOVE her outfit, well both of them, but I love the olive one especially. That’s such a great color and style. She obviously likes that style of pant and both looks work the monochromatic neutrals. Can’t add anything more than what others have said about her hair, skin and makeup. Harry looks so much better here. They’re really in sync here. And even though they’re not really touching, just slightly on the side but no hands or an embrace like the cover, you still get more of a feel for them being a real couple than any of the Cambridge’s anniversary photos.

      • NiqGee says:

@Courtney B, it also feels like they’re sizing me up and judging me, but I kinda like it. Both are giving off major BDE and it’s fantastic.

    • Myra says:

It’s all blown out of proportions really. None of us spend hours trying to read into the body language of couples we know in real life. Whenever Harry and Meghan do anything, all kinds of experts come out of the woodwork analysing every minute detail. And that’s why they are the most influential, I guess.

      • Lorelei says:

I just checked and it wasn’t one of the headlines included in Omid’s tweet, but last night my husband actually gasped or screamed or something when I read one to him that said, “Harry CROUCHES behind wife in new photo” or something. My husband was like “Crouching?? What the hell is wrong with these people? What century are they living in?” Most of us — not all, but most, I think? — here on CB are women, but the one man I discussed it with was also horrified at the language used to describe Harry.

What I was sort of laughing at— and I know this is one of their long-held traditions so I’m truly not making fun of it —but, like, Harry poses for a photo in which he’s *slightly* behind his wife and the entire country loses their collective sh!t.

Then in a few months, there will be some sort of parade in which the men in the family, particularly their fave, Elegant Bill, will literally strut around with feathers in their caps, wearing kilts, long velvet robes, etc….I honestly do respect tradition, but the petty part of me REALLY wants to be like, “you think HARRY looks ‘effeminate’?” Then you go on to line the streets to applaud this ragtag-ass group (which I believe still includes Andrew? Not sure, but even if he’s out now, for a long time, it did), and see no hypocrisy??”

Even William and Kate were captured giggling at these getups once, I’m pretty sure. But then they look at those amazing photos of the Sussexes and are full of nasty opinions?? Just an incredibly backward group of people, my god.

    • macko says:

Then when you engage these assholes about giving an explanation for ALL THOSE PHOTOS OF PRINCES PHILLIP, WILLIAM, CHARLES, always standing behind their spouses, they become undone. One idiot on twitter rolled out the but they’re royal. To which I say, so is Harry. it didn’t end well for this moron. The selective armchair psychology, is not their strong suit.

  2. Krista says:

I’m a big Sussex stan, but that cover pose is not the best. I love the power pose by Meghan, but Harry could have been posed a bit different. Still seated, maybe with arms crossed? Arm around her waist? Just relaxed hands on his lap? I don’t know, just something about it isn’t great. They both look great, and the other photos? *chef’s kiss*

    • Amy Bee says:

@Krista: Nah, the pose was right. He sitting down so they can be the same height and he’s showing support for Meghan with his hand on her shoulder. His hands in his lap would have looked extremely awkward and separated him from Meghan. Btw, you don’t have to preface your criticism of them by saying you’re a big fan. That just sets off a red flag for some people including myself.

      • Betsy says:

Some people will countenance absolutely no criticism of anything remotely Meghan and Harry related, and people attempting to do so immediately get called Cambridge supporters.

      • Krista says:

@Amy Bee I get that and respect it. Too much criticism over the stupidest things has been lobbed at the Sussexes. I was just trying to avoid anyone thinking I was a troll or something. I just wanted to voice an opinion. I didn’t like that particular photo. The others I thought were beautiful. Apparently these days voicing your opinion gets your head bitten off (not by you, by others below).

      • Claire says:

I agree with Betsy; I interpreted it as here’s where I’m coming from and being considerate to do so. Just because you find someone(s) appealing, positive, charismatic, etc., doesn’t mean you can’t think they have a crap outfit on or a less than flattering pose from time to time. No red flags here.

      • Amy Bee says:

@Krista: if you want criticize Harry and Meghan go right ahead. You don’t have to preface it by saying you’re fan. I get why you’re saying it though you don’t want backlash but most people who say I’m a big fan but are usually not fans.

      • Geraldine Granger says:

There is a picture of Harry and Diana together with the same pose. Maybe they tried to recreate that.

      • MMadison says:

        Hmm

      • Yami says:

I read it as a protective/ bestowing power pose. In many ways, Harry has elevated Meghan. Individually, they were great, together they are powerhouses, but he has definitely given her a renewed distinction. I don’t mean that as criticism at all. He’s truly entrenched in the (problematic) systems of power the RF represents and his taking her as his wife, not only elevates her but also breaks down that system at once. Harry gives their power legitimacy (that’s why BM tries so hard to undermine him to no avail) and Meghan is its grace note. Harry is the soft power behind the throne, the monarchy suspected that I think, but now they know it. He can afford to sit behind her. He’s got nothing to prove.

      • Lorelei says:

@AmyBee, but do you really view Krista’s comment as “criticizing Harry and Meghan?” Because I don’t, at all. To me it’s just an innocuous observation about the placement of a particular photo. I think that’s why so many of us DO feel the need to preface any comment with the “I ❤️ M, but” — because anything we say that’s maybe not 1000% praise will be construed as criticism, so we want to try and make it clear from the outset that we’re not trolls, and that we do like her.

    • Over it says:

I choose her and she chooses me ,and what ever we have to face, we will tackle it together as a team. Harry words during his engagement interview.

      • Krista says:

@Over it And? I can get the sentiment (which I love BTW) but still not like a photograph pose. I thought they could have been posed differently to portray the dynamic power couple they are.

      • MF1 says:

He has really lived up to that sentiment, hasn’t he?

    • Ginger says:

The pose was perfect and probably done on purpose. Harry, himself, said he feels more comfortable in his skin than he ever has before and that he had his wife to thank for that. You would know that being a Sussex fan, as you claim. Harry is comfortable having Meghan in front and him supporting her. That’s proof of a happy and loving marriage. Harry is very comfortable in his masculinity and said himself that real men treat women with the dignity and respect they deserve.

    • Robyn says:

I’m with you on this @Krista. There’s something just slightly off with the proportions that takes me out of it. The photo of them standing in front of the window is THE ONE for me. Still conveys the same message and it’s HOT. I wish that was the cover instead.

      • Krista says:

@Robyn right?? LOVE that picture. Meghan looks like she won’t take no sh!t from anyone and Harry? *Swoon*

      • Margaret says:

Am I missing something here?. This is about the honour, not the nit picking about the photo, lets not flip the script. Wow this is what it sounds like when trolls cry. Picky, picky. Congratulations to the Sussexes for making the list, and oh, happy birthday to prince harry.

      • BabsORIG says:

@Margaret, totally agree with your post. Yesterday thread had 300+ posts nitpicking and criticizing the pose, the photoshop, Meghan is boxy, Harry was photoshopped in the picture, Harry should have sat this or that way, no Harry shouldn’t have touched Meghan, etc, like everything was nitpicked to point of tiresome. I thought that would be the end of that. But nooooo, this thread has to just pick up where they left off, I guess 🙄🙄. And it doesn’t matter which picture would have been the cover, it would still have been photoshopped and y’all would still have whinged about that too and said this or the other picture is better yadda, yadda yadda, there’s no winning, nothing is ever good enough. I mean one can not like the pose, etc, its okay but must you continue to flog that already dead horse every thread?
Congrats to the Sussexes for making this list, really happy for them 👏🏾. I think Meg is growing her hair because she’s wanting to walk her talk. we’re still in the middle of a pandemic.
And a belated very happy birthday to my favorite ginger 🎈.

      • Krista says:

Sorry @babsORIG I didn’t realize there was a list of things on here that we can or cannot discuss. *Insert eyeroll* All I said was great pics inside, didn’t care for the cover.

We all know they are a great couple. I just thought they could do better on the photo. No biggie.

      • MMadison says:

Robyn: It’s Meghan’s beautiful hair…that’s all. The picture in front of the window is my favorite as well…speaks volumes! @Krista, just LOL!

      • BabsORIG says:

@Krista, there is nothing in my post that says this or that are the only things/topics you can/can’t discuss on this site. If there is, kindly point it out to me. Please try to not jump down the throat of every person that dares make a comment about your post. You stated your opinion; others are allowed to have an opinion too. Peace.✌🏾✌🏾

      • Robyn says:

@mmadison No, it’s not just her hair (which I deeply covet) – I have my own opinion as I work for a print magazine and am involved in cover design. There are several composition issues with that photo and I think the window one would have been better for message and layout. That’s all.

      • Seraphina says:

@Margaret, thank you for the reality check. You are correct. As the quote begins – great minds discuss ideas. And since this is a gossip site, I hate to say this, color me petty but I LOVE the fact that people are losing their God forsaken minds over H&M making Time’s list AND A COVER. Not People, not Good Houskeeping but TIME.

      • GRUEY says:

@babsorig I agree with you. There is a tone in the nitpicking about this that implies somehow it lessens what the cover does for the two of them. Lol. Sorry everyone. This was a monumental flex for them.

Compare with people’s reaction to Kamala Harris’ horrific Vogue cover. People were mad ON HER BEHALF. Not so here. Hmmmm. Could that be because the photos absolutely did what they were meant to do: elevate and celebrate the Sussexes? What’s a little airbrushing when this cover threw down, essentially proclaiming these two the most influential people on the planet? Every single one of these dumb “but I work in the industryyyyyyy” whines strikes me as a attempt to claw back a little authority over them.

      • PrincessK says:

@Margaret….l totally agree with you and do not understand why so many people are going on and on dissecting the poses in the picture and discussing her ‘ beautiful thick hair’. All totally irrelevant to me. The important point is that they are in the top 100 influential people and not for the first time, despite the BM supported by other dark trying to destroy their reputation.

Harry and Meghan are icons and will grow stronger and stronger. Huge Congratulations 👏🏽

    • Eurydice says:

I really think part of it was “How do we get these sizes of people into this size photo onto that size cover.” I see that a lot on magazine covers.

And, in my imagination, I also like to think this was “See? You tried to erase Meghan. You tried to pretend she doesn’t exist. Well, here she is, front and center.”

      • Krista says:

@Eurydice that’s a great take…I think maybe the shot would have been better framed from the shoulders up? Still see PowerMeg while seeing Harry being supportive and loving with the hand on the shoulder?

      • superashes says:

I agree. I think they had a hard time finding a pose that wouldn’t display a height differential, that could communicate her on equal footing with him. If you think back to their last appearances before formally leaving the family, their clothing was designed to show them as in sync and a team, and I think that was what they were trying to go for here as well. Because of Harry’s dark clothing I think some people just simply can’t see that he is seated on a bench and think he is crouching. Maybe he could have been dressed a bit differently, in blue perhaps.

    • Susan says:

From a purely photographic perspective, I think if Harry’s lower body was better…identified/clarified it wouldn’t take away from the photo and create these discussions. Like, if he had on lighter colored pants or something to remove the odd short body perspective you get on him at first glance. He’s got broad shoulders but the awkward position they have him in and his dark clothing creates an optical illusion that isn’t good. I think if Harry had better positioning this wouldn’t be such the discussion (other than the standard royal side taking drama LOL).

      • Krista says:

@Susan thank you for describing exactly what I was thinking! LOL I couldn’t find the words to pin down why I felt the photo was awkward (so frustrating!). A lighter colour on Harry (even a charcoal or grey) might have balanced out the photo.

      • MsIam says:

If he had lighter colored pants on his legs would blend in with the banister he’s sitting on and he would look like a floating torso. Seems like that would be pretty obvious from a “photographic” perspective. The man is sitting and his wife is standing between his legs. I think that’s what really bothers the haters. Its a very intimate pose and I think its exactly what the photographer was going for.

      • Robyn says:

Exactly @Susan. This is a minor criticism of the composition of a *photo* of H&M that some of us don’t think does them the justice they deserve in this instance. It’s not trolling…my word.

      • windyriver says:

I wonder if they photoshopped out any existing light/texture on Harry’s paints to create a solid dark background for the lettering? Given the rest of the lighting in the picture, it seems like there would have originally been some more light on Harry’s pants, and so created less of an optically odd effect.

    • Surly Gale says:

I’m giggling cause am wondering where exactly is his other hand, eh?~ On her bottom, d’you think? One on her shoulder and the other….no one truly knows…is there a giggle abbreviation like LOL but less boisterous?

      • Krista says:

@Surly Gale *gasp* so not dignified! So not royal! (I’m being sarcastic, no one come at me for this….) I think that’s a cute thought. Let’s look hot and boss, but secretly I’m feeling you up! LOL

      • Over it says:

Oh his hand is definitely on her ass and I am all for it , he knows his wife is hot and he has the hots for her

    • likethedirection says:

@Krista I agree, for me it’s just that Harry looks a little awkward and uncomfortable. It kind of does look like he was Photoshopped in, which I highly doubt was the case! I appreciate the thought behind the pose but is there a shot where he doesn’t look constipated?? (And yes, for the record, I am a fan of the Sussexes!)

      • iconoclast59 says:

Many years ago, when I worked in a hospital, they asked me to pose with a diagnostic instrument for photos that would appear in our annual report. They wanted to feature the equipment as much as (if not more than) me, so they had me twisted up like a pretzel! It WAS awkward and uncomfortable, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for photographic models.

    • Selene says:

I agree with you Krista. I loved the styling and they look great, I mean, they’re beautiful people, but I didn’t like the picture either. I also wish they would’ve used less photoshop. The images look a bit like life drawings, not so much as photos.

    • Mary Mae says:

I don’t like the cover pose either. They squashed them together in the frame in a weird way. Also I could be wrong, but it seems to me Harry is awkwardly missing a leg the way he is positioned. Gotta love photoshop fails.

The rest of the photos seem lovely and I love that the haters are losing it.

    • molly says:

I understand why they posed that way and what they were trying to portray, but objectively, the other two photos are much better. Much more natural.

    • Monica says:

M&H get so much sh*t “out there” that I totally get why some of their fans here bristle at even mild criticism. Maybe when the media jackals find something else to howl about we can accept more balance, but that day will be long in coming. Meanwhile, I champion these two every chance I get.

      • Becks1 says:

I do think this plays a huge role. I’ve been called out on this site before for not being a “true fan” because I say something less than 100% positive about one of them. And I understand that because I do think the Sussex fans/supporters are on edge, so to speak. I know Kaiser has said this before – that she doesn’t like to criticize them even slightly because they get so much sh!t from all other directions. I think many of us are way more defensive of the Sussexes than we would be if they were just left alone. Like when the DM is running a story mocking this cover photo its hard to look at other criticism of it objectively.

      • Christine says:

I completely agree with you both. I cannot recall a public figure that I have ever felt this protective of, and though it defies logic, I do find myself getting tense and protective of Meghan. I think some of it might be the pandemic, being stuck at home has given me a lot more time to spend on fluff like royal gossip. The sheer volume of the negativity, and flat out misogyny and racism, stands out so much, and this is the only site where Meghan and Harry are celebrated regularly.

I do need to get a bit of a grip, ha!

    • Becks1 says:

@Krista you’re getting dragged for the comment but I think your comment was fine.

To me here is the difference in criticism re: H&M that I am okay with vs what I’m not:

“I don’t like the way they’re posed, something about the proportions seem off to me, I think I would have liked it better with his hand in X position” (basically what you said.)

Not okay: “I don’t like the way they’re posed, Harry is clinging to her like she’s his mommy.”

Theres clearly a difference there and I would hope most of us here are intelligent enough to discern the difference. If we’ve reached the point when someone cannot even have a differing opinion on how H&M are posed in a photograph, then we’ve kind of jumped the shark. Lost the plot. whatever.

      • Susan says:

Completely agree @Becks1. and for what it is worth, I always appreciate your opinions and while I think/know you are a sussexfan, you’re not someone that lashes out at the slightest criticism. Thank you for the rational comment!

      • Seraphina says:

        @Becks, 👏👏.

      • Solidgolddancer says:

        Thank you, @Becks

      • Green Desert says:

        Well said, @Becks1.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Becks1, I would like to add that we should be directing our opinions onto the staff/photographers at Time who created these photos. They directed where Meghan and Harry should stand, their positions in the photographs and the final cuts. All of these factors were NOT at the direction of Harry and Meghan as they do NOT have the final say over what goes to print, which is my understanding with regards to photographers and their “vision”.

What we should ALL be celebrating is the fact that Harry and Meghan have been chosen as Time’s Top 100!!! This is what we should be celebrating!!! Harry and Meghan are being recognized for their their hard work, dedication and compassion to service to all. When any unfortunate circumstance happens to people who are already in need, as Andres stated, they get their boots on the ground running!! We are going to see Harry and Meghan continue to be champions for those who desperately need it the most!! For this, I am so excited that they have been recognized for their work and it’s important!!!

      • Becks1 says:

@BothSidesNow – yes, of course that’s where the criticism should go, but I don’t think saying “I don’t like how they’re posed” translates to “Harry and Meghan messed up.” It’s just a comment on a photo. But that is where I think the wording of the criticism becomes crucial. When people say things like “harry is hiding behind Meghan” that to me is a criticism of the couple and its sexist and a whole bunch of other things.

I mean what’s funny at this point is that Krista said her opinion, if people had just moved on we wouldn’t have this ongoing comment chain about it and this huge debate and we COULD focus on the actual achievement here.

At the same time, this is a celebrity gossip site, and we are always going to discuss the fashion, the hairstyles, etc. If we’re just talking about serious things all the time it’s not going to be as fun lol.

      • Lorelei says:

@Becks THANK YOU! As you know I completely agree with you; it really ends up affecting the conversations we’re able to have here. Krista, I don’t think you said or did anything wrong whatsoever, and can tell from your comments that you genuinely like Meghan, so I don’t know why anyone would feel that they had the right to tell you what you should or should not have said in your own comment. I feel exactly the same way you do, just how Betsy and then Becks and some others described it, and totally understand why you prefaced it that way.

We’ve been made to feel like we have to preface our comments that way!! People who are totally fans of Meghan and of the Sussexes together, and have been since day one (🙋🏻‍♀️) can’t even say something incredibly mild, like “Meghan’s writing is a bit too flowery for my taste” or “I think this photo would have been better as the cover” (which isn’t even negative?!!) without getting jumped all over.

Yes, both Meghan and Harry have taken a ridiculously unfair beating in the press for years now, and we all hate it and think it’s unjust and disgusting…but we’re on what’s well-known to be a pro-Sussex site, with lots of long-term commenters, and over time, we get to know where people stand, so imo we should be able to talk honestly at this point. I mean, I know that Becks loves Meghan, so if one day Becks said something like “I’m really not crazy about that dress” or “I don’t love their pose in this photo,” I wouldn’t freak the fck out and feel compelled to reprimand her or tell her she must not be a “real” fan FGS. I’d take it for exactly what it was—her opinion on that one particular thing. But for some reason, there are a lot of people who seem to take even minor, harmless comments about H&M very personally, and act as if it’s their duty to “defend” the Sussexes online at all times, no matter how well-intentioned the poster is. Honestly, it gets obnoxious after a while.

(Obviously, if someone shows up and pulls the “I❤️M, but…” and then goes on to say awful, racist things about her, that’s completely different. But in my experience, we don’t get too many trolls like that on CB — especially compared to other sites — and since we don’t abide their racist crap here, they don’t tend to stick around long. Which is exactly why we’re here!)

        JMO

ETA: @Becks, I agree in particular with your last sentence…we’re on a site like this to escape from real world horrors and have fun discussing lighter stories. We should be able to talk about stuff like hair and poses in photos without worrying about people getting all offended. It’s a gossip site ffs!

    • JesusChrist says:

For real. The cover photo is also kinda boring and I don’t really think either look great. The other photos are fantastic! I think Harry sitting with arms crossed would’ve looked great and we would have gotten some bicep action

    • TeamAwesome says:

You know what, I too am a Sussex stan, and I think the cover’s staging isn’t great and the color saturation/ photo editing style isn’t to my taste either. That’s on the editorial staff and the photographer. Doesn’t mean I can’t recognize that as individuals they look amazing on this cover.

    • Nic919 says:

Yesterday there were people posting “I’m a big Sussex fan” and then saying something incredibly sexist. That’s not the case here.

      • Becks1 says:

@Nic yes and I think that’s why AmyBee up above said that Krista didn’t need to clarify that. A lot of times when people say “I’m a big Meghan fan BUT” I kind of hold my breath bc I know what’s going to come next is going to be a doozy. but not here.

    • Ginger says:

The photographer said “this photo is supposed to capture their powerful dynamic as a equal partners” So, this pose was deliberate.

    • Jules says:

@Krista, I agree with you. Megan is gorgeous and so photogenic, but this is not her best look, and their pose looks awkward to me. Some of the comments to your post are insane, it’s why I don’t bother reading most Sussex or Cambridge posts.

      • SMS says:

I agree with you and for a supposedly feminist website there’s a lot of negativity directly at women who do not meet with the group’s approval.

      • Jules says:

@SMS, yes it’s the performative woke doing backbends to make their point

    • MMadison says:

@Jaded: There is a phrase in the south that is the most polite thing we can say when it’s time to end a discussion….bless your heart

    • Annie says:

      @Krista
I agree. The cover isn’t great. That one of them in olive green is gorgeous (standing)

The cover I immediately thought of wax figurine like at those Madame Tussaud’s for Harry. Meghan looked kicka** in the cover. Maybe it’s the background/him in dark but it just seemed off.

    • razzles says:

Publications usually opt for the “safe”/ incredibly generic image to put on the cover. I guess they worry if they pic cover image with ANY kind of editorial value, they’ll offend or confuse more grocery/airport/newstand grabbers than their total subscription base. This happens in nearly every damn issue of every damn fashion and most periodicals… for decades. It happens to males too– for instance, when Time put Chris Evans on the cover for his political thingy.

    • Sarah says:

I agree; I love the other photos but not the cover.

    • Jane says:

I completely agree with you! I don’t understand why you are getting crap for critiquing a picture on the site CELEBITCHY (which I love, btw.)
I think the cover is great picture of Megan looking spectacular and would be perfect if she was alone. Harry wearing dark colors and sitting behind Megan makes them appear out of proportion. And yes, it does look like he’s her hairdresser–I really can’t unsee it!!

  3. Seraphina says:

The article led to some salty bitter tears here too. I can only imagine how much salt was wept in the UK.
And the reason body language experts were hired was so that the audience that hates them so much could feel better about their hate if experts could add validation to their nastiness.

    • Haylie says:

Sure did. And those same salty souls are repeating their foolishness in this post too.

    • Sofia says:

Yup. It was one thing to not like the cover but it was another for people to go they brought and paid for it, she looks boxy and Harry looks like a child behind her (which is pretty misogynistic)

      • Krista says:

@Sofia they really like infantilizing Harry, don’t they? Like the man has no brain or agency to think for himself. They just can’t fathom that the life he led wasn’t the life he wanted, so he changed it to protect his wife and children.

      • Seraphina says:

@Sophia, the bought and paid for comments blew my mind. It’s the same as diminishing a woman’s achievements in the office due to what she wears and the like. That’s when you can tell they are haters. It’s Time magazine no less. And they were adamant that nonprofits run that way. Mind blown.

      • Sofia says:

@Seraphina: Honestly the comments weren’t that surprising to me because the poster was saying the other day how Meghan was an “actress who dabbles in charity work” and how she has “wealthy woman causes”

      • Ginger says:

Kate’s “fans” were writing to Time saying they are cancelling their subscriptions and how upset they are that Harry and Meghan are on the list and not Kate lol Like these people have a subscription to Time magazine. Apparently, Kate does more work than Harry and Meghan, even though she has been MIA for months.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Ginger, I imagine that Ma Meddleton made some play to encourage folks to call Time to cancel their subscription for not “honoring” KKKeen, as if she is doing anything except shopping, seeing her plastic surgeon and her hairdresser!! What important work for her…oh, and wanting another massive castle with hundreds of acres to call her own!!

      • Lorelei says:

@Ginger, seriously, Camb stans are threatening to cancel their TIME subscriptions? Lmfao, no way do they have subscriptions, and even if I loved Kate and considered myself her #1 fan, even I’d have to admit she’s not one of the most influential people in the world, for the love of god.

People have absolutely lost their MINDS.

      • Lorelei says:

@Sofia, in fairness to racist morons, I kind of understand why these people would assume this honor was “bought & paid for” by the Sussexes (which it obviously was not), because that’s how “journalism” works in THEIR warped worlds. It’s all, “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” — the invisible contract Harry referred to. Journalistic integrity is not a thing in their little bubbles. So it would probably never occur to them that there are still some reputable (fewer and fewer by the day, but luckily there are still some left🤞) publications that do not engage in bullsh!t like that.

It’s a foreign concept to them, since the Cambridges would never receive such positive, high-profile coverage, let alone an honor like this one, so they automatically assume anything this complimentary must be suspect and the logical conclusion is that H&M bought it, lol.

    • Becks1 says:

So many salty tears. So many breakdowns. It’s like every time Harry and Meghan remind them that they are not going to stay quiet the RRs have another breakdown.

      • Seraphina says:

You’d think W&K’s PR team could see the silver lining and say: See, not all of the BRF all lazy and work shy – just look at H&M. Now leave us to our gardening and chutney making.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

They truly thought the Sussexes were going to fade into obscurity and come back begging like others before them. But the good Lord said no. He’s kept them in work, elevated their influence and they are well paid and moisturised.

      • BeanieBean says:

‘Well paid and moisturized’. Love it!

    • Truthiness says:

Lmao, if they had to immediately turn to body experts, it sounds like they couldn’t come up with reasons to attack them. And you can’t say this this is going to hurt the Queen. These are two gems stolen away from the royals and they aren’t going back.

      • BeanieBean says:

Weirdly enough, ‘body experts’ & ‘body language experts’ & ‘lip readers’ are standard ‘experts’ for the British tabs. They’ve been ‘consulting’ these types for decades.

    • Gruey says:

I would like to think that an entire nation isn’t collectively gnashing their teeth today…that this is mostly an illusion created by Murdoch, just as the brief obsession with Dr. Seuss was here. It’s just that there’s not quite as obvious a constant hate target here in the States right now—Hillary was, Obama and Michelle, maybe AOC is the easy hate target now?

Anyway, I still see evil Kleptocratic, global mafia forces behind all this. Murdoch is very closely aligned with Putin. His ex wife introduced the Kushners ffs. That’s who this is all ultimately serving

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

Enough salt was produced to put the sea to shame. I am loving the melt downs. The engagement and total neglect of the keens shenanigans gave me joy.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ Seraphina, at least Scobie put some water on their ridiculous “body language experts” in their place!! Anything to shit down the inhabitants of White Salty Racist Island!!!

    • Haylie says:

No Seraphina. I was agreeing with your comment. Especially because many concern trolls popped up here and proved your point.

  4. Osty says:

Those pics were amazing , we were well fed yesterday and the tears of the jealous haters were a plus. Harry and Meghan are winning and it hurt them
Someone on Twitter said they were world influential couple while the keens were village champions and I haven’t recovered from the laughter 😀😀😀😀

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

That is the perfect description. Despite a 2 and a half month absence first day back for the keen one and she walks into this? They even brought out the children but nope, it didn’t work. Who made the decision for her to start back on Harry’s birthday? Do they never learn? You can’t compete where you don’t compare. Some people are global, some are just local. LOL

      • UnionSnack says:

Yassssssss! Katie keen thought she can steal the show in Harry’s birthday. I wish I could be a fly at the wall of KP to see her rage when she knew about the Time cover!

    • Lorelei says:

@Osty, the level of success the Sussexes have achieved is beyond the BRF’s worst nightmare, and William probably keeps hoping he’ll wake up.

Can you imagine how much shock they still must be in, given how they thought the Sussexes would do on their own in the US, compared to how it’s actually turned out? They must be kicking themselves every moment of every day. Imagine William seeing that TIME cover for the first time (😂) — “incandescent” isn’t even a strong enough word to capture the rage that probably filled him immediately.

They would have made veeeeery different decisions if they’d had even a shred of fear that Harry and Meghan would be so well-received and so popular. But they were SO secure in their belief that the rest of the world saw the Sussexes the same way they did, so here we are.

It’s so enjoyable watching them live out the consequences of their petty smear campaign.

  5. Pao says:

I doubt the clothes they wore actually belong to their personal wardrobe. Don’t these things get loaned by the designer usually? And then returned once the shoot is over?

    • Becks1 says:

I do think that is pretty common – that these items were loaned – but I can also see Meghan buying these items as they are very much her style and are really good classic pieces to invest in, so maybe a little of borrowing, a little of buying.

      • Amy Bee says:

@Becks: I’m sure that was some discussion with the stylists before hand about the type of clothes Meghan likes to wear so that they can get a sense of how to style her on the day of shoot. So it’s quite possible that the stylists brought those clothes with them.

      • Seraphina says:

I would LOVE to get my hands on those items – even as hand me downs. She has impeccable style sense.

      • L4frimaire says:

Those pleated pants don’t look like Meghan’s usual style but I like how they’re styled for these photos. The colors look good on them.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ L4frimaire, I adore her slacks as well, but I can’t do pleats. I have to have all of my slacks that have pleats altered, as they look awful on me, and I have no idea. But I would buy those in a second and have them altered. In fact, I loved her entire color scheme with the green, that shade is gorgeous!! I absolutely love it!! So after I saw the pictures and decided which ones to search for, I went into my closet to dress and I have 3 slacks, 2 blazers and 6 blouses/sweaters in this color. But I like hers!!!!

    • MsIam says:

Harry should definitely keep that green suit! And I’m not usually a fan of green but that looks hot. But I agree, they usually bring in a rack of clothing for them to try on for the shoot. I remember reading about celebrity “at home” photo shoots and how stylists bring in lamps and other accessories or furniture to jazz up the place for photos, lol. Its not even their normal everyday stuff in a lot of cases.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

I agree he definitely should. The green really suits him and makes a change from his grey suit. I do need to see his shoes though 🙂

      • Robyn says:

He definitely should! Whew, he is wearing the shit out of it.

  6. Erica says:

I thought Diana’s Cartier watch had a black strap, not a gold one.

    • Jan says:

      She owned both.

    • Becks1 says:

I don’t know if its possible to switch out straps, but Meghan definitely has Diana’s Cartier watch. I forget which is which – Meghan bought herself a cartier tank watch – one is all gold and one is two-toned, so when Meghan was seeing wearing the one that wasn’t the one she bought herself, people figured it was Diana’s.

(not sure if that makes sense lol. I think M bought herself a two-toned watch, and then was seen wearing one that was all gold, so people assumed it was Diana’s, not sure that has ever been confirmed. But I could be mixing up the metals.)

    • Amy Bee says:

@Erica: Diana had two Carrier watches. One with a black leather strap and this gold one. Meghan’s definitely wearing Diana’s watch. Meghan’s own Carrier watch is two toned silver and gold

    • Betsy says:

Watch straps can be switched out.

      • Lorelei says:

They also added the cost of Meghan’s engagement ring into the total, which is absolute BS. (First of all, they have absolutely no way of knowing how much Harry spent on it, and in any case, I’d argue it’s priceless since it contained some diamonds once owned by Diana. But that’s not even the point.)

The pinky rings *seem* (and this is just my speculation) like pieces that might have been gifts from a girlfriend? And if Meghan bought them herself, she HAS EVERY RIGHT TO SPEND HER OWN MONEY ANY WAY SHE WANTS TO. SHE EARNED IT. Why are they still putting together these asinine graphics with all of the prices when the Sussexes have been financially independent for, what, more than a year now? The rest of the family members are literal welfare recipients dressed up in stolen jewels, yet the DM’s priority is to list the cost of everything Meghan wore. The joke is on them because Meghan is generally savvy enough to wear at least one piece by a woman-owned, sustainable business…I guess she knows they’re going to track down every damn thing on her, she may as well give a deserving small business owner the publicity.

I’m too lazy to check, but I’m pretty sure they never included the price of Diana’s ring when they tally up Kate’s spending. (When was the last time they even tallied up Kate’s spending at all?!)

It’s the hypocrisy that’s so infuriating. I know we’re pretty much used to it by now that there’s no point in bitching about it, but it still has the power to irritate me when they blatantly massage the numbers like this.

      • Debbie says:

Lorelei: regarding the BM (once again) adding the cost of Meghan’s engagement ring, while not really knowing ho much Harry paid for it… Of course they did. However, not knowing the cost never stopped them from guessing before. All they do it 1) take the square root of the number of bathrooms in the “Montecito mansion” 2) add the amount of lost revenue since M&H left England, then 3) divide that by Planck’s Constant, and Boom! you’ve got the cost of one engagement ring.

      • Debbie says:

      • Lorelei says:

@Debbie, lmao, you’re right. I’d momentarily forgotten that if the family knows something (in this case, how much Harry paid to have the ring designed), then of course the Fail does, too. The family is their largest source!

  7. Em says:

HAHAHAHAHA THEY ARE SO DESPERATE TO MAKE THEIR SMEAR CAMPAIGN STICK BUT IT NEVER WILL.

    • fluffy_bunny says:

The Sussexes are teflon. Nothing will ever stick to them in regards to the BM and BRF trying to smear them.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

The smear campaign actually helps them a lot at this point. It’s called marketing without spending a penny. Haters are too daft to realise this.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ Em, yes!! White Salty Racist Island is bringing them hordes of FREE publicity!! Suck on that, f#ckers…..

  8. MY3CENTS says:

Well you could have had a bad bitch…
Now you’re just stuck with baldemort.
Hope those salty tears don’t sting too much.

    • MMadison says:

The minute the Times article was posted the entire Salty Island forgot everything including COVID. They live for Harry and Meghan…PERIOD

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

I concur. We have a useless government in power, a stupid cabinet reshuffle, empty supermarkets, raging COVID, a senior royal in court and another one facing corruption allegations but no, Harry and Meghan! SMDH.

      • Annetommy says:

There are three countries on the island of Britain. I find that people in Scotland, at least where I live, are in generally pretty indifferent to the royals. This is particularly true of younger people, who might see them as celebs but don’t tend to follow their doings with avid interest. We read different papers too. So don’t paint us all with the same brush.

  9. Sandy says:

If it had been baldy and his useless wife on the cover : “wow, Time is a beacon of amazing journalism! Look now even our American friends love and respect our royalty. They love each other so much, look at baldy standing within 2 meters of her!”

But in this case… : “wow, Time 100 is a terrible gossip toiletpaper rag that no one reads. They must have paid to get on this cover. Look at how Harry is a cowering dog next to his master. He clearly hates her. Why is anyone even caring?”

I’m pretty pleased they made the cover. I don’t necessarily agree they are top 100, but they ARE a big deal and the fact that baldemort, insecure kate and the rest of the horrid pack have to read and see this cover is sooooooooooo satisfying. I can just imagine the tantrums, hahaha. I bet it ruined their day for a change! 😂

  10. Beenie says:

Hello from the UK! 👋 it’s true, we are losing our collective minds about this photoshoot… and with good reason!

Did you see how Meghan posed with confidence?! Ghastly. And how Harry’s hand was on her shoulder?, which my sources say basically means she thinks she’s a prince now and has forced Harry to be her commoner servant – just like we always suspected!

Also, something something look at all the jewellery that biracial woman is wearing! Sure, much of it was gifted to her by Harry, but she probably still stole it/this was the only reason why she got married in the first place/she’s so rich and out of touch!

And the bathrooms, my pearls, the bathrooms! Why do they need so many loos?! What are they using them for…. plotting the takeover of Harry’s nan, probably!!

Why can’t we just go back to the good old days of civility and propriety and… hey do you guys hear that whistle, too?

    • Harla says:

Hi Bernie! I’m running over with the smelling salts to save you from your swoon, clutch those pearls a bit tighter!

    • Becks1 says:

Love it Beenie!!!! Hope you recover from your swoon fast!

    • truthSF says:

      Good one Beenie!!🤭😂😂🤣🤣

    • windyriver says:

What’s funny, just because it’s so predictably DM purposely trying to mislead, is they claim Meghan is wearing $384K worth of jewelry – but $350K of that is supposedly the cost of her engagement ring. The other items, even Diana’s watch (quoted at $23,000) are comparatively modest in cost – but that’s not as good a headline.

      • Lady D says:

The DM is also trying real, real hard to connect her pinkie ring to Middle East diamonds. It’s not getting a lot of traction based on comment counts.

    • Persephone says:

I laughed so hard at this! 😂😂

      • Lorelei says:

Between Beenie and Lady D, I’m in stitches over here 😭 This insomniac in New York thanks you for the laughs!

    • Eurydice says:

Oh, too, too funny. Yes, indeed – look over there at that abomination across the pond! Don’t look here, where the High Court has agreed to serve papers on Andrew. *a different kind of whistling*

    • VS says:

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL….bravo; Love your comment and thank so much for the laugh

    • Nic919 says:

The Telegraph putting equal partners in quotes as if they are laughing at the concept was pretty disturbing to read. It implies they don’t see married couples in that family as equals to each other. I know the Telegraph is called the Torygraph, but they were as bad as a tabloids with that comment.

    • BothSidesNow says:

Thank you @ Beenie thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing us your glorious coverage of the Salty folks having an epic meltdown and temper tantrum, though I can think of someone who is especially having one too, or two people that happen to be married!

We love you and all of you Brits that chose to stand up for those who have been mistreated. We know that not all Brits are nasty, and we applaud your insight and collective joy in their constant “pearl clutching” moments!!

    • Christine says:

      Thank you for the laugh!

  11. mellie says:

My God people are absolutely insane, they looked great and who cares how they stood for these pictures??? My husband is taller so he typically stands slightly behinds me in photos, what does that say about us, uh, that he is f#$king taller! (but yeah, I wear the pants in the family too mother f#$kers!)….hahaha. (kidding, sort of!)

    • JanetDR says:

Haha! Same @mellie! I am a foot shorter. I used a selfie for our Christmas card this year and it was hard to get his whole head in the frame 😂

  12. AVEA says:

They mentioned stylists for this shoot, so wouldn’t be surprised if they were loaners, and they don’t pay for the jewelry every year so they are just bitching for the sake of bitching. Why do these people even care? They should focus on their lazy button wonder duo and the pedo they pick up the tab for

  13. Iris says:

I think they both look amazing (they’re both very good looking people, so it’s not hard!) but I still think the placement in that main photo is odd. I think the issue is that Harry looks like he’s been badly photoshopped in. The photo of them in coordinating olive outfits would have been a better choice, imo

  14. Amy Bee says:

The fashion blogs have been unable to ID Meghan’s clothes. One of the blogs has suggested the Row but it’s not confirmed. Those blogs have to be pissed that they invested so much time and money into their blogs only for Meghan to leave the Royal Family. I know they’re having a hard time because the Telegraph complained one time that Meghan was wearing clothes that they couldn’t ID and put affiliate links to. I’m guessing that the stylists brought the clothes with them for the photoshoot. As for the salt, yesterday was great. I saw one royalist say that Kate would never do this, forgetting that she did a 7 page spread for British Vogue. Harry and Meghan deserve to be on this list just for the meltdowns in the UK.

  15. mariahlee says:

It has to be annoying how much H&M are embraced by American media and how they just refuse to go away. All the time, energy, and effort put into destroying them has only made them more iconic, and that’s true regardless if people love or hate them. I think what it comes down to is that they’re likeable, good looking, and genuinely decent people. If they were even half as bad as the BM portray them as (they could easily be so obnoxious and harmful with their platforms), as many people wouldn’t celebrate them.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Mariahlee: The people at the Daily Mail have admitted that they don’t understand why Meghan and Harry remain so popular in the US.

      • BayTampaBay says:

        Do you have a link????

      • Amy Bee says:

@baytampabay: I don’t. It was said in one of their Palace confidential videos.

      • BayTampaBay says:

        @Amy Bee – THANKS!

      • Becks1 says:

What’s funny about that to me is that I think they’re still doing okay in the UK, even with the never-ending smear campaign. People in the UK are still watching them when they’re on TV in any way shape or form. They’re still defending Meghan against Piers Morgan. Their patronages (current and former) still love them. I think if they went back and made an appearance for anything besides the Queen’s jubilee they would be greeted with cheers. They’re not the most hated couple in the world, as much as the UK press may try to make them such.

(I said for anything besides the jubilee because I think the crowd for those events will be super royalists)

  16. Claire says:

Admittedly I am not an expert on photoshop, but where are people getting the idea that the cover image was altered? Serious question. I think they both look like themselves, and terrific. And I zoomed in!

    • North of Boston says:

I think part of the issue is people didn’t realize initially that he’s sitting, so they thought his position, posture looked odd.

There was something that struck me as odd about the cover photo, and looking at it fresh this morning I figured it out. It’s the light source(s). The photographer must have been using multiple light sources because there are areas that are well lit that would have had some shadowing if there were a light source from just one direction. (His hand is one to my eyes).

I can see why it was done for the cover, as it really makes the image “pop”.

They look great though! And I really love the pics that accompanied the article.

      • Claire says:

Oh hahaha! Would never occur to me about height differential; of course he’s sitting down, he’s considerably taller than she is. The rest is the photographer’s choice I would imagine… and it did pop to me, so mission accomplished.

  17. OriginalLala says:

omg, what nonsense! The cover shot isn’t my favorite of them, but the others are awesome – they both look great, and as a huge fan of dark green I swooned at the fashion choices, the fabrics look so sumptuous and soft!

    • SenseOfTheAbsurd says:

Yes, all those subtle dappled greens are so gorgeous layered together, I absolutely love it. To the point that I just bought a cone of heathered shetland wool/cashmere blend in all those colours, called Old Forest. Going to make a fitted 1940s-style cardigan.

  18. Merricat says:

I hope those tears burn like fire in the not-just-racist-but-also-sexist royalist Britain.
I don’t think I’ll ever stop laughing over this. What a colossal mistake the Windsors made. They deserve every drop of karma.

  19. Jais says:

I’m feeling her pants in both colors. They give very Katharine Hepburn vibes. Her hair is ridiculous, so gorgeous.

  20. Ainsley7 says:

Yeah, the DM doesn’t seem to realize that they don’t have to follow the rules when it comes to free/loaned clothing. I hope these clothes were loaners though. The pleated pants are doing Meghan no favors and hope she isn’t super attached to them. Otherwise, they both look incredible in the photos. I’m confused about one thing though. Does Meghan now wear Diana’s watch or is it still the watch she bought herself? They were both Cartier tank watches. I’m not sure what the differences were.

    • Harla says:

Meghan’s Tank watch is two-tone and Diana’s is gold.

      • Ainsley7 says:

Thanks for clearing that up. I tried googling it, but there still seemed to be some confusion because Diana seems to have had two or one with switchable straps. It’s nice that Meghan is wearing Diana’s watch. I hope she is still planning to handing the watch she bought down to Lili. It would be a really nice college graduation gift or maybe upon getting her first job or something.

    • ADS says:

Personally I think those trousers are super flattering on Meghan. Her post baby curves look good. Lots of people pay good money to obtain the shapely booty that the good lord chose to bless her with.

    • Jais says:

Lol @ainsley7. Just said upthread that I love the pleated pants cuz they have Katharine Hepburn vibes. Idk? I really love that look, esp. with the turtleneck, so I guess people just have different style opinions. What favors were the pants supposed to give her? I guess they’re not inherently slimming but I don’t think that’s their point or purpose if that makes sense. Genuinely curious as someone who loves pleated pants.

      • Ainsley7 says:

It’s not so much that pleated pants are bad. It’s just that they don’t flatter everyone. Meghan is short waisted. So, there isn’t as much room between her chest and her waist. So, with all the added volume of the pleats, it just makes her look a lot heavier than she and a little disproportionate. On someone with a longer torso, there’s more room and the pants don’t have the same effect. At the end of the day fashion is 100% subjective. So, we are both right lol

    • Lorelei says:

@Ainsley: oh, right, those BRF rules about loaners and discounts and freebies, which Kate (and the rest of them) *definitely* respected and abided by. For sure.

  21. Jane says:

Cost breakdowns are standard clickbait articles for the Daily Heil – they do one on Nigella Lawson’s kitchen paraphernalia every time she starts a new tv show, for example. On the one hand, a pitiful excuse for journalism so it’s not surprising they do it, on the other, these sorts of pieces require more effort and research than the usual hit pieces, unless the writer simply went to What Meghan Wore or a similar site. It’s so weird, on the one hand there’s this kind of naked envy of wealthy people and their possessions and the encouragement to covet them and try and save up to buy them or a similar cheaper version, on the other there’s this frothing outrage about materialism and consumerism. Totally hypocritical.

I love Meghan’s style, it’s much closer to my preferences than most other high profile women, and I always look forward to seeing what she’ll wear next. And I have no problem with her wearing expensive cloths and jewellery – she was a millionaire even before she was a duchess and no doubt gets lots of freebies and discounts and yet she frequently rewears things – as it’s easy enough to find cheaper versions. It bothers me more when wealthy celebrities pretend that they’re just like me and they buy all their stuff on the high street or charity shops or wait for sales or whatever. It’s ridiculously patronising.

    • Naomi says:

      I can’t recall a cost breakdown for Kate’s jewelry. Wasn’t one yesterday.

    • Courtney B says:

I remember right after the wedding when I broke down the REAL costs of her outfits when the DM was running one of their BS stories and royal Facebook groups were in a meltdown . Of course, this was before I realized Meghan haters were unhinged and didn’t care about facts. But they gave a total, like gbp150,000. But they would count a repeat twice so say a gbp100 sweater was now gbp200 in the total. And then they counted a diamond bracelet gifted by the queen, earrings, etc. Like OF COURSE that jacks up the total! These were like half the total or more. And it wasn’t something Meghan spent money on. And they counted clothes/accessories she had before marrying. But they counted on no one reading and adding things up. Just seeing the screaming headline.

  22. TeamAwesome says:

The cover pose could be seen as a call back to how his parents were posed for their engagement announcement photos, the one where Charles is on the step above to be seen as taller than Diana.

All of the photos for this issue have this weird hypersaturated photoshop look to them which is not my fave, but you can’t deny Team Sussex looks GOOD.

  23. Jo73c says:

Yeah, that cover shot was specifically designed to wind up the British hacks, and it worked a treat!

  24. L84Tea says:

They gripe about the cost of everything because it’s part of their denial. I believe they enjoy griping about costs because that’s what they would be doing if H&M were still working royals, and they so so badly want H&M to still be working royals.

    • Lorelei says:

They absolutely CANNOT STAND seeing the biracial duchess wearing nice jewelry, especially if a piece is something that was once Diana’s. The outrage causes their tiny brains to malfunction. They cannot outright say this is the reason, so they make it about the ££ — even though the Sussexes are earning their own. They are one unhinged lot.

  25. Jan says:

BM is in full meltdown mode, about H&M as usual. Nothing says power, that even after leaving Shutter Island, they’re still the main topic, when they have a kiddie fiddler and a cash for honors/citizenship Prince under their noses.
Why do people post comments saying they don’t care, yes you do, otherwise you would ignore the post.
Another one is, I thought they wanted privacy, no they wanted the BM to stop lying about them, privacy does not mean living in a cave.

  26. Over it says:

All I see is a proud husband who has his wife back and isn’t afraid to show the world that she is his true queen and equal to him in everything . Power couple who pay their own bills because they are those bad bitches and the salt section of Britain just jealousssssssssssss.

  27. NCWoman says:

Harry must be a pretty amazing guy (not perfect but who is). Usually the wealthy white guys who are anti-racist are awash in toxic masculinity and misogyny, or conversely, they’re (white) feminists but racists. It’s hard to find one of those guys who is secure enough to work to improve in both areas and not only not push down on some group of people but to directly take on and subvert traditions, including traditional male/female poses.

  28. ABritGuest says:

I think the photoshop/airbrushing in the cover shot ruined it- much prefer the photo of them standing by a window. They ate in that photo.

Someone said the cover photo looked like Harry was her hairdresser after she had a blowout and I can’t not see it now lol. Or how it reminds them of twilight. Which is why I don’t like that photo despite Meghan especially stunting in it.

But the conversations it’s provoking claiming Harry is emasculated (from the people who were praising Philip for walking behind the queen a few months ago) is fascinating & says a lot about misogyny.

Must suck for the tabloids after their years long smear campaign to see them in this list of 100 most influential people. Their future queen was out yesterday & didn’t even merit a mention on the morning shows or any front pages. Again the people in the palace who greenlit the smear campaign deserve awards for clownery

    • Edna says:

“Their future queen was out yesterday & didn’t even merit a mention on the morning shows or any front pages. Again the people in the palace who greenlit the smear campaign deserve awards for clownery”
      😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂🤣😂🤣 Priceless

    • Sure says:

Were H & M photographed separately and then photoshopped together for the cover? I keep thinking that’s why their positioning looks off. Also H’s photoshopped hair in the tree pic is just amateurish work by the photographer. I think he and the Time execs responsible for this project did M & H a disservice.

      • Naomi says:

@Sure, putting a question mark after nasty comments that allege massive photoshopping doesn’t make them less nasty. In fact, that’s a common DM technique. So is the concern “disservice” trolling at the end. We are only criticizing because we care! LOL.

      • Sure says:

@Naomi, my comments weren’t aimed at H & M but rather at the photographer and the team that put the project together. To my mind, given that they are media professionals, they chose a cover photo which they would have had to have known would whip up controversy for M & H. Exposing H & M to such controversy was a disservice to their good faith participation in the project. I’m starting to wonder whether this cover wasn’t a set up to counteract the mass positive attention sparked by Samir Hussein’s walking in the rain photo.

    • Eurydice says:

Well, no one is stopping the tabloids from writing about their precious future, future queen. They could write about her if they wanted. The fact that she’s boring and has nothing to say isn’t really an excuse because they make up stuff all the time.

  29. Dee says:

You’d think the Salty Isle would be used to seeing a powerful woman with her man beside her.

  30. line says:

For the cover photo is a message to the entire monarchical institution and to the Windsors. Harry tell them here is my wife.

She is strong, intelligent, charismatic and beautiful. And I am proud to be her husband and to support her. I will never abonned her , especially to come back to play William and Kate’s violent second.

In the case of Meghan and their telling them I was no longer waiting for my light for you. I am now free to be a great person again.

    • Emma says:

Yes! He is not perturbed and he is not threatened. He LOVES her strength and power. And she looks amazing!!!

It has a really autumnal, golden light. Like an oil painting or a Greek ikon.

TIME does photoshop all the time with cover images but I don’t think this is particularly egregious. It’s just … ikonic.

  31. MsIam says:

I always find it odd how the BM like to go after the Sussexes for the price of their clothing and Meghans jewelry. The royals , especially the queen and FFQ come decked out in enough jewelry and custom made clothing and shoes to support a family of five for a year on the regular. But lets get after Meghan for wearing her engagement ring ( which seems to cost more with every article) and her late mother-in-law’s jewelry which was purchased 30 or 40 years ago.

    • Becks1 says:

They never price out the Queen’s brooches, and you know none of those were cheap, just as a starting point.

      • Lorelei says:

@Becks, nor do they do it with the Queen’s 8,000-ish Hermès scarves. She has so many of them that I doubt anyone has a clue as to the value of the entire collection — and those are just her *riding scarves* ffs.

But sure, let’s keep harping on the number of bathrooms in the house that Harry and Meghan bought with their own money.

It’s easier to just ignore the fact that a considerable amount of taxpayer £ has been going to HERMÈS for like eight decades.

    • MF1 says:

On top of that, a lot of the RF’s jewels were looted and plundered from colonized regions. At least Megan came by her jewelry in an honest way.

  32. Catherine says:

The photo is stunning. I can remember when the Endeavour Fund photo came out there were people who claimed it was staged because it was so stunning. The baby announcement photo was picked apart. Last years Time photo was picked apart. The pose/photoshop conversation just feels hypercritical to me. And yes, everyone has the right to be critical. The Sussexes aren’t above that but sometimes it just feels like is there anything we can just enjoy for a minute before the microscopes come out. For me the significance of this is that they chose to pose for a cover for the first time because it was about their work. That’s what I love about this. And they paired it with the update to their website. Also, the fact that they are still being embraced by media entities like Time and that their partners like chef Andres have such glowing thing to say about them even though everything is being done to tarnish them is so important. It demonstrates that they are the real deal and people know and are ignoring the toxicity.

    • MsIam says:

Stunning is the word for that picture indeed! I would definitely ask for a copy to frame as a keepsake if it were me. You can feel the heat between the two of them.

    • ABritGuest says:

That’s a good point. It’s been a great week for them. Celebrating the warrior games athletes with First Lady Biden & the defense Secretary who were really effusive with their praise for Harry. Then in the Icon list for Time100 on Harry’s birthday with write up by a beloved philanthropist& unveiling an interview with the WTO head.

Despite what the palace, royal rota & their trolls are trying respected people want to work with them & therefore believe they are credible & not massive liars like the press have tried to portray them as. Winning!

  33. Layla says:

And so begins the annual salty island cry fest carnival, with performances from red-faced commentator clowns and the exclusive idiotic parade of haphazard royal engagements, endless PR and smear campaigns and most exclusive of all, the hide-and-seek game of one elusive peadophile 🙄

  34. Juniper says:

I’m seeing a lot of salty British comments that Harry looks like Meghan’s hairdresser showing her new do in the mirror after a hair appointment

    • Merricat says:

I really can’t get over how sexist these “British comments” are; it’s so telling.

    • Lorelei says:

@Juniper, I actually found that one funny, because once it was pointed out, I couldn’t unsee it. But that one was tame compared to the vitriol in most of the comments about it. The stylist one — I thought, at least — was legit just a very funny observation, and not mean-spirited, misogynistic nonsense like most of the others.

  35. SunRae says:

This is why I loved whoever was posting ‘LOL’ under posts yesterday. There’s never a moment to enjoy Harry and Meghan things because as soon as they drop THE NITPICKING. If it’s not Archie’s state of undress, it’s Harry’s weird pose or Meghan’s ‘boxy’ pants. I’m pretty sure they’ll do a Vogue cover one day and that’ll be a stylistic marvel but this is kind of a serious publication that maybe wasn’t over focused on the aesthetic perfection of the images. The pose was clearly deliberate and meant to send a message (these two don’t just do stuff) and I’m glad they’re able to leverage their notoriety in such as smart talking-point creating way. They are literally forcing us to elevate the conversation beyond (checks notes) PANTS.

A lot of the weirdness on this thread, evidenced by the immediate deviation from the topic of misogyny and the tantrums of an unscrupulous industry to further nitpicking is because they don’t want us to talk about how HARRY AND MEGHAN WON. Specifically, how irrelevant their remaining royals are in comparison.

    • JT says:

Yep. Harry and Meghan have won, they stay winning, and the royals continue to lose, which is why there is constant bitching and moaning about everything that H&M do. This hasn’t been more apparent than when you contrast H&M with what the royals have been through recently. It’s been weeks of Andrew headlines, Charles’ shady financial business, and the complete absence of the “faces of the modern monarchy” completely in the wind. Meanwhile the Sussexes are being touted as powerful and influential. I actually saw someone on Twitter say that it’s not fair that Harry and Meghan keep winning.

      • SunRae says:

There is so much frustration there isn’t there? It’s bizarre. You don’t get to decide anyone’s destiny in this life. That so many people feel personally affronted that their ill-wishes towards two complete strangers didn’t come to fruition makes me think we have a massive global mental health crisis on our hands.

Seriously. It’s not normal to think our dislike of someone should impact life trajectory. Nowhere in the world is that a thing.

    • notasugarhere says:

The weirdness appears to have come from all the brand new posters who showed up yesterday and today simply to attack these photos.

    • Lorelei says:

@Sunrae I think (?) it was Amy Bee, and I enjoyed it too. The people making insulting comments WANT to rile us up, so the dryly dismissive “LOL” replies were perfect. It denied them the engagement they wanted, and gave the (correct) impression that their comments aren’t even worth more than a bored LOL in response.

  36. Nicki says:

Meghan looks proud and unapologetic ans Harry looks like he’s supporting and protecting her. And the reaction by the tabloids — and Page Six in the U.S. was among the worst — is rage that H and M dare even exist. It’s kind of funny how easily triggered they all are.

  37. TabithaD says:

I’m in the UK and was just watching a lunchtime show where the panel (TV presenter, politician, retired sportsman, comedian, etc.) briefly discussed the question “did Harry and Meghan deserve to be on Time’s list”, and they unanimously said yes, citing reasons. One of the panel said “when they speak, people listen”. This was one of the main terrestrial channels.
So by no means everyone agrees with the British press on this. (And there are some dissenting voices in the press too, from time to time).

    • JT says:

And that is why they are nitpicking the photos and the price of their clothes. For one, they look amazing, but most importantly, Harry and Meghan deserve to be on this list regardless of what anyone says. People can attack their bathrooms but I don’t see anybody criticizing the work and that’s the main point of this whole profile.

  38. Margaret says:

    @ Catherine
Well said, I couldn’t have said it better. They are the real deal. The honour for the work they do, not the air brushing of a photo.

  39. Case says:

LOL I knew they’d whine about how they were posed, which I love. Harry feeling comfortable with Meghan taking the lead and standing broad-shouldered in front of him makes him MORE confident and secure in his relationship/masculinity to me, not less.

    • Christine says:

I could not agree with you more if I tried.

      • Lorelei says:

Me too, Christine! Elegant Bill would never agree to such a pose, when in reality, many women, like us, find it so attractive when a man treats his wife the way Harry does.

  40. Rapunzel says:

Referring to body language experts to dissect artificially posed photos is the essence of “desperate for something to complain about.”

  41. Cessily says:

All the photos I have seen so far look beautiful. Time picked the cover photo they wanted, the nitpicking is over the top. I’m just going to enjoy my copy and pray for the day when they are not picked apart for every accomplishment and initiative they have.

    • SunRae says:

Thank you. It’s ridiculous and unhinged at this point.

      • Cessily says:

@SunRae Read through the comments +1 to you.. hopefully we can enjoy the good press about their accomplishments and the beautiful photos. Fans have wanted to see Meghan for awhile on Twitter and she is gorgeous as always but considering she is a few months postpartum she is absolute perfection.

      • MMadison says:

Thank you both. Your comments are music to my ears. It’s like we can’t get a moment for Meghan anywhere. Thank you for being the voice of reason and so comforting after reading so many disappointing comments on this site.

    • Lorelei says:

I take some satisfaction from the fact that they had only the photos and poses to pick apart, because they certainly couldn’t acknowledge what an impressive honor it was that the Sussexes were included on that list. THAT is what was eating them up inside, so they took their wrath out by nitpicking every detail of the photos.

Hoping that no one would stop to ponder why their *actual* future king & queen would NEVER have even been in the running for something like this.

      • Cessily says:

Time 100 is a Huge honor.. I am celebrating with my copy and ignoring the rest. I have a feeling the Sussex’s will generating a lot of good legitimate press with their accomplishments it is going to be a pleasure to watch.

  42. colleen says:

When I initially saw the cover I KNEW they were going to have something to say about it on the Dusty Isle.

Predictably it was not how gorgeous the shoot was or how fabulous the styling is.

  43. Mich says:

I think the pose is pretty deliberate. She is wearing a “suffragette white” pantsuit and standing strong and proud. He is essentially saying he supports feminism in this pic.

    • Ginger says:

Agreed. I think the pose was deliberate. It defiantly gives those vibes. And Harry having his hand on her shoulder says that he has her back. Personally, I love this pose the best out of the three photos.

  44. aquarius64 says:

Is the Fail wondering why the Sussexes are getting love in the US? I believe Americans saw Oprah’s interview and concluded lessons were not learned from Diana. The BRF shieding Andrew from the FBI doesn’t help either. The BM’s credibility is out the window by doing the Windsors’ dirty work and weaponizing Meghan’s disgruntled greedy relatives.

    • Marivic says:

The Sussexes are not just getting the love in the US, they’re getting the love in the world. You’re right the Royal Family and the British media have not learned their lessons from Diana. They are out to draw blood from Meghan. She made them the laughing stock of the world. They will never stop until they kill her. But it’s a different time now from Diana’s. With digital media technology advancements, people of the world have seen through the evil workings of the British media ( with the imprimatur of the RF) in real time. The world can’t be fooled to believe in their narrative ever again. That’s why they’re all salty and madly enraged. Look at all of them out on TV frothing in the mouth spewing Meghan hate. But no matter what , the US and the world embrace Harry and Meghan and they can surely feel the love.

  45. Krystina says:

I love the look in their eyes the most. Two people who have weathered harsh battles together and come through it stronger than ever. That light that was missing while they were living in England is back, and I’m SO here for it!
*side note* Am I the only one who didn’t realize how blue Harry’s eyes were? I don’t know how I missed that before.

  46. TIFFANY says:

At this point, it is not even The Sussexes being beautiful and successful, it is the people damn near stroking out that does.

  47. ichooseme says:

I saw someone say it looks like Harry is a hairstylist describing what he did to Meghan’s layers. I can’t unsee it now. Love H&M, but that did make me laugh.

  48. Athena says:

I’m not a fan of that picture but Harry and Meghan are savvy and have a better understanding of optics than I do. So if they signed off this picture than they were okay with it. I’m sure Harry if he didn’t care for the pose during the photo shoot would have said something and if they didn’t like the picture Time would not have used it. His family and the British media tried to destroy this woman and he stood by her. The picture to me says Harry is standing by this woman, he’s supporting his wife, and Meghan is back to her strong, self assured self.

  49. Skittlebrau says:

Love them, hate the olive pleated pants.

    • Susan says:

Do you mean hers or his?? So I am an oldie but I kinda love/hate the return of baggy pants/pleated pants. Like, i don’t know if I can pull it off, but I am *so tired* of skinny jeans, jeggings/leggings/skinny pants. Despite what we have been sold in fashion for the last 10 years, they don’t look good on all of us. Signed, someone with chunky legs. LOL.

  50. Monica says:

I think the posing is perfect. Harry has had the focus on him all his life. He knows who he is and where he stands. And when Meghan came into his life, from the start he watched out for and tried to protect her. His proud, somewhat solicitous pose on the cover is just an extension of that. He hangs back a bit and says, “Here she is, world. Isn’t she wonderful?” 😍

  51. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

He’s not kneeling for frak’s sake. They act like he’s in worship mode. In fact, one could argue he’s resting on the ledge allowing his strong, beautiful wife to be front and center, and being her lean-to whenever she needs or desires.

  52. Gk says:

They look good, tanned, beautiful, the hair is great. Height difference is a challenge I think his arms around her and her arms resting on top would look warmer/ more intimate/ that they are a team. Their clothes are good. British press is going to incite an exodus of non heir royals to the US with this kind of coverage, making it sound easy, rich, a zillion bathrooms.

  53. teafortwo says:

I feel that it cannot be said enough that Meghan posed for this just a few weeks after giving birth, assuming these shots were done at least a month in advance of publication. I mean who among us would wish to be photographed just weeks after giving birth, no less in white, for a global audience of millions, knowing the ugliness that might come our way as a result?

To me that says that Meghan is even more fierce and courageous than I had even realized, and that’s saying something on top of how fierce and courageous I already know her to be.

As a couple it feels like they are rising to a level that few among us have seen. We Americans are so fortunate that they chose to live their next chapter here.

  54. Flying Fish says:

Baldi and and Unable must have had a fit when they saw these photos…I love it all!!!!!! Outshone once again.

  55. Marivic says:

It’s all over Twitter that British and Australian TV shows are ongoing in their assassination of the Sussexes’ successful and high-profile TIME magazine cover as one of the world’s 100 influential people. Wow! They’re having a heart attack. Good for you all. There is no acceptance among these people that the Sussexes did not flounder in their newfound life. Absolutely no acceptance that their future king and queen consort will never be prominently acknowledged as influential either by their own British subjects or the people of the world. They’re all in denial mode so they just endlessly rant inanities. Oh well whatever floats your boat. Sticks and stones may break Sussexes bones but words can never hurt them.
    Sussexes for the win!

  56. L4frimaire says:

It seems all the back and forth and nitpicking is only with the front cover pose, not the other photos in the spread. Part of it is that it is a very in your face direct photo. It’s unapologetic, with a direct confident gaze. They’re not really smiling, Meghan is front and center in a confident stance and Harry is beside her challenging the lens as well. It kind of reminds me of boxing photos, where the boxer is front and center and their coach is there supporting, and they’re both ready to fight. A lot of people don’t like this pose because they think the man, the royal man, should be dominant with his wife as the helpmate. I love it. I love that it bothers people, I love how direct they look, I love how it questions gender roles and why we need women to shrink. The photo is getting people talking and bringing out all the feels. A photo doesn’t have to be pretty, or perfectly composed, to make an impact. Kudos to the photographer.

  57. Same says:

I read that he looks like her hairdresser in the mirror telling her what he just did with her layers and now I can’t Unsee it.
They are both beautiful people but they did Harry dirty with that selection.

I know, I know … I’m supposed to love it.
    Do love the greens though.

  58. Mcmmom says:

Eh, I’m not crazy about it, but I like it slightly better once I realized he was sitting on a ledge. I want him to look equally strong because she *deserves* a full partner. I think it’s totally appropriate for her to be a little more front and center because he is a Prince and he’s lived his entire life in the spotlight – I like the notion that this is indeed her time to shine, but I want it to be clear that he is strong enough to have her back (not as a savior, but as a partner).

I am admittedly a Sussex Stan – but really because of her. I like Harry fine, but as a professional woman, I really admire what she stands for. If I were her friend, I would want to make sure she has a man who amplifies, not dims, her light. The picture *almost* gets to that, but not quite.

  59. Liz version 700 says:

I hope those clothes weren’t loaned because they look so flipping hot in their matching green. I love every picture and all eighty trillion dollars worth of the jewelry she was either gifted or bought herself! I hope this cover made the body language experts cry salty tears. I hope Charles was interrupted during a shady financial dealing to see that cover and I hope William and Kate are bawling their incandescence for all to hear. They have landed well on their feet in the US and we are better for having them here. As for the “he is cowering behind her crap.” She took so so SO many hits for daring to marry the man she loves…I love that she showed up standing strong with her man supporting her. They knew exactly what they were projecting. It was an elegantly crafted, richly bejeweled middle finger to all of the salty haters and it was glorious.

  60. Marquee Moon says:

H&M are slaying here! Happy Bday Harry and congratulations on the cover
To clarify as I work in the industry, all shoots of this level have a large team
The art director will work out a concept ( I feel like there was a conscious attempt here to make them equals on the cover) , art direction for the shoot, a mood board for the shoot will be sent to hair makeup stylists etc
Stylists pick out a bunch of pieces for the shoot which the talent will be shot in ( from showrooms which hold collections of designers current ranges for editorial purposes, these peices are returned to the showroom after the shoot)
On the day of the shoot a few different cover options will be taken, plus the additional shots for the story
The editorial team will chose the cover shot from the options in meetings after the shoot
The talent ( Harry and Megan )on the day will be directed how to pose by the photographer
    The covers are always photoshopped
The more high profile the talent , they will have some input but usually in cover shots the talent are told what to wear and how to pose etc and don’t have input into the final image
I personally think this is quite a nice cover as these sorts of covers go
It’s very easy to nitpick any cover if you look at any of them really closely, but I have seen so much worse and I think this one on the whole is quite good

  61. Likeyoucare says:

I just saw a man showing off his woman to the world.
Look at my warrior, you tried to kill her but she still standing strong and ready to fight.
And her hair is fabolous too.

  62. notasugarhere says:

Salty trolls out two days running. So much salt, so little time.

  63. Nuks says:

I love these two forever and will buy the mag today to support them, but something feels so awkward with this photo. It happens – but a good publicist should be able to help coordinate all the efforts. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

  64. Noor says:

The tabloids mentality .. thrash anything Meghan.

Only Newsweek got it right…Prince Harry and Meghan’s Time Cover is “a stab in the heart for Monarchy..”

  65. Meghan says:

I really like the shot of them both in olive green.

From I’ve heard from the UK they’re a bit more than tearful and salty. They’re downright enraged at the Sussexes for having the NERVE to be on the cover of Time. Talk about a hateful bunch of bitter-lings. lol. Does my heart good to hear them protest and whine.

  67. PrincessK says:

Most of the comments seem to be just focused on superficial matters about how the couple look and how they are standing.

My question is Ngozi Okonjo Iweala on the actual front cover of the magazine or Harry and Meghan? Or has Time put out several different covers for this edition?

  68. Joanna says:

I love the cover! It’s so symbolic to me of their lives. He lets her be who she is and he’s There to support her, not overshadowing her and letting everyone know he’s “the prince.” He’s secure enough to put himself in the background and let her shine. I feel like this is probably the opposite of William and Kate’s marriage.

  69. ChattyCath says:

Just a beautiful picture. Arresting (LOL)

  70. Pink says:

Late to the party here but LOL we on “Salt Island” really weren’t having a fit over this Trust me. In fact there’s a pretty funny meme doing the rounds about Harry looking like Meghan’s hairdresser showing her her new haircut, that’s it!

Okay, I wasn’t sure before but that cinches it, yeah, they’re trolls alright. And, unimaginative ones at that. If you spend 2 whole days looking at, and writing about, people living their lives on a different continent from you, then YOU DEAR are obsessed. And all this nattering about how great her hair looks (I agree) just confirms you are protesting too much. The Sussexes left you, get over it. Get a life.
