This position is located in located in the Traffic Services Unit in McLeansvilleThis position will be responsible for the supervision, management, and development activities of the signal technicians in Division 7 Traffic Operations.  This position will supervise technical repair and efficient operation of ITS devices, including Closed Loop System repairs and maintenance.  Work is performed without immediate supervision. This position will coordinate contractor activities and technician inspections. Investigate engineer and citizen requests and report a solution that will meet the MUTCD standards and NCDOT standard specifications. The Electronics Tech III will conduct performance reviews (NC VIP).  Prioritize activities of signal technician’s daily work.  Assist in 811 fiber locations using locating equipment and roadway drawings to mark buried fiber. This position will respond to emergency maintenance calls both during and after normal working hours. Must have the ability to train personnel on and operate a 24K signal bucket truck. Performs skilled work in the diagnosis of malfunctions in both microprocessor-based traffic signal controllers and cabinets to the module level.  Will assist in installation and inspection of all aspects of traffic signal installations. A high level of knowledge of the principles in applying safe and efficient practices in the installation, alternation, repair and maintenance of electrical, electro-mechanical, and ITS devices. Will manage inventory and operation of the signal warehouse, maintenance of electronic equipment and vehicles. Uses various electrical and electronic test equipment to troubleshoot malfunctioning traffic control equipment. Conducts research and development of new technologies. Responsible for diagnosis of malfunctions in traffic signal equipment, etc. Schedules and plans maintenance duties while working within the proposed budget restraints for this department and monitors expenditures within budgetary guidelines using SAP. Position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT traffic signal specification
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, traffic signals, intersection design, standard specifications and maintenance manuals associated with traffic signal equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to trouble shoot nonstandard traffic electronic equipment, or equipment with incomplete or missing documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision.


Additional Expectations:

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s license with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

 

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission
