Why this petition matters

Started by Liberty Firewall

In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, gun-control bills are being proposed as solutions to the problem with violence. None of these House bills and their companion Senate bills, however, will do anything to stop deadly crimes in Rhode Island. Instead they will only criminalize law abiding Rhode Islanders and infringe our Constitutional rights. These bills are in fact an attack on the liberty of law abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong. In the United States of America, we have a "presumption of innocence" under the law that is being ignored and if these bills should pass our rights will be violated. These bills are being pushed to advance "feel good" legislation that will deny our personal right to defend our lives and those of our families from violent criminals and the mentally ill who do not obey laws. That means those guns that are banned will only be denied to lawful citizens but the ciriminals will still have them. These anti-freedom bills advance an agenda that will erode the rights of lawful Rhode Islanders who are responsible citizens, family men and women, business owners, veterans, professionals, doctors and lawyers, tax payers - all are pillars of our communities. We have always played by the rules and yet we are being subject to criminalization without due cause. Besides being legislation that mirror ones which have historically been utterly ineffective at stopping crime, these bills will impose all of the burden on lawful gun owners. That is the very definition of injustice, particularly when the real solutions have nothing to do with legal gun ownership but everything to do with addressing the serious criminal recidivism problem, our illegal drug problem, our inner-city poverty problems and our broken mental health system. We must urge our leaders to do what is right and tackle the tough problems we face and not default to a pollitical stunt and go after law abiding gun owners. Please oppose these bills by signing this petition. Help preserve our individual liberty and demand that leaders in our General Assembly focus on the real problems that face our troubled state such as joblessness and our devastated economy.
