Our Impact in Brief
Over the course of 2022, we have worked on a variety of projects - here are some headline figures for the year:
  • 60 workshops facilitated
  • 50 organisations worked with and supported
  • 20 boroughs worked in
  • 17 new community researchers recruited and trained
  • 6 young people employed as community researchers.
  • 3 young people and one adult successfully gained employment
The Team
As we bid farewell to Kyle Bernath earlier on this year, we were joined by three new members of staff – David Stoughton, Community Engagement and Project Co-odinator in Cambridge, Jasmine Usiskin and Alex Cachinero-Gorman our new project support officers.

David, a resident in Cambridge has been a great addition to the team leading the community engagement work in the CB1 Community, developing and strengthening links with residents and local businesses. David is also the Chair of Living Streets Cambridge and plays a role in a number of other local community organisations.

Jazzy is the youngest member of our team and enjoys engaging with a range of different people to create change. She is currently supporting a number of community projects by managing and coordinating communications with charities and organisations, and assisting in planning and facilitating workshops.

Alex is a writer, translator, and youth worker who has worked in charities for over ten years, working with diverse groups of people on the frontlines of grassroots and non-profit organisations. Alex has supported Community Regen deliver engagement projects over the summer.

Community Engagement
Greenwich Council - Deep Engagement Programme

Community Regen supported seven community led neighbourhood teams in Greenwich to come together, develop a shared vision and strengthen ways to work together and respond to community needs.

Paul engaged the teams in a programme of workshops and one to one support to develop long term plans, enabling them to become more self-sustaining and resilient. This included providing facilitation support, training, advice, practical help and tools for neighbourhood teams in strengthening how they work, building their organisational, financial capacity and supporting them to access other opportunities for funding and support.

Peabody and Catalyst Investment Review

Working as part of a team from Campbell Tickell Paul worked on a strategic review of Peabody & Catalysts community investment programmes to assist them to create a joint strategy effective from Summer of 2022.

The work involved undertaking an evidence and insight- based approach strategic review of community activities, building on existing internal research and feedback. This included:

  • A Desk based review of community activities, research, and evaluation feedback
  • Discussions with key staff and relevant Heads of Services
  • Discussion with community development stakeholders including residents, voluntary/statutory, business and funding partners
  • Analysis of information/discussions and identification of strategic areas of focus
  • Drafting a report with recommendations and a 12-month delivery plan

This work informed a strategy and framework that built on existing approaches in both organisations in developing a local approach to community investment.

CB1 Estate, Cambridge

The lifting of Covid restrictions has allowed us to resume a full programme of activities at the  CB1 Estate in Cambridge

In addition to the regular meetings with residents and management, a fresh series of community events has been successfully launched.

Drawing on the strengths and capabilities of the wider community in Cambridge we managed to restore a programme of regular activities for parents with children and for health and wellbeing. We also hosted regular pop-up stalls during the summer.

Major events during the year or planned before Christmas include:

  • A picnic in the park with a Klezmer band
  • A lunch in the local community allotment
  • Business Forum talks and networking featuring local expert speakers
  • Pop-ups alongside our Friday food park
  • An outdoor film exhibition of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’
  • Wellbeing Sunday - a whole day of participatory events including Aikido, Yoga and Meditation as well as live music performances
  • Relaunch of regular events in our community room
  • A Christmas Party with a Santa and gifts for children

Lewisham Council

Paul worked in his Associate role for Campbell Tickell as a specialist resident engagement advisor providing strategic advice on the design of an extensive engagement exercise across the Borough.

Community Research

A number of our projects this year involved carrying out community research and engagement. To ensure that Community Regen provided a high standard of research, we trained a group of 6 young community researchers who were paid to support the Earl's Court Regeneration project.

In Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire, a team of 14 Peer Researchers were trained to carry out surveys and facilitate focus groups to support the Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Covid 19 Engagement project. This experience made a significant difference to the researchers who have gone on to support other research projects in the local area.

Community Regen delighted that some of our researchers have successfully been employed following their experience on our research projects.  To hear their stories, click on the images below.

Earl's Court Regeneration

Once again, this summer Community Regen in partnership with RealWorth were commissioned by the Earl’s Court Development Company (ECDC) to engage people attending the Underbelly festival over the summer.

The aim of the community research was to assess the social and economic impact that the Underbelly events had on local residents and people visiting the area. It was also an opportunity to find out people’s views, ideas and suggestions for the Earl’s Court regeneration site.

Adding to our pool of already trained researchers, Community Regen trained and paid a group of 6 new young researchers, supporting them to successfully carry out the research. Once completed, the data was submitted to RealWorth who lead on writing the report that was submitted to ECDC.

Community Engagement and Covid-19 - A Peer Research-led investigation of the impact of the pandemic

Community Regen working in partnership with NatCen Social Research were commissioned by Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Councils to carry out a piece of research to understand how people living in communities in parts of these boroughs felt and experienced the impacts of COVID-19 and establish what learning can be taken forward.

Community Regen led in recruiting, training and supporting a group of local peer researchers to carry out the survey and run a series of focus groups.

The peer research methods used when carrying out the research ensured the project was community led providing a platform for local people from minority communities to share their experience in depth.

A final report is currently being written by NatCen, which will be submitted to both Councils in the new year.

Capacity Building and Support
Greater London Authority (GLA) Civil Society Roots 3 - Ideas Camp

At the start of 2022, Community Regen and Sian Penner from Community Collective were commissioned by the GLA, to provide support to equity-led organisations, through a series of pre-application workshops called ‘The Idea Camp’. This was to develop their project ideas and submissions to the Civil Society Roots 3.

The Civil Society Roots 3, is a grant programme for community led organisations impacted by structural inequalities, targeted at 10 London Boroughs: Bromley, Enfield, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Newham, Redbridge, Sutton, Wandsworth.

Community Regen and Sian Penner from Community Collective delivered 4 workshops in each of the 10 Boroughs, each workshop was carefully designed to build connections between groups, explore how groups could work together, identify their strengths, develop their project ideas through defining their need/issue and gap, clarify priorities for the funding application and project idea and provide support on how to strengthen key aspects in their applications.

GLA Civil Society Roots 3 - Programme Support
In partnership with Sian Penner from Community Collective we were really excited to have been commissioned by the GLA to provide a programme of capacity building and support to 32 equity led organisations across 10 London Boroughs who were successful grantees for the Civil Society Roots 3.

The programme of support is designed to build relationships and networks, develop, or strengthen collective voice and advocacy and increase capacity and skills. We are delivering a series of online skills workshops, one to one support, borough specific networking events and pan-London events over 24-months. Each workshop has been carefully designed to meet the needs of the grantees based on initial engagement with organisations to understand their priorities and needs.
GLA Welcoming Hongkongers Fund - Programme Support
Community Regen and Sian Penner from Community Collective were commissioned by the GLA in summer to provide a programme of support to successful grant applicants.

Welcoming Hongkongers Fund is a grant programme for projects and organisations led by and/or for Hongkongers to identify activities that will contribute to their welcome and integration in London and have a positive impact on the lives of new arrivals from Hong Kong.

Our role is to support the successful grantees throughout their grant timeline. This involves supporting groups to build their capacity, improve coordination, support monitoring delivery, support collaborations to enable joining up working with other organisations and services, incubate collaborative projects and supporting organisations to become well networked.

As part of the support programme we are carrying out a series of targeted workshops and networking events to build up a pool of helpful resources focusing on specific areas and topics identified, as where the support will be most beneficial.
GLA Sports Unite Youth Violence Steering Group

Working alongside Sian Penner Associates, we continued to support the Sports Unite Youth Violence Steering Group in 2022. The Steering Group oversaw the delivery of three pilot projects around Safe Space, a Leadership Academy and Employment in Sports Governing Bodies. The pilots tested different approaches and captured learning to inform opportunities to influence delivery of sports organisations in London and influence policy.

Islington Health Hub

In August 2022 Paul facilitated a workshop for key stakeholders involved with Islington Health Hub and in November 2022 for stakeholders involved with North Central London (NCL) Health and Social Care Academy.  Both workshops involved understanding stakeholders current work, ways it could be strengthened and identifying shared priorities and actions to collaborate and work on going forward.

Communities 1st - Community Engagment and Development Workshop

We facilitated a workshop on Community Engagement and Community Development for staff at Communities 1st. The workshop aimed to give staff a deeper understanding of community engagement and community development, understand how their current work streams and roles fit within a community engagement framework and explore  ways for the team to work more effectively together on projects and initiatives.
Lewisham Homes - Independent Chair Achilles Road Resident Steering Group, Lewisham (RSG)

Paul supported residents to take on the role of chairing the Resident Steering Group and stepped back in his role as the Independent Chair. The new resident chair will continue the work of supporting the steering group meetings and ensure residents have a voice in their discussions with Lewisham Homes and influence the regeneration to ensure it is responsive to the needs of local residents.

Westway Trust

Community Regen lead a piece of work mapping the current supply of community facilities, spaces, studios, exhibition space within the local area to inform a costing and a financial model for the community spaces in the redeveloped Westway site.

BANG Edutaintment

Paul has continued in his role as Chair of BANG Edutainment. BANG is a charity rooted in Brent that works to support young people through projects designed to build their motivation and skills.

We’ve been working with them over the past year to develop a youth led Board and look forward to continuing to work with them in 2023.

Noel Park Big Local

Over the last year we have continued to support the Noel Park Big Local Partnership in Haringey, North London. The focus of our support has been largely around developing their legacy of a community run and owned community asset in the Big Local area.
Somers Town Big Local

Working alongside Julian Mellor from 2md, Community Regen coordinated a group of community researchers to engage the community in Somers Town about the provision, access and demand for community spaces as part of developing a Hub Feasibility Report.
Mottingham Big Local

Appointed by Local Trust, Paul has acted as the independent Chair of Mottingham Big Local Partnership over the last 8 months.  This has been alongside work to grow and strengthen the partnership so it can be resident led in its remaining few years.
