I don't need it. I just had Ikubi still down as Mayor, noticed he was in the militia now, and wanted to make sure my records were straight. I do note when you note dwarves' shifts into and out of the militia, but few previous overseers did that so there's no way the whole dwarfing list is (or should be) kept up to date anyway.

But people do love hearing about their dwarves, so go ahead and mention whatever you like, if it fits into the story.

Man, I was thinking I'll make a deeps battle hall, and finning it with Ballistae never even crossed my mind. What is wrong with me. Digging plans altered!

24 Obsidian, 246

Knowing we have a forgotten beast on the way to the upper fortress, I look for a battlefield on which to meet it. The only good place before it enters the inhabited regions, appears to be just below the entry hall to Ugathville, I order all squads to the hallway.

It catches Disproportionation before he can join up with his squad.

Kenning is caught with Sadbilly. Kenning creates an opening with his life. SadBilly uses the chance to land a single hit on the beast, buying time for the civilians to finish escaping the shaft.

As the beast ascends, it takes an intense dislike to the trainline.

The creature is cunning and bypasses the guard sqaudron, emerging on the path to Ugathville proper. We are out of time. I order all dwarves to attack.

It avoids the inhabited regions of Ugathville in exchange for wrecking more mechanisms.
And chasing LeJackal.

Lejackal runs the only way he can. Into the hall beneath the windmills. It is here the beast will be fought.
Lejackal makes a sweet dodge of the beast's webs and escapes. With luck the creature will return to the hall where our Marksdwarves will be far more effective.
Now the true fight can begin!
Chariot is also nearby, as is Slooby. And Schir and Xenocidal of the militia. (Civilians in Yellow, Militia in Blue. Dak in red.)

In the main hall, it catches Lejackal in its webs, but Schir engages it in battle.

Schir, while not able to hurt the beast on their first fight, does manage to force the beast back. Where it takes its frustration out on more mechanisms.

Xenocidal fights in the mechanism halls, but alone is no match for it.

It uses the shattered windmills to climb onto the surface. Koorisch, Rawkking, Synthorange, Saroitficis, and Maelin are on hand to fight it in the sun.

Rawkking is thrown into a wall by the monster as bolts whizz by it.

Finally a hit! the beast's weakness is Kangaroo bones!

It hits Koorisch in response. This just makes him mad.

Synthorange runs out of ammunition. This does not worry her.

Bettik, Rain, Synthorange, Koorisch, Saoritficis, Maelin, Rawkking, Ugly Ducklett, Tyrant, Kerrhyphen, kzin, and Dashing Gentleman are all attacking the beast now. Surely with this force of dwarves now against it this threat to the fortress will soon be eliminated.

Especially since it is missing multiple parts now.

With a mighty blow, Ugly Ducklett finishes the beast off.

Now just to pray that the medical dwarves can fix the damage...

27th Obsidian, 246

In the aftermath of the attack, I examine the barracks we have available for the militia. There appear to be only four suitable facilities. One assigned to multiple squads, another, and attached archery range, assigned to Gnu Order, and two unassigned.

Gnu Order has a barracks that overlooks the fortress gates.

One of the barracks I found is located above the residential halls, and is granted to The Rainy Boots.

The One-Way Outs are assigned one of the barracks near the old trade depot.

I also locate a suitable space below Ugathville. As one room is already an archery range, I convert another room nearby into another range, and assign Voxel Squad and The Walled Skies to the two barracks. It is at this point we run out of beds to place in the fortress, so I order some more while looking for suitable sites to erect 3 new barracks for our soldiers.

For the moment The Golden Barbs, Lovely Treaties, Bronze Delights, and Mountainous Bows will have to share.

I order two rooms dug out near the workshops, as well as a double room to be walled with stone near the trade depot.
This does mean we'll have a spare barracks should there be a need to expand the military.

I will rearrange and reinforce the squads once everyone who needs to has gotten to hospital.
We have quite a few casualties, even the hospital in the deeps is down to 2 free beds.

Dwarves shown are, from the top, going anti-clockwise: Chickenfrogdwarf, Clocks, Dirty Frank, The Archivist, Shorter Than Some. The two children tending to them are Centrium and Grey Hunter.
Worryingly, Shorter Than Some is a nurse.

The upper hospital actually has more spare beds. I hope the dispersal of patients doesn't hurt treatment too much.

Residents are, from the top left, clockwise: LeJackal, Ohtsam, Zebrin, rzal. Nopants is diagnosing Ohtsam, so that's reassuring. Quixzlizx's ghost is also present, and LordHattigan is having a drink in the same room.
So I guess the ghosts are real. Huh. I am also curious as to why the wounded from the surface were taken to the deeps, but at least they're IN hospital.

As for the switches I ordered pulled, apparently they raised the bridges near the forges. I lower the two end bridges to allow dwarves passage again.

Koorisch realises that his selflessness is no good if he dies himself, and makes his way to hospital. He and Maelin occupy another two beds in the hospital, and Rawkking joins them.

On the up side:

I have now been overseer for nearly half a year. During this time no more than 10 dwarves have been idle at once. Nor shall they be. Though I do worry I won't be able to achieve all I wanted to before my time is up. Working to extract the holy metal especially looks like a task I will not be able to complete. Though perhaps I will be surprised. At least the trash will be dealt with.

Spelothing becomes a dwarven child too, giving us another helper around the fortress.

Clothing production will be delayed though as we seem to have run out of cloth to work with.

Post Poste helps move some of the bars produced by the smelters. Though a simple peasant, it is through acts such as these that Bronzestabbed's destiny shall be achieved.

Missing. Wasn't he in the hosp...

Oh.

Why am I not surprised.

On the other hand, it looks like we may soon be getting a new weapon added to our arsenal.

I could not find Frozen Flame anywhere in the fortress. Now I see why.

Rizzen claims one of the magma forges in his mood.

Even nearly a month after his defeat, Dak's webs still trouble the dwarves of the fortress. Even slowing down vital medical work.

And then...

Hey guys, do we have a list of descriptions of any really masterpiece-quality artifacts created by drawves in moods that have come out of Bronzestabbed so far? I'm just curious. We used to list those as they were created.

I'm guessing at this point we may be tripping over them with the skillsets that have developed, but I'm curious about the really unique artifacts held in Bronzestabbed.

Don't mind the date, this is real.

The Murk fades away without everyone having to rush in to the fortress in a panic. Clearly this is because the fortress is far too intimidating due to the relentlessly worked dwarves within.

I also order memorials errected to some of the fallen dwarves. Put in places where dwarves often work so they can always remember that death is just one mis-step away for them.

This apparently pleases the Fortress' ghosts, so I guess dwarves do get to rest after death. So that's something for people to look forward to.

For the most terrifying part of the fortress re-fortification plan, I order the main fortress drawbridge deconstructed.

Should any enemies appear between bridges, we will be unable to keep them out of the fortress proper until the new bridge is erected and connected to a lever.

The first Ballista is completed, and I order it prepared for firing, just in case.

In the forges, they tell me rizzen has gathered all the materials and is creating another artifact for the fortress.

And, on the 3rd of Slate, the fortress population grows by another one

Welcome to the fortress, Yamtaggler

Impy, along with Otto Print and Atmok Ik, construct The Walled Skies' archery range, which means all 3 crossbow sqauds are now able to train with their bows in the fortress.

rizzen completes the artifact, Usnberim.

And our medical staff seem to be doing well at treating the injured. No-one has died in hospital since LeJackal!
Only Schir and Maelin remain in the upper hospital beds.

Though the lower beds are still heavily occupied. Klokwurk, The Archivist, Dirty Frank, Clocks and Chickenfrogdwarf still await the completion of their treatments.

One of our recruits is most assuredly not happy.

The decay of a sibling. Yeah. That might do it.

We must complete the burial shaft soon. I assign more dwarves to prioritise mechanics to connect the dump plates. For the moment, I will build coffins just past the hospital to house the bodies of the dead until they can be properly immortalised in the lava.

And then...

Maybe they can help.

Really love seeing artifact crossbows crop up. I've only ever seen one used in a fort of mine before, the owner would go hunting with it regularly, it fired so fast that three bolts would be in the air by the time the first one struck the weasel/kea he was after. Next time I lucked out and got one, the fortress descended into a tantrum spiral before anybody picked it up.

Actually, I'd love to see a vampire given an artifact bow, and fortified into a 1x1 square with a drop off-hatch for more bolts. Everlasting machine bolt turret.

8th Slate, 247

Migrant report:

9 New dwarves presented themselves at the gates of Bronzestabbed. Their names and talents are listed here.

Avelin is skilled at both Gemcraft and marksmanship. He is thus assigned to Gnu Order.

Tyshalob is a child, and does whatever the heck she wants.

Duckbill has some skill at blacksmithing, and is assigned to the forges

Frionnel has no particularly outstanding talents, and is thus assigned to join the militia, as an axe dwarf in The Golden Barbs.

Ramichk claims to have some medical skills, and is assigned to the medical staff.

UraniumAnchor is a skilled animal trainer. He is also assigned mechanics and siege operations.

Fanzay has some skill with the blade, and is assigned to The Mountainous Bows.

Dowl is another child, and again does what she wants.

Vetinari100, while quite skilled at appraisal, is not as good as our current broker, so is assigned peasant duties for the moment, as I have drawn down our mining and tree cutting staff until we have more picks.

And a few events that simply cannot wait till the next report.

Firstly, I have ordered the remaining lower level Ballistae and Fortifications constructed. I'll add the door to the fortress when the fortifications are mostly complete.

Pokey calms down.

And we have a thief who shows a weakness in our fortifications.
