The fortress is over 11 years old now, so any dwarven child who was just under 12 at worldgen (the age of majority for dwarves, apparently) will be 23 on arrival; and no children will arrive who are younger than 11. This problem will continue going forward, and after 12 years, all arriving "children" will be older than children-who-are-now-adults that were born in the fortress 12+ years past. Eventually I suspect it becomes pretty absurd: if you ran a fortress for 150 years, you'd have "children" who may die before they become adults. I'm not sure what happens when you run a fortress for more than 170 years. Maybe the kids (and all other historical migrants for that matter) just drop dead of old age on arrival... or on the 1st day of the year, or on their birthday. One of those, I think. Or maybe you just don't get historical migrants any more.

I guess that makes sense, since the game only ever knows that knew children are happening in the fortress proper. It doesn't simulate ongoing life in the larger world. That is sort of funny to think that no one else is making babies anymore; that or everyone outside the fortress is a dwarfy Benjamin Button.

The new coffins are laid out. And with how many bodies the dwarves find to put in to them, I seriously question the dedication to tending the overworked that previous overseers possessed. Every one of them is filled in short order. I will have to lay more out in the future The new rooms for the latest migrants are coming together nicely. Proper rooms of stone. The lower level of the fortifications are also practically complete. As is the new sword bridge, which I order immediately reconnected. Ahh, the things you can do with 200 masons. Speaking of, the upper barracks' are dug out, Next up will be walling and flooring them with stone so they sound right. And outfitting them with furniture of course. Speaking of that, we're out of beds yet again. I may need more carpenters. The upper level pressure plates are also connected. 3 more levels to go and we can begin dumping the fortress waste into the Magma. Klokwurk, while still in hospital, recieves some super fancy stitches. I am unsure how I feel about the holy metal being used for medicinal purposes. This is a much better use of it, really. I also decide that I need to keep my wife company while dining. And then: Again in the south. The cloud swiftly envelops part of the passing herd of Kangaroo. It is high time I reconstituted the military again. I add Teddles and Krysmdragon to The Bronze Delights. Next up will be looking through the hospital for dwarves that are out of action or unable to fight completely. The Murk quickly dissipates once more, leaving only the murked creature in its wake. Right. Lets do this. We'll wait till it actually threatens before fighting it. But we can clear the military for action now. Gnu Order is 100% fighting fit, though currently on their month of rest. Schir is the first to be stood down, as he cannot stand and must melee. And is still undergoing treatment. He is replaced by AmishSpecialForces, completing The Rainy Boots. Next up is The One-Way Outs. Given their name, no reassignments will be made. The only at risk dwarf I spot is Dirty Frank, currently in the lower hospital. I will try to keep the squad out of combat until his treatment is finished at least. THe Golden Barbs have casualties as well. Most significant is The Archivist, who is in a very bad way. Dwarves are really bad at triage. SilentW replaces him. I feel that I simply must remove our Hammerer from command of Voxel Squad, so he can better focus on hammerering. Also because he has quite enough wounds. Saoritficis is promoted to lead the squad in his place, Viola The Mad bringing the squad back up to 10. Peas, of The Lovely Treaties, is tempting to remove from active duty. However he has significant experience, so I leave him commissioned. OniElem, however, is removed from active service due to his injuries. Emong is put in to the squad in OniElem's place. Looking at The Walled Skies, the first thing I notice is one of our medical staff, Tangents, is assigned to them. I remove him immediately then commence the health assessment. Enfield is conscripted to replace Tangents. The Bronze Delights are another squad that needs some reorganising. Macha AND w00tmonger have both lost their left feet. Met and Jazzimus are brought in to replace them. Finally, The Mountainous Bows. Only one replacement here, JimmyTheD is another dwarf missing a foot. I wonder what happened to take 3 dwarves feet. Tarox replaces her, which completes the reorganisation of the military. In other Fortress news, it seems that Afrosquirrel decided to have a drink with PublicOpinion. Despite the latter being quite dead. SpermySmurf remains useless at everything. He is a good candidate for militia recruitment in the future. 2nd Felsite, 247

And I was so looking forward to putting the medical staff to work in the REST of the fortress.

2nd Felsite, 247 The fortress entrance is comig along nicely. There's still work to be done on the upper levels to roof it all in, but the ground level is quite solid aside from needing a few finishing touches. The Murkaroo continues following the rest of its herd. Its current path will bring it close to our gates, I order two squads, The One Way Outs and Gnu Order, stationed at the gates as a precautionary measure. This cut short AfroSquirrel's drink with Public Opinion, and he fled back to the fortress. The Kangaroos, both normal and murked, proceed north beyond the range of our scouts All the clothes production we've been doing DOES deplete the fortress of cloth. So no new clothes can be made until more is made or traded for. Apparently drinking with PublicOpinion is what everyone wants to do these days. While I had hoped connecting the hatches one at a time would prevent this, it appears that Penguingo stood on one of the hatches that was already connected to pressure plates while connecting another. At least he showed proper dedication to working until the end, screaming that he could not continue working as the lava melted his flesh off. I order a monument built to him. I also order a floor constructed a level below the hatches so that the next dwarf who stands on an active hatch will only fall a single story. His screams awaken a beast in the depths. [img]http://lpix.org/1157921/As[ad.png[/img] And on the surface. Aspad enters the caverns near Omela Who is Omela? This is: The Elves fail to recognise the correct entrance to the fortress. Perhaps once the Ballista is installed in the hall they will. As I feared, The Archivist dies to his wounds from facing Dak. The incompetence of the medical dwarves fails another Hero of BronzeStabbed. The Murk returns, this time on the advised side of the river. I suspect this is going to be a much larger cloud and order all dwarves inside. The Elves have also finished entering the fortress, so I can seal it once everyone is inside. It appears, however, that we have bigger problems to worry about. Aspad has wasted no time in entering BronzeStabbed, and already threatens Triple A, one of the children. It appears there are many paths for the beasts into Bronzestabbed. I will order them closed at a later date. For now we mst defeat this beast. Our Crossbows will be essentially useless as we must fight it on the stairwell. We cannot rally the militia before attacking either, for an examination shows that it threatens not just the child Triple A, but the children Savage Gentleman; Dowl; Arioch; Oberndorf; and KANE, the cook as well! And the beast is currently fighting dogs on the level between Savage Gentleman and the rest. Triple A is actually the safest of the lot, but that stairwell is the only way to the fortress proper. Fortunately this beast seems less effective in combat than Dak was, stray dogs holding it in the depths. Savage Gentleman has managed to even get a level above it, though like everyone else, he's still faced with the problem of a single stairwell out. The dogs even manage to inflict some wounds on the beast, slowing it down. Oystertoadfish is on the scene, Jorenko in her arms Whether from the wounds it recieved at the jaws of our dogs, or due to the presence of an Armed dwarf (she has a steel axe), the beast starts to retreat towards the caverns. But we will not let this threat escape to strike again. Reports from the surface indicate that the Murk infected an echnidna this time, then dissipated once more. Kane takes this moment to flee to safety. Doc Aquatic proves that the stairwell is no obstacle to crossbow fire. I...may have mis-spoken about the strength of the beast against our dwarves. A single strike was all it took. Professor Bling starts knocking parts off the beast with his steel axe. Taking one of its tails. DashingGentleman shows his worth in the military, and hacks the beast to pieces. The baby, Jorenko also took a big hit during the fight. M is the only dwarf that visits the hospital after the fight. It turns out Jorenko died with her mother. I trade some of our crafts for clothing from the elves. Sadly they brought little wood or thread. Just lots of alcohol and some seeds. I seal off the fortress from the caverns, so hopefully we'll have some peace from the beasts for a while. I also order the new barracks furnished and the walls and floor made stone. We get another Snatcher. He may have taken one of our children. The nearest squad is The One-Way Outs, and while Zergle an attack, it does not stop him. Spermy Smurf is also nearby, so I conscript him into The Rainy Boots and order them, as well as Gnu Order, to join the fray. Unfortunately, he is too fast for us. And Improbable Lobster is added to the Kidnapped. I order all children to stay inside the fortress. Whether or not they'll listen, who knows. The month of Felsite ends. 1st Hematite,247

Love the fortifications; when you finish up top you should see about doing something about the cavern creatures wandering into the fortress. It's always been a DF dream of mine to create some sort of centralized gatehouse into the underground as well, with the main fortress safely sandwiched between defenses on both the surface and caverns.

NO GODS PLEASE NO. Those things are disgusting enough, and now I hear from some of the scouts that one of them has been Murked? If I were still in charge, I'd send a squad out to kill it immediately, but I suppose I'll have to trust Veloxyll to maintain security. He's done a wonderful job with the outer defenses. Sword Gate is now nearly impenetrable. I'm going to sleep with one of my short swords under my bed in case that echidna gets into the fortress, anyways. 2nd Hematite, 247 Work continues on the upper level of the fortifications Another Murk cloud drifts in to sight of the fortress. I wonder if this one will be of a notable size. Yes. Yes it will. I order everyone inside the fortress. Checking the hospitals, I see that the doctors have chased everyone out, so I restore their normal and hauling duties. I also place the last of our coffins while we have time. I follow this up with ordering 60 more made. I also order the last two plates connected in the Penguingo Memorial shaft. Once this is done we can start disposing of fortress waste properly. Frankosity ignores my return to fort orders and drinks, watching the Murk roll by. rzal is even more brazen, moving to place a cage trap even as the murk rolls westwards. Fortunately he is not punished for his hubris, and the murk dissipates. The final ballista of the main wall is completed. Now just to complete the upper levels. Another small cloud of Murk drifts nearby. It doesn't grow much before it drifts away. The Merchants leave, and our scouts spot new arrivals. As well, the drop shaft is connected up. As soon as the safety floor is removed, trash dumping can commence. And this too I guess 26th Hematite, 247

And to finish my pre-weekend posting: 23rd Hematite, 247 Migrant Report Many new migrands have joined the fortress during my Overseership. This shall be my last Migrant report though, unless we get a midseason migration group. The first new arrival is Thoradin, a dwarf skilled in diagnosis. We can always use more medical dwarves. The next arrival is SuRoXT and is unremarkable, and will serve as a peasant for now. Following him is Jon, who has some butchering experience. For now he will join the swelling ranks of the fortress peasantry. Calhanol also joins us, a dwarf very similar to Jon. More peasants are always useful with the commissioning of the Penguingo garbage shaft. After this comes Athanboros, who has some architectural skill. Another pesant. Priapus is next to cross through the Sword Gate, having skills in crossbow-making and animal care. Peasant. Man Whore enters the fortress next. Another peasant. Next through the gate is Canorade. A skilled leatherworker. Finally, Ebsation joins the fortress. Another peasant to throw at hauling labours. Interestingly no children this wave, though plenty of potential militia replacements.
