Why this petition matters

 

In 2010, Gatorade introduced the G Natural Gatorade line which is made with "natural flavors and ingredients,"specifically sweetened with Stevia and sold in Whole Foods grocery stores within the United States. G Natural was released in two flavors: G Orange Citrus and G2 Berry. 

 

G Natural did not contain the artificial ingredients found in the rest of the Gatorade family of sports drinks.  On its website, the company said the G Natural drinks provided the benefits of regular Gatorade while using ingredients like sea salt. The line had limited distribution in select Whole Foods and Kroger locations  Gatorade never widely marketed or advertised this product in national campaigns. 

 

In November 2012, PepsiCo decided to discontinue manufacture and sales of the G Natural Sports Drink line.  According to Ellen Lochhead, Director of Consumer Relations at PepsiCo "through continued engagement with athletes on their fueling needs and preferences, we found that Gatorade Naturals didn’t resonate with our core consumer and, as a result, sales didn’t meet expectations. So unfortunately, the decision was made to discontinue the Natural line" 

 

According to Candace Choi of the AP, "It's not clear why PepsiCo didn't invest more heavily in marketing Gatorade Naturals. Americans in recent years have shifted toward foods they feel are natural, with a growing number shunning processed foods that contain chemicals they don't recognize."

 

The sports drink industry has come under fire in the past year for including artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives in its sports drinks, many of which are banned in Europe. Last year PepsiCo responded to another Change.org petition by removing the flame retardent BVO from its sports drinks. 

 

The G Natural sports drink product was a solution to the growing demand from consumers for foods and drinks without artificial additives.  Let PepsiCo know that there is wide demand for a sports drink product like G Natural, and ask them to rebrand this product line under the name "G Free" and market it to all consumers, not just a "core consumer group."
