Hi, I just got a free deskpro 6400 EN, I have no clue which motherboard
it uses or CPU type socket, I know it's a pentium 2 400mhz so I'm
assuming the CPU socket is slot 1 100mhz bus, but i want to make sure
about this.
I'd like the full specs on the motherboard before I upgrade the CPU to
p3 and compaq has ZERO information regarding the motherboard it uses.
the only info I found is that the motherboard bus speed is 100mhz,
that's about it.
Thanks!

Hello :
Most Pentium IIs were Slot 1 processors.
This is fairly easy to identify by looking at your processor.
If it is sitting perpendicular to the motherboard, it is a Slot 1. If it
appears to lie flat on the motherboard, it is likely a Socket 7 or Socket
370.
You are correct in wanting to identify which of these applies to your
computer. The processor you purchase will have to be of the same form
factor.

The twin Slot1/P550 processors on my AP400 workstation are mounted flat to
the board; much more satisfactory mechanically. Have seen them flat on some
other models too. Check Quick Reference on Compaq support for diagrams.

I know of no PII desktops that used Socket 7/370. All are Slot 1s, to my
knowledge. Slot 1s can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Makes no
difference.

Please let us no what success you have in upgrading. I have a similar
Deskpro; Compaq would only say that "they" support only up to the pII 400.
Surely other slot 1 cpu's may work.

Some of the workstations and servers have a right angle PII slot one so the
pII lies flat on the MB, but it still plugs into a slot one and not a
socket.

As I just noted. And not just servers and workstations. 4800 and 4600
Presarios had this type of mounting for PIIs.

Thank you all for your responses, I'm back to square one, sorta.
I now know it is slot 1 for certain.
would a p3 CPU 1ghz 100mhz bus S1 work?
that is the question and I shall find out about this soon.
thank you all
:)

I also have a Deskpro EN, this one with a PII 350 rather than 400, so it's a
good bet yours is essentially the same as mine. It's Slot 1 for sure, and FSB
can be either 66 or 100 MHz.

Maximum CPU speed for mine seems to be 600 MHz, as indicated in a
specifications PDF file I have, and it's also written in the jumper settings
right on the motherboard. Look right on the surface, on the side edge opposite
where your power switch is. If it's like mine, you'll see your choices there.

With respect to putting a P3 I GHz/100 MHz FSB in there, I'd love to do the
same thing, but from email discussions I've been having with a hardware-savvy
person, probably not possible. It's the whole planned-obsolescence thing.
Still curious to hear an authoritative answer to this question. It may be that
the only way to know is to find a hardware dealer who'll agree to a
"buy-if-it-flies" kind of agreement.

You won't find a 1 GHz Slot 1, by the way - you'd have to get an FCPGA 1
GHz/100 and use a converter card.
