Late Granite? 239? ARGH!! I was almost done! Okay, calm, get back in control. It felt a little easier this time, not sure why. I do think that shock tends to drive me out. I'll have to watch that, probably my own actions booted me last time. I'll have to be a little more...subtle. I have just the thing, though. but first...why is everyone so sad? Did I catch a few in the flames? Here's hoping! Well, I need to get my bearings again anyhow, might as well take a walk around and figure out just what happened. This place is so confusing, it's...changed. Taking a look over the wall, it looks like the fires still burn across the river. I guess I haven't been gone as long as I thought. Soldiers spar, nothing unusual there. I get the impression some of the animals are being neglected. Not my concern, let them go feral for all I care. Ha! I think I figured out why everyone is so sad. Not really what I expected, though. I took another look over the wall and I'm pretty sure I know where they are. Not sure how I feel about this one. They got what they deserved, but that was MINE to give. Anyhow, I have something else to give, something a little more...long-term. I'll have to do this carefully, but I'm pretty sure that with this body I can do practically anything without reproach, at the very least without oversight. Let the dwarves hide inside all they want, I'll burn them from the inside out, and what's better, I'll make them do it themselves. Then they'll know what they've done, they'll see their cruel, selfish greed for what it is. But I'll need time, this one won't be as easy as lighting up a few trees. While I was surveying for this "public works" project, I found a lever, unlabeled. Not sure what it does. Might have to pull it later to see. Also while out surveying, I kept coming across locked doors. After asking nearby dwarves, it turns out that apparently I (or my host) ordered them locked. I pressed them further and they explained there was some beast in the caves. I need to be careful with this, they seemed suspicious when I was asking them about orders I had apparently given just days before. Anyhow, from what I managed to glean, there's this beast wandering about the caves, and maybe it's made it part way in to the fort? I don't know if it has a path in the rest of the way or not, nobody seemed to know. Nobody seemed worried at the moment, so it must be fine. Fine enough for my purposes, anyhow. The fires have burned out across the river. As a warning shot, it had...mixed effects. Although the sight of one of the creatures that got caught in it is certainly giving the locals the creeps, that much at least was a raging success. I go to check on the digging orders I'd sent out. I arrive to find no progress whatsoever. The hell? Okay, fine, we'll do this the old fashioned way. Checking the overseer reports, I find a slew of cancellations. After a quick check through recent forms, I figure out why. Apparently we're still on alert, and the area I ordered to be excavated is off-limits. Not seeing any immediately obvious reason to maintain the alert, I tell everyone to get back to work. Progress begins almost immediately. It will be a thing of beauty, of that I have no doubt. I just need to stay in control long enough to see it through. As long as there's no major news, I can do this. "Uhh, Internet Kraken? Excuse me?" That name sounds familiar. "HEY, OVERSEER." Oh right, that's me. "What?!" "Apparently lunnrais got locked outside. He's been shouting status updates over the wall this whole time, and I just thought you should know what he just reported." I'm having those same Chrome issues with the GIFs. Not necessarily the dwarf head one, but the bigger one. Also, can I move that we give Munki and IK 2 in-game years instead of just the one? I'd like to see way more one-upsmanship going on between them, and it would roughly give them each a whole overseer year.

Goodness. That's a lot of posts. I'd guess IK would still get a roll since he didn't "win", but that's Lepermurk's call of course. It does make it complicated since Murki has given up part of his turn. And so on. I guess I'm in favour of it. I imagine some would like to see straight turns from either/both, as opposed to the current entertainment.

All right, I'll try to lay off the (bigger) gifs. I just like 'em because I find it easier to see what's going on in a single gif where everything is lined up and such as opposed to a series of static shots where you have to figure out yourself that they're related somehow. But yeah, that one with the public works project, that one was sorta big, although I still kept it under 1 meg. Duly noted, though, I'll be gentle for those of you who's moms haven't upgraded your computer since 1997. I'll still use them for the flashing-icon ones, those are extremely descriptive imho, and are generally only around 100k. Leperflesh posted:As a totally unrelated aside, I've just noticed that Bad Munki somehow has significantly more posts in this thread than I do. How is that possible? While switching off does mean each person has twice as long a break between posts, it also makes for a bit more overhead, since with the way we're doing it, you have to spend some amount of time just catching up to figure out wtf is going wrong at that moment. The handoff itself is easy (we're using github) but the whole MO here (loving with the other guy without actually being outright destructive) is actually quite difficult and time-intensive. I think a year would be sufficiently exhausting, thanks.

12th Sandstone, 245 I slept for 8 days. 8 days I did not see what happened in this fort. I could only dream about it and its fate. I dreamt of fire, ash, and death. The inferno has consumed the land lying beyond the river has passed, leaving nothing but blackened earth in its wake. A sight some would be terrified of, and yet I find it...calming. For the creatures of the murk are not immune to the flame. Their bodies have burned and left them weak and frail. Even now, they cower in the river, afraid that more fires will start and burn off even more of their tainted flesh. I know not what has caused this fire to start, but it has...inspired me. If I could bring the spark of endless fires to the surface and drown this blighted wasteland in flames, evil would be defeated. There would be no life to corrupt, nothing for the murk to taint. What can evil do when it has nothing to manipulate? Yes, I believe this is the solution I have been looking for. 13th Sandstone, 245 Of course since I came up with a great idea something has to come along and sour my mood. Judging from the sounds of a dwarf being smashed against a cave wall, the forgotten beast Vucan has wormed its way into the lower areas of the fort. I had honestly completely forgotten about this thing since it had caused no problems since its initial arrival. Another blunder on my part... Still, I'm not going to make the same mistake again. I've ordered the entire military to group up in an area I believe the beast is near. Hopefully whatever dwarf it is mangling will distract it long enough for help to arrive. 13th Sandstone, 245 Unfortunately, the forgotten beast charged into the upper levels of the fort sooner than I expected. It quickly caught sight of another dwarf and began chasing him. A pack of stray dogs were hanging around this area for some reason, and tried to the beast. The scratches and bites of tiny little dogs were of no concern to the monster, which kept chasing the dwarf it had spotted. However as it attempted to climb up a flight of stairs one of the dogs latched onto its rear leg, causing it to tumble back down. Despite its massive size this turtle creature was just as helpless as its smaller cousins once flipped over, so Zebrin casually walked up to its head and hacked it off. Zebrin is proving to be quite competent at killing these creatures of darkness. She may prove to be useful in the future, so I’ll keep an eye on her. Shame about the dwarf that got killed before the army of arrived. Oh well, he was just an engraver so no big loss. 15th Sandstone, 245 In order to protect this fort I have made efforts to improve the effectiveness of our militia. Already I have filled in the holes left by recent deaths, but more drastic measures have been taken to solve some bigger problems. One issue was that the barracks for all the squads were scattered around the fortress. As I want the military to move as one cohesive unit, this was unacceptable. So I have had a whole new wing of barracks dug out. This area shall serve as the training grounds for our entire militia. Should trouble arise, they will all be able to move to it as one unit rather than a bunch of fragmented squads. Zebrin has replaced the deceased Vox Nihili as both hammerer and squad captain. Zebrin has proved to be a competent soldier, but more importantly she is someone I can trust. She has the perfect qualities for a loyal subordinate. It is my hope that as hammerer she can learn more about the plans of the queen. Her dark conspiracy is hidden from most of the fort but I'm sure it is there, I just need to find some clues. Zebrin shall be of great assistance. 17th Sandstone, 245 A miner named InwardChaos came to me and complained about unsafe working conditions in the areas I had ordered dug out. I told her to stop loving around and be more careful. If she wasn't careless and channeled properly there wouldn't be any caveins. Then I realized I hadn't ordered anything to be channeled in the first place and went to see what place she was talking about. Orders had been put in to dig out a strange structure. I have no idea what it is supposed to be, and I sure as hell didn’t tell them to dig it. The digging area spans over multiple levels. What purpose could this possibly serve? My guess is it just supposed to waste the miner's time and potentially hurt them. Another order made by the dark conspiracy to ruin my name. They'll have to do better than that to trick me though. I ordered all digging in this area to stop, as I saw no point in letting it continue. 20th Sandstone, 245 What the hell is going on here? I had a bad feeling that more had been done to ruin my reputation than just the odd digging, and sure enough I was right. Once again the graves have been disturbed, only this time I was too late to save any of them. All the corpses have been tossed out and left to rot. I have ordered the coffins to be placed again and the bodies reburied, but the damage is already done. Many dwarves are highly disturbed by this treatment of the dead andI'm the on being blamed for it! This whole situation is very confusing to me. I can no longer dismiss my days of unconsciousness as a result of drinking too much. Someone is taking me out of the picture and then ordering these strange actions to be done. Obviously the queen is responsible but I can't figure out why she doesn't just kill me and replace me with some imposter. Instead she lets me live and try to fix the damage she is causing. What is she trying to accomplish with this? Bah, I need another cold drink. All this thinking gives me a terrible headache, and it is way too loving hot in this office. 1st Timber, 245 The rest of the month has been rather uneventful. I haven't learned anything about the dark conspiracy at work. When I ask questions to the other dwarves, they always seem scared, like they think I'm going to hurt them. I don't know why, but I mean sure I yell at these idiots a lot but that doesn’t justify this kind of paranoia. It makes me want to knock some sense into them, the morons. At the very least work on my magma project is progressing well. The plan is simple. A series of pumps will bring magma from the depths up to the surface, at which point it will slowly but steadily flood this wasteland, burning everything. It is a drastic measure to be sure but it is the only way I can see to put an end to this evil. The murk corrupts anything it comes in contact with, so the only logical solution is to give it nothing to corrupt in the first place. Obviously this poses a significant danger to Bronzestabbed itself, but I will take the necessary precautions to ensure that the magma does not flood the fort. I am not an idiot, I can design this properly. I must admit, I am rather excited by the idea of this working. Finally, after all these years of sitting back doing nothing but watching, I have come up with a way to deal with this menace. I’ll be praised for years to come for this brilliant plan. They’ll all regret doubting me! Yes, nobody will ever doubt me again... Internet Kraken fucked around with this message at 00:40 on Feb 14, 2013 |

We've already had the discussion upthread about popularity contests and the rules for Overseer selection. The random aspect gives more people a chance to get in, folks that might be unknown but really good (like Sky Shadowing). Swapping over to an appointed 'rah-rah we like X make them Overseer/give them ten years' will only serve to stagnate the LP and future LPs because nobody is going to vote for the unknown, and then we end up missing some really good players. Personally I think the setup we have is brilliant, and absolutely the best for a succession fort. Leperflesh was pretty genius when he developed it.
