Did the 'unnamed dwarf' not have a nickname (i.e. had it noon been named after a goon)? If it was a useless farmer that was me, I left them unnamed so the next Overseer would be able to have a dwarf right off the bat in case they needed one (didn't have one named after them already).

I had mentioned it in my notes, so I'm doubting it was the same one.

I used Therapist to group dwarves by migration, and found the unnamed dwarf in the most recent migration. So it's not the guy you left, unless Therapist is confused. The most likely explanation is that Bad Munki just missed a guy when he was processing the last migration wave.

Another good thing about all the deaths, it's made it possible for new people on the dwarfing list to migrate to the fortress rather than always having the same names from every LP being in every fortress at the beginning and never having a high enough turnover for replacements to show up. Migrations of new folk after a bunch of entertaining and/or unintentional deaths is good, stagnant populations peppered by occasional births while hiding from Sieges until they go away is boring.

Hopefully new migrants will also actually come. I haven't played DF in a long time, but I remember mass casualties as being one of the things that could make dwarves go "nope" at the prospect of migrating to your fortress.

This is likely, since they were trying to charge in through the gates while dodging babby murk zombies and such, making the front gate a swarm of activity. I tried to look through the unit list after I thought everyone was in to see if I missed anyone, but I must have missed him.

This is actually something we've tried to avoid in this LP anyway. The population cap is currently at 300, and we've only had (as far as I know) one full term where the dwarves were solidly against the cap and no migrations as a result. Currently we're at around 255 dwarves, so there's plenty of room for migrants.

The concern, of course, is game lag due to too many dwarves, but right now I really think the game's performance (or lack of it) has more to do with the sheer quantity of items in Bronzestabbed, which is, uh, a lot. Adding another 20 dwarves probably doesn't impact performance nearly as much as (for example) adding another 100 items of clothing (which has to be done constantly, due to clothing wearing out and discarded, but never being destroyed).

Based on the dwarfing list, we're quite close to having dwarfed 400 goons in this LP, which is more than Gemclod and I suspect more than any other LP, ever (and I'm including non-DF LPs too). I really didn't think we'd get that far down the list when I started this LP, and I also never dreamed the dwarfing list would extend to over 600 - we're at 639 right now, which is just ridiculous.

Unfortunately, few goons who get dwarfed these days are going to get a spotlight in-game. In the first couple of years, people have a much better chance of being mentioned, but with a population of 250+, most dwarves are going to live and (sooner or later) die mostly anonymously. It's just the nature of the game. I tried to come up with as fair a system as I could for putting people on the dwarfing list: I telegraphed the posting of this LP for weeks ahead of time in the DF Games thread, I used an automated system for tracking first-come-first-serve, and I've enforced that system on every overseer. But ultimately, if you came to this LP more than a week after it started, you're still a ways away from getting dwarfed now, almost nine months later.

The dwarfing list started taking applicants at 15:42 on 6/23/2012. And the next signup, about #396 (not really, because some guys have been moved around and the first seven are included, but close enough) signed up at 12:33 on 6/26/2012.

So we're a little less than three days into the LP signups right now. Ridiculous.

Right. Well, since I'm your new Overseer, I suppose I should introduce myself.

There, done. Now, I've been looking around the fortress incognito, and, well. It's a good thing you got me in to clean things up.

While I understand there was a large battle outside recently, it looks like things have calmed down, so I order the gate open.

This also lets the victorious rzal back in too. Good job saving the fortress!

I have mostly kept my observations to the upper levels, and let me tell you, I am not quite sure what some of the previous overseers were thinking. The stockpiles you have are VERY poorly organised, I must say.

And this. I don't even. Who organised this giant mess. It's meant to be a stockpile, not a corner of the room you dump everything in!

I talked to some of the dwarves about this place, and apparently one of the previous Overseers was a real joker.

Ugathville. Right, because since we worship the god of muck-crypts that must mean we love muck. Real funny. So, my first task will be to get the few dwarves here bedrooms in proper dwarven stone rooms.

Speaking of funny, I checked the notes on one of the residences over there.

What the heck is a fiendish murk zombie anyhow.

The regular part of the fortress does have quite nice rooms however

With room to expand for more migrants, or whoever else needs to be moved in.

And the dining room is amazing, of course.

Having reviewed the fortifications now that the fighting is over, I have no idea what the plan is. I guess put crossbows here, but the rest is a mystery. If this tower is taken, the enemy can fire right into the courtyards. So we'll have to work on that too.

And looking at some of my fellow dwarves, their clothing is quite scraggly. I will have to look into expanding cloth production, it is clearly insufficient.

A SINGLE loom and clotheirs shop. That explains it.

I've also been told that there are Magma forges deep below

I will have to inspect them later though, as I must visit the Queen.

She's got quite the crew of visitors up there.

Speaking of a crew:

ONE HUNDRED DWARVES BEING LAZY. We'll see about that. Oh yes we will!

One last note:
While looking over the register of dwarves, I noticed something amiss.

I THINK NOT YOUNG SIR.

There, that's more accurate.

Current tasks:
1) Relocate citizens from Ugathville
2) Make the fortifications make some sense
3) expand Clotheirs to make all the pants
4) Explore the Magma forges and Visit the Queen.
5) Put you lazy so and sos to work.

And yes, I took the un-named migrant. Become overseer, push yourself to the top of the Dwarfing list :D

Just a note, the only way into the tower is:
A) Flying units.
B) Coming up through the fortress proper.

Today as I was leaving my rooms I sighted a mason walking down the corridor. I paused and watched as he removed the "Reigning Overseer" portion of the sign indicating ownership.

"Thank you, it's only been a year since I put that order in," I said.

"This order's more recent than that, Sky," replied the mason, taking out another slab and sliding it into the empty slot. With that he packed up his tools and walked off to get a drink. I paused and read the new slab:

Sky Shadowing
Raging Egomaniac
Not to be trusted

I screamed to all the gods my rage. Was it my fault the masons were incompetent enough to LOSE my work order to have that removed and replaced with the much more correct "Former Overseer"? True, I had never even summoned the courage to ask Internet Kraken to replace the order after the look in his eyes, but still, had anyone ever asked me an explanation before demonizing me? I have not ruled this fortress for over a year. I stepped down willingly and happily.

So, I'm off to visit the queen. Before I go, I grab the first dwarf I pass, Toiwat, and tell him, "We need pickaxes for every dwarf. Make them out of copper, we have a lot of that spare. Also axes. Lots of axes. No dwarf idle and no dwarf unarmed, that's what I say."
Toiwat seems dubious of my claims, but I reassure him, "Look, I have this tablet right here that says "Veloxyll. Overseer. By appointment of The Queen.' Now obviously 'I wouldn't have this unless I was the overseer, so I must be the Overseer. Now be a good dwarf and get those production orders sorted."
While he still looked to have some doubts, he seemed to take my word for it.

As I start ascending towards the Queen's tower-top apartment, I am given terrible news:

Dwarven weapons in the hands of someone not dwarven. This will end badly I'm sure.

How were these items left in a vulnerable position, we may never know. I vow to hasten my ascent of the tower so I can begin tackling these problems in earnest.
I make it to the top of the tower, only to find she's not in her room. I have to head down to the main entrance of the fortress before I find her, apparently inspecting the battlefield and cleanup efforts from up close.

As Veryslightlymad, Rodyle and our broker Frederico de Soya walk past, and w00tmonger throws up nearby, I begin my discussion with the Queen, "Your majesty, allow me to introduce myself. I'm glad we could meet somewhere public like this. I am Veloxyll, and I am overseeing this fortress for the next year."
She sounds skeptical, pointing out that she doesn't remember appointing me. I reassure her, "I come from the Rare Ship itself. As you can see by this tablet here, everything is in order. The Council for The Rare Ship wouldn't have signed this if it wasn't real, now would they?"
She agrees with my statement. Before she can raise any doubts I add, "Right, then it's settled. I am the overseer. Now before I leave you to queenly things and start work on the fortifications, is there anything you feel needs addressing?"
She says something about Ballista bolts. "Of course, your majesty. Good day."

While I ponder how to improve the fortifications, I notice that all the dwarves seem to be carrying things by hand. Feeling this is woefully inefficient, I order some wheelbarrows before I go to explore the lower reaches. Moose King, currently hauling Domattee's head somewhere, is the first dwarf I see so he gets the job of ordering them.

As I head down, I am informed merchants are here.
I get our broker to meet with them, maybe they'll have something useful for us. I also check on our nobility, since they have been known to order and forbid certain trades.

Weaponboy apparently did not recieve a new room when he got promoted to mayor.

I notice a large room that looks suitable, I reassign it from Ikubi Akius and apsuedonym to Weaponboy. Maybe Ikubi Akius or apsuedonym were the former mayor?

As I get to the forge level, I notice some of Oski's picks. They are simply masterful.

The other thing I notice is that we have Adamantite to work with. How did I not see it on the inventory lists.
There are a few pieces I am fairly comfortable we can get without unleashing Lorsith knows what on the fortress, though some of them may take some work.

Of course, if I'm wrong, the maddening stuff will kill us all, but what's a little danger to a dwarf? I will need to reorganise the military and make sure they are well equipped before this though. Which will give me time to drop Magma onto the water to free the other isolated deposit of adamantite as well.

I am called to the surface again however as something has happened...

One of the guards is throwing a tantrum (also a cage. I hope it doesn't hurt anyone when it lands).

Apparently she is sick of being on patrol. And her clothes rotted. I stand down the guards for now, so that hopefully none of our other soldiers throw a tantrum.

It would appear that Bronzestabbed, in the last siege, lost most of its clothing manufacturing abilities. I immediately conscript some dwarves to dig out a new area near the workshops which we will fill with clothing production buildings. Since if the captain of the guard's clothes have rotted away, I shudder to think of the status of the rest of the fortresses clothing. I will also see to it that our trader tries to buy all the cloth and dwarf sized clothing he can.

Thankfully, Vaga42Bond and Samuel were not under the cage when it crashed to the ground.

He was not the only one to become frustrated however. Another militiadwarf, SadBilly has the same complaints as Gnu.

I hope I stood the military down in time. The last thing I need is a military revolt.

I look if there is anything else I can do in the interrim. Checking our justice logs, there was apparently a MURDER recently. Perhaps this is part of the militia's problem. With 25 witnesses, it is an open and shut case. I order Qword convicted at once.

This seems to calm Gnu down, but SadBilly continues to be beligerant

At least for a day or so.

Qword is successfully imprisoned, hopefully this is the last murder during my term. The last thing I need is for dwarfs to start dying all over the place.

The sentence, by the way, is a very modest 200 days in prison.

While reviewing the military, I also notice that The Golden Barbs are short several dwarves. I decide that now is as good a time as any, and bring all squads up to a full 10 dwarfs.

Kzin joins The One Way Outs. Geekkake is promoted to lead the Golden Barbs, Senae, The Archivist and DoubleDonut also join the squad. Tyrant joins The Voxel Squad. SilentDwarf, Slashie and Phuzzy join The Lovely Treaties. Magner, my wife, joins The Walled Skies. The Bronze Delights welcome Ugly Ducklett, Tias and Rawkking. And The Mountainous Bows gain Disproportionation. Though I am still letting them have a few weeks leave before I resume training. I will also order a set of shields and training weapons created so they can learn their craft.

Esme informs me she needs a break because she is injured. I tell her to make her way to the hospital if it is that bad.

I don't know if she'll listen. I make sure our chief medical dwarf is not otherwise engaged regardless.

While I wait for the room to be cleared for the Clothiers, I am told of masterpieces being created. A sure sign my orders are being followed. One of the honey bees takes offence to Samuel, and stings him.

More work for the good doctor.

Our trader manages to trade with the merchants, selling spoils of war and lead crafts for large quantities of cloth. The new clothes workshops will require dwarves, I grab 14 brave souls to start tailoring. With the room cut out, I can now designate the new workshops too.

Once they clear the stones out and get set up, it should be quite homey for our craftsdwarves.
Our broker, Fredrico de Soya now free of his trading duties. Synthorange. LLSix. Pookum. Kennel. Dirty Frank. Rurik. Terrorstorm. Frankosity. GrittyBeard. Oski. Kaboom. Pokey. Brougal. These dwarves will form the cornerstone of our new dwarven clothing industry.

Shortly after this, I am forced to call the militia to arms. An ambush sees a bolt whiz by Male Man's head. I have no choice but to call upon our dwarven fighters to fend off the vile goblins

Our chief medical dwarf, Markus_cz and the peasant Gbuchold are also outside! Accursed goblins! I must attend now to the fortress's defense!
