Yeah, all the nice comments made me feel super guilty for sort of fizzling a bit. This is my first LP, and they sort of re-inspired me to put a good finish on the whole deal. I definitely could not have done it without Leperfish, he's really great at running an LP and keeping folks going. So be sure to thank him as well for putting this all together and herding us volunteers around for everyone's entertainment.

I would just like to point out that it appears this is something like her 3rd or 4th coffin (not all assigned in-game), and she had at least 1 slab already, too. I am sure she appreciates all the Heeding of her well being in the afterlife, especially given her status as a pile of ash that was probably blown away shortly after the fateful Battle of the Giant Flaming Turkey. It's something like an eye tooth, or her journal, being buried. Or someone else's.

Alternatively, they're taking every precaution to avoid a repeat performance. Given her thing about the Murk, that may not be quite the dumb idea it sounds. A Murky Ash Zombie Overseer would be a terrible thing to listen to.

This morning, the wretched sickness that had consumed my being and forced me into recluse had finally receded. I cursed The Enemy cheerfully, thankful that my remedies had once again proven their value.

Feeling as if I would be able to stomach a meal (once I'd drank enough booze for a human army, of course) I walked upstairs and picked up the letters my assistant had been collecting during my illness. One in particular caught my eye. It was packaged in a most official looking envelope, and read thusly:

To the Esteemed Dwarf Sky Shadowing,

I have the great Honor of informing you, as a Servant of Her Majesty the Queen of The Rare Ship, that you have been Selected by Procedure to Lead the Fortress of Bronzestabbed for the next calendar year.

Please return your reply within two weeks should you accept the Duties and Honor of Overseership.

By the Authority of the Queen,
Leperfish

A thrill of excitement went through my veins, though in hindsight that may have been glorious booze setting in. Finally, The Plan could come to fruition! "When did this arrive?" I asked my assistant.

"About three weeks ago, sire."

I am told my scream of outrage could be heard on the surface.

In other news, I now must seek a new assistant, since my old one... was found not worthy of holding the position anymore.

Log of Acting Overseer Leperfish

1st Limestone

LeJackal has submitted his final report to Her Majesty Sankis this morning. The Queen has informed me that aside from the ‘normal eccentricities,’ that LeJackal had served admirably as Overseer and that She reaffirmed that She would continue to bring in an experienced Overseer to operate Bronzestabbed in the future.

Unfortunately, it seems that the Overseer we had carefully selected a month ago, Sky Shadowing, never replied to Her Majesty’s offer. I asked if it would be possible to give LeJackal an extension, but Her Majesty said that She already broached the subject with the outgoing overseer, and he adamantly refused. He said that an overseer serving at the same fortress for more than a year consecutively “violated every regulation and professional standard.” The Queen has assured me that She has selected another candidate we talked about-Jarl Phoebos and She has received word that word that he is on his way to Bronzestabbed as we speak. Until he arrives, Her Majesty has asked that I be in charge of implementing the new overseer’s initial instructions (that came back with his acceptance of the job) as well as handling any emergencies that may crop up.

In short, She was asking me to be Overseer again, however briefly. I was hesitant - Bronzestabbed was vastly different from the way it was when I first arrived here. Moreover, it was clear that I would be severely limited in what I could and could not do. I told these concerns to the Queen, and Her Majesty said that it was precisely because I understood that my power was limited that She wished me to serve in the intern - another Overseer might see an opportunity to interject their own personal touch onto what should be another dwarf’s record. While I had more faith in my fellow Ex-Overseer’s to understand the issue as well as I do, I decided against arguing the point and accepted the temporary appointment.

I returned to my office with an assistant carrying the incoming Overseer’s plans. I laid out the plans in order to see what the Overseer’s priorities were.

I...did not like what I saw.

The first instruction from Jarl Phoebos was to requisition the ‘house’ constructed by the former-overseer TildeATH (where is that rascal anyway? LeJackal was rather evasive about the whereabouts of the two children he seemed to believe were saboteurs.) Since the quarters still were listed as being owned by Queen Sankis, I almost refused to file the paperwork if not for a note written in by Her Majesty that She had reviewed the instruction and had no objection, saying that Her quarters were more than adequate. Still, the arrogance of the order did not sit well with me. If only that had been the only issue.

I rolled out a large parchment and saw plans for a vast construction project to be built next to the requisitioned quarters (disrupting the aesthetics of the building in the process, not that I particularly cared). I had no idea what the purpose of this building was-it had all the hallmarks of a defensive structure, but why a citadel was needed in the heart of Bronzestabbed I had no idea.

Then came the note from the Overseer-Select, which...well I’ll just quote the dwarf himself (or is it a her? The gender of our Overseer was strangely left out).

Jarl Phoebos posted:

To the architect reading this message:

The structure shown here is the center-piece of my administration of Bronzestabbed. I enlisted the help of a boutique consulting firm and it is important that their design be followed. Furthermore, the structure must be efficient and architectually sound, which I will entrust to you to ensure.

I look forward to meeting you and seeing the progress you have made in construction.

So, I have to stick to this design, but I’m also responsible for it being architecturally sound. Wonderful.

Most of the other instructions are not as bewildering-just orders to dig exploratory tunnels. There is one order, though, which I outright refuse to follow. I take the parchment ordering the excavation of additional adamantine down to the furnace and toss it in. If he (she? ah gently caress it I’ll stick with ‘he’ until I find out otherwise) asks, I’ll tell him that part of his message was damaged beyond reading.

If he wants to drat this fortress and everyone in it, then he should at least die horribly with the rest of us.

2nd Limestone

I give the instructions for building the new hall. Already, I see problems with the design. While the new Overseer’s message gave contradictory messages, I err in favor of a more proper design. I’m beginning to think that this Jarl Phoebos won’t notice.

As work begins, I consult with the reports and notes Sankis and I used when we first selected Sky Shadowing to be overseer. Jarl Phoebos was one of the other candidates we considered, and our initial impression was that he was the best candidate. However, there were a number of omissions from his records, while Sky Shadowing’s file was complete and proper. In addition, while SkyShadowing’s career was above question, there had been one investigation of Jarl Phoebos by Her Majesty’s agents. The investigation found no proof of wrongdoing or impropriety. At the time, the Queen and I decided to select the less risky candidate, but it seems that when he fell through Sankis forgot about the issue with Jarl Phoebos.

I meet with my old friend Internet Kraken over drinks to discuss my concerns and whether it would be appropriate to ask Her Majesty to reconsider the appointment. After some thought, Internet Kraken said that as odd as the case may be, there really isn’t any new evidence that something is seriously problematic with our new Overseer. To question the appointment at this point is to question the Queen’s ability to make a decision on Her own. Internet Kraken’s advise has Wisdom, and so I tell him I will keep my concerns to myself for now. He tells me that he will do the same.

6th Limestone

Nemo2342 and the other miners of the fort make good progress in carving out the new structure. I also give the order to begin smoothing the stone. The outer wall is also to be prepared with fortifications, which, again, I do not see the point of. As far as I can see, this building will lack the sophistication of LeJackal’s escape capsule, and so acting as a last holdout does not seem to be the purpose. I suppose I will not find out until Jarl Phoebos arrives.

10th Limestone

Ibuki Akins has ended her mandate. Whatever that may be. It really has been a long time since I paid attention to the politics of this place. Which is why I was supportive of the move to select outsiders for the job-the Noble Works is too important to leave to the whims of local politics.

13th Limestone

Looking over the plans again, I see there was a request for a summary to be taken at the first of the month. Somehow I had overlooked this most basic procedure. I curse my rustiness and produce an accounting as of today. It will have to do.

I am also informed that the merchants from Saquerpesor will be leaving soon. I trust that LeJackal had the matter fully taken care of before leaving office. Despite having held this responsibility before, the sheer size Bronzestabbed has grown to is far beyond anything I could have imagined. I keep my focus on the Jarl Phoebos’ citadel. It seems that he has been sending additional messages, inquiring about making the citadel a two or even three story structure. Of course, we have already carved in an entrance assuming it will only be one story, so so much for that! Still, I order the smoothing of the outside passages to halt.

19th Limestone

I hear some vague news about Nil Bastionhall withdrawing from society. I’m certain she’ll find what she needs.

Indeed there are quite a few events today. T-man has given birth to a son. She and her husband Lippo name the child Clamps McGraw

21st Limestone

Nil Bastionhall has claimed a Magma Forge. I look forward to seeing what she creates.

22nd Limestone

A new message from the incoming Overseer. This time instructing that Balistae be placed at each of the the towers!

There’s no doubt in my mind that this building is meant to repel a serious threat. What threat in particular, though, I cannot say. There are also some changes to the rear emplacements. Frankly I don’t get why those are even there. If the Overseer wanted to defend the back of this structure, then would it not make the most sense not to dig a back passage in the first place?

I need a drink.

23rd Limestone

Tragedy befell Bronzestabbed today. One that could have probably been avoided in the hands of a more competent Overseer. The High Much “Slick Slinky” died of dehydration while he was hospitalized.

I’m still trying to understand how this problem could have arisen. But the more I think about it, the more I reminisced on how things used to be so much simpler when it was just me and six pioneers making up Bronzestabbed.

25th Limestone

Work on the Fort-within-a-Fort continues. While I have my doubts about it’s purpose and the intent of our new Overseer, I will be very much relieved when he gets here. Bronzestabbed has changed. I’m not sure I could handle a year running this place now.

1st Sandstone

I make sure to avoid the mistake I made last month and take a tally of Bronzestabbed’s resources at the end of this month.

EDIT: Yeah, I broke the tables. Sorry. :negative:

I'm going to clean up my screenshots so it doesn't look so bad.

EDIT2: On further thought, I'll leave these as timg's, and be sure the screenshots are the right size in future updates.

Next year she will probably just prop the ashes of Bad Munki up on a throne and tell everyone that is the new overseer. And they will be perfectly fine with it, because they're all blind as naked mole dogs. Not me though, I've got a plan. I just need a chance to put it into action. TildeATH and I found a small stockpile of food and booze. It is enough to stave off death for several more months I think. It is just postponing the inevitable.

It is very hot in here. All I can see out the windows is the red glow of magma. I can feel its heat under the floor of the lowest level, and above the ceiling of the top floor. I know not what devilry LeJackal employed to keep the heat from cooking us alive in here but I wish he had not. The least that monster could have done is given us a quick death, but he had to do this instead.

The humans described a horrible underworld where the evil ones would go upon death. This tomb exceeds even their vivid descriptions. The heat is constant and the humidity unbearable. I know now that there is no escape. No rescue coming. We are submerged in the magma now and no access is possible without first draining it. Even if that could be done, it would take many months and we do not have the supplies to survive that.

It is funny. Until you are trapped, you don't realise how closed in everything is.
