25th Felsite Our military files back in after the glorious slaughter. The goblins were massacred, and hopefully they have now realized that Dwarven might can never falter before goblin arms. 26th Felsite Lazy Trebuchet has given birth to a healthy baby girl. She is her second child after the late ZeeToo. I send congratulation notes to father Schir. I am too tired to congragulate him personally. I hope he will understand. Brougal is heard complaining that the new birth overshadows her coming-of-age ceremony. She has already shown skill with plants, and lacks the focus necessary for the military, so I keep her as a planter. 28th Felsite Hoomani has come of age as well. She was among my first migrants. She is strong, but quick to tire, so I place her under the tutelage of Gnu Sheriff In Town as a part of Gnu Order. (somehow I failed to Screenshot this one, My bad!) I watch the sun rise early the next morning, the heat of the outdoors uncomfortable, unable to sleep. I placed JollyPubJerk's monument, and still the dreams continue. I am beginning to feel that my rooms are haunted. 1st Hematite The Queen Sankis summons me to her Royal tower, and decrees that no ballista bolts are to be exported beyond our lands, to preserve the secrets of their making from the enemy. I do not understand, but I must obey. I issue the order for new rooms to be hollowed out for me down by the forges. Drink helps, but I do not feel that it is fitting for me. I will work myself to exhaustion with my own personal magma forges and sleep the sleep of the dead. 7th Hematite I was in the barracks of The One-Way Outs when I swore I could hear a whisper from the eastern wall. Were the nights not enough? Was I being tormented during the day now? Internet Kraken pulled me away as I began beating on the wall screaming, and gave me a stiff drink. He mentioned the wall had been whispering for several days now. I ordered it ripped down so we could discover what evil lay beyond it. 9th Hematite Atmok Ik ripped the wall apart to discover the rotted corpse of a dwarf. Markus_cz examined it and proclaimed it to be the corpse of Kelli, who had went missing last Granite. LeJackal's delusions about the children are his issue, and I cannot prove that they are dead, or that they were not even innocent of the crimes accused. What I can be sure of is that he is responsible for the death of this dwarf, and I will include it in my upcoming report to the Queen. 10th Hematite Kennel informs me that they now know more about echindas. I respond that is wonderful, but keep the disgusting things away from me. 12th Hematite As Kelli's rotten body is laid to rest, I swear I can hear a voice whisper "thank you" in my ear. My sleep this night is restful and dreamless. 13th Hematite Leperfish brings me a missive from the Queen. She has acknowledged my authority as Overseer to bring charges against another dwarf, but being that he was Overseer during the times of his crimes, and thus invested with authority by her, she is the one who holds his fate. The trial is set for the end of the month. 16th Hematite Tonight is my first night in my new quarters, and it is as restful as the last few nights have been. The engravers of this fortress are beyond compare. There is one particular engraving in my bedroom that is very well done. I almost feel as if its eyes are watching me. 20th Hematite Turnpikelad has taken his first steps today. His parents, Penguingo and Sighence are beaming with happiness as I treat them to a round. I feel the gesture is appreciated despite the fact that all booze is free. 27th Hematite Ikubi Akius is angry that we never got around to producing that one high boot. In a fit of anger, he confronts lunnrais in the fortress, and asks what she did to upset lunnrais so the planter did not fulfill her ONE request, then grabs Vox Nihili and orders 4 Hammerstrikes to the poor dwarf. I attempt to intercede, as lunnrais is a planter in civilian life, and a hero of Bronzestabbed in the military, but the mayor hears none of it. Ikubi Akius then states that due to the shortage of high boots for our soldiers, they are banned as an export good. 28th Hematite I am summoned to the Concert Hall for the beginning of the Trial. A crowd of dwarves stand around and in the galleries as Sankis, Vox Nihili, and Leperfish take position at the table. I am beckoned forward by Vox Nihili to begin my case. "Your Majesty," I begin. "LeJackal, during his time as Overseer, clearly harmed The Rare Ships. It may not have been his will, but one way or another, two children were imprisoned in a fortress of magma, the good dwarf Kelli was barricaded off and died a miserable, sober death, and LeJackal designed a deathtrap to ensure his vision of 'justice' would remain uncompromised for all eternity. Clearly, LeJackal, either through idiocy or villainy, decided to turn dwarf against dwarf, when this fortress must be united in strength and unity! We are like a weapon- one tiny crack can grow until a blade breaks. LeJackal caused many cracks, and they are growing." The blade of Bronzestabbed must be reforged. LeJackal's tainted metal must be cast out, so we may be as strong and glorious as an adamantine short sword." I step back and look to my opposition to begin his defense.

Somewhere around the middle of Hematite, 245 It's been a rough few weeks. After being accosted by that abomination I'd almost gotten the nerve to head back to the pastures, then a goblin jumps out of nowhere at me. He tried cutting my purse but that's been empty for my whole life, everyone knows the Gods abhor coinage. I keep bits of malachite in there and pretty yellow things though, I was glad the little bastard decided running was more important. So after all of that I thought my luck had to turn soon right? No dwarf goes through so much crap without finding his bit of rum along the way right? It seems like it was only a few days before I heard something that made my blood run cold. How?! How could they be so foolish? Some things aren't meant to be trained. Or frankly even exist. I'm going to find myself a whole cask of rum and stay far away from the animal pens.

13th Felsite, 245 Hello diary! Long time no write. A lot has certainly happened in our modest fort, but to be honest there's not much in my life to write about. It's crutch-ey. Practicing crutchcraft has been my number one occupation after foolishly hunting for that giant olm. It would've been so much meat and I'd made a name for myself in the fort! But alas, I made myself a crutchdwarf instead. Though as I've stated, I've polished crutchwielding into somewhat of an art, so I'm more like a crutchcraftsdwarf than a simple crutchdwarf. The point is: I'm darn good at moving around with my crutch! So good in fact that if the fortress should fall for the goblin siege that showed up today, I'll be able to either fight or flee as effectively as any civilian dwarf (note: not sure how effective that is). Our fortress has certainly survived many sieges, but you never know if one will be different. 25th Felsite, 245 Hahaha, who am I kidding? Those goblins were absolutely massacred. Why do they keep trying? 12th Hematite, 245 Strange things have happened in this fort for years, like that business with children for instance. It has to be power politics though, since one of the missing kids was the Toddlerseer. Apparently he crossed LeJackal somehow when he was Overseer and now current Overseer is after LeJackal. Overseeing is becoming a bloody affair, I wonder if we'll have a year of four Overseers at some point? But even though remarkable that's just politics and not really strange. Unlike Kelli's ghost dying of thirst and coming back as a ghost of a ghost. I wonder what's Ugath up to.

Loden Taylor's catalog is perfect Bronzestabbed-readin' stuff, just for example. Mortal Sword posted:Wait, so I actually replaced you as militia commander? I'm not certain, but I think it's possible the game records someone becoming and being dismissed as a militia commander every time they go on or off duty. If I'm wrong, then it could have been at some point when he was injured temporarily, or something. It's even possible to get something like that recorded in the logs (and thus the permanent omniscient racial memory of all dwarvenkind) just by accidentally hitting the wrong keystroke in the nobles or military menu. Even if the game is paused and you immediately put them back in charge before you unpause, the game may decide that counts.

1st Malachite. "...Innocent." The words of Queen Sankis sank my heart like an Obsidian stone through magma. LeJackal took the stage, proclaimed everything he did made the "fortress safer", said I could not prove Kelli's death was his fault, and that the two children were Elvish spies. As for JollyPubJerk, he launched into a tirade against me, proclaiming that his death was my fault, not his, for I was the one who failed to Heed his warnings and ordered the lever pulled. He says nothing of the fact that HE was the one who TRAPPED the lever in such a way in the first place. I don't know if the Queen believed him, but she said sealing the children in a vault was not a crime, they could not be proven dead (though they surely must be), and Kelli may have done it to himself. LeJackal has publicly humiliated me. I have two months left of overseership. I will humiliate him. I will. 2nd Malachite I grudgingly order the guards that LeJackal's house arrest is over, and he is free to wander the fortress once more. I have a plan... 3rd Malachite More animals going wild. Perhaps I was too hard on the animal trainers before. We have so many animals, perhaps it is not their fault anymore. Perhaps we just have too many animals. 6th Malachite Terror storm, one of the more recent migrants, is sent by the senior animal trainers to inform me that they now are more skilled at training kangaroos. My vendetta with the animal trainers is over, I do believe. Their issues at the beginning were sorted out, and were yet another issue of my predecessor that he will have to pay for. 10th Malachite A group of migrants have ventured to Bronzestabbed, the word of our great Victory last season reaching the Mountainhomes. I welcome them by family: Tharandwarf the Weaponsmith His wife Doc Aquatic the Herbalist. Jamsque the Tanner. His wife w00tmonger, cousin of OhCrap, Corbeau, and Ajaxify. Their child gbuchold. Professor Bling the Siege Engineer, alone. gowby the Cheese Maker, joining daughter Saoritficis Dorf Dorfington the Fish Disector, alone. 14th Malachite I have finally discovered where all the 'missing' animals are, and the competency of the animal trainers is once again called into question. Apparently, the animals are right where they always were- in their cages. And when the trainers gazed inside their cages, seeing no living animals, they assumed they had escaped, not looking down, where the rotting corpses lay on the floor. Down in the auditorium, Mad Wack barreled into me as I entered. Not even apologizing, he jumped up with undwarvish ability and sprinted as fast as he could. Following him, he entered a mason's workshop and began clearing a work space. We have another Mood. 18th Malachite It is odd, you know, that it was so hard to figure out exactly how to give LeJackal what he deserves. There are many dwarves in this fortress who are uncomfortable with the idea of two dwarven children trapped in a stone construct. Several of them are aiding me in preparing to punish LeJackal. I dare not engrave their names here, for my reign is drawing close to an end and I want any vengeance to come at me and me alone. Suffice to say that they are doing their jobs well. 21st Malachite We know now a few things about weasels, apparently. I know not of what use they are, being useless in all ways, but at least they are less disgusting than echindas. 22nd Malachite Mzbundifund eagerly asked me if I expected more goblins in the coming season while I was relaxing in the Queen's Statue Garden. He said he was eager to get more kills with his crossbow, which he seems to have taken a liking to. 24th Malachite Mad Wack continues to run all over the fortress without Heeding anyone, building up a small store of malachite and steel in his claimed workshop. I am eager to see what his inspirtation creates. 28th Malachite The plan for LeJackal is in place. It is a bit fitting that he will be hoisted, in a way, by his own creation. The dreams have returned. They approve of what I am doing, I think. Because in the end, all we are, is ash, and in life we are at the mercy of fowl beasts. In the fires, this fortress must be refined. Bad steel must be strengthened. And if this is what it takes for LeJackal to understand... that is what I will do. At any cost. Even to myself.
