This course is your opportunity to see how we fly fish small to medium-sized streams, tapping into our 60+ years experience and knowledge. It’s like spending a week with us in many different small stream situations and scenarios. Gear - we walk you through why we use certain rods, reels, lines, leaders, tippet, footwear, waders, packs, ballcaps, sunglasses, nets, indicators and all other tackle we find essential. Casting - You don't have to have a perfect cast with definitive accuracy to be effective in these waters. There are, however, certain aspects to a cast that are critical to apply in order to have consistent success. Casting - The Rolling Lift: Consistency is king to casting on all small to medium-sized trout streams - especially those with bushy sections. Here we introduce the rolling lift cast which makes up 90% of all the casts we consistently do on these streams. This section also discusses the reason why using longer leader on small streams is so important to presenting your fly respectably. Casting - Bow & Arrow Cast DEEP DIVE Casting - Raised, Cross-Body Reach Cast Casting - Casting Over Casting - Casting Lanes: Understanding your best open casting lane in a bushy section of a small stream comes with some experience and you won't always nail it. However, if you keep having a go you'll inherently take note of where your hazards are and work within them often using the middle of the creek or the canopy above to get your fly where you want it. Lateral Line - Part 1 & Part 2: You will learn what the lateral line is and how a trout uses its lateral line within a trout stream to alert them to both danger and to food. You will also learn that understanding a lateral line means that you can deliberately draw a fish out from overhead cover to feed on your fly. Water temperature and flows have a huge impact on how narrow or wide a trout's feeding window is. You may be surprised to learn just how far a fish is willing to travel to eat. Finding Your Trout Stream - Part 1, 2 & 3: We DEEP DIVE DISSECTION Developing A Mindset & Plan - Part 1 & 2: The factors that play a huge role in our decision-making of how to prepare to go and fish a certain piece of water. These include weather, seasons, time of year, water flows/levels and likely hatches. We talk about taking those factors and making calculated projections. You will learn that our mindset is: every individual piece of structure, water type or specific fish is a project and we break down that project in order to be successful in our approach to fishing it.
