Purcell Marian powers past CHCA

Hyde Park got a good taste of football as CHCA and Purcell Marian hooked up for a conference battle on Friday night.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The week’s Blitz 5 Game of the week made a stop at Purcell Marian as they played host to the CHCA Eagles in a Miami Valley Conference battle. The Cavaliers and Eagles both came into the showdown with 1-0 conference records and looked to move to the top of the standings all by themselves. Two of the best offensive teams in the conference showed their defensive chops in this affair. After a tough played game it was Purcell Marian who pulled away with a 29-6 victory on Friday night.

The fireworks started from the very beginning. After deferring to the second half, CHCA pulled the onside kick on the opening kickoff and recovered it to grab the early momentum. Three plays later they were in the endzone as running back Brayden Mitchum went eight yards for the opening score. Purcell would block the extra point as CHCA held a 6-0 lead.

The Eagles’ defense was impressive early on as well. After bending a bit on Purcell’s first two drives of the night, CHCA did not break and were able to twice turn the Cavaliers away on downs. The offense failed to convert however but the defense was up to the task again. After the Cavaliers stole some momentum with a fake punt, a fumble stopped their drive short as CHCA’s Blake Powell recovered the fumble.

Purcell would finally get some things going and it started with their defense. After the fumble, they backed the Eagles up and made a big play for a safety, cutting the lead to 6-2. After the ensuing free kick, the Cavaliers got their offense going for the first time of the night. After a solid drive, Jayel Harris scampered across the goal line for a 14-yard score and a 9-6 advantage. Both defenses closed the half strong and held each other scoreless for the remainder of the half.

CHCA started the half with the football and went on solid drive down the field. Inside the redzone, the Cavaliers came up big when Jahere Gillium picked off a pass at the goal line to stop the drive. It was at this moment that Purcell Marian seized the momentum in the second half. The offense would take the field and get aggressive right away. They pushed the ball down the field quickly and Harris capped the drive with a 16-yard rushing score to extend the lead.

The Cavalier defense kept their stingy ways and turned CHCA over on downs on the next possession and came away with great field position. Several plays later and it was Harris again, bolting through the defense for a 43-yard score to blow the game open. The home team had everything going right and a 22-6 lead after three quarters.

Purcell kept control of the ball game throughout the second half as their offense got going and the defense continued their strong performance on the night. In the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers went on a strong drive that essentially put the game away. A hard and physical run game aided efficient passes as they moved down the field. Penalties moved them into second and goal from the 45-yard line and a big run broke the backs of the Eagles.

Purcell protected home field with a 29-6 victory.
