| 01/28/2024 | Chehalem Ridge | 8.23 | 625 | 3.81 | First hike of the year! I went up to Chehalem Ridge Nature Park and hiked a few of the trails - Woodland, Timber, Ayeekwa, Witches Butter and Chehalem Ridge trails. I forgot to record the temperatures that day. Averaged 2.9 mph moving pace. It was a great day weatherwise, with no rain. |
| 02/04/2024 | WRT Jones Creek West | 5.84 | 565 | 2.8 | I drove out to the Jones Creek trailhead off Hwy 6 and hiked west on the Wilson River Trail to "Wilson Falls" in an out-n-back trip. 31° at the start, misty-foggy but no rain. I kept a pretty good pace, 2.7 mph average moving speed. About an hour into the hike most of the fog burned off and I was greeted with some blue skies among the treetops. Water everywhere in this section of the WRT, and I took more than a few videos and pics. It was 44° at the end of the hike. Trail was in pretty good shape, only one tree blocking that I removed. |
| 02/18/2024 | Elk Creek Trail | 7.52 | 1829 | 3.18 | First time up Elk Creek Trail this year. Started off with light rain and 37° temperature. Hit snow at about 1900' elevation (about 2 miles up), and turned around about 1/4 mile from the top because my foot was bothering me. Otherwise it was a great choice - no one else was up there the entire time, the slushy snow on the trail really lit everything up (even in the cloudy, rainy conditions). The rain let up about 12:30pm so the last mile or so was rain-free. I went slow (2.2 mph avg pace). Brought the microspikes, handy in the steep slushy parts. The new Merrell boots are performing well, especially the soles - super traction on all surfaces. |
| 2/24/2024 | WRT Jones Creek East | 7.06 | 1270 | 3.18 | It's been awhile since I last hiked this section of the WRT. After this hike I think I've section hiked the whole thing in the past 12 months. Not a big deal, and nothing like the two times i've done the whole trail as a day hike in a single day. But yesterday was a lot of fun. 38° at the start of the hike, 53° at the end. Didn't see many people until the return hike, when i encountered groups of trail runners and shuttle hikers getting in some trail time. For me it was great therapy after a hectic week. I wore the Helikon-Tex Windrunner windshirt for the first time and really liked it! Dries quickly, yet blocks wind and helps hold in warmth. The water was flowing all over the place, streams were running strong. The morning started off misty and cloudy but all of that burned off to blue skies. Looking forward to the longer days of summer when maybe I'll get in some longer treks, but this winter "training" is a heck of a lot of fun. |
| 3/31/2024 | Keenig Crk WRT hike | 11.09 | 1965 | 4.9 | With sunny weather in this early spring I decided to finish out the month with a hike. Keenig Creek to Wolf Creek was my plan, and it worked out well. I averaged 2.4 mph overall. 36° at the start of the hike, but I quickly shed the KUIU vest I'd been wearing (after 1.6 miles, at the Cedar Butte Rd crossing). Wolf Creek is a great destination, and there's still a decent bench near the bridges to take a break on. I enjoyed that spot for a few minutes before heading back. My Merrill boots are working out well, and the Helikon-Tex Windrunner shirt makes a great second layer in spring weather. Super day, I felt pretty good throughout the hike and after. |
