Did you know that once an animal has any degree of training it can be safely slaughtered at a butchershop? It may be worth keeping things that can eventually be trained into war animals (and especially useful animals like giant cave spiders) around, but most wildlife is useless. In a mature fortress wholesale slaughter of useless livestock sometimes helps a bit with FPS too.

1st Galena Mad Wack begins construction of his Artifact. Despite my personal disagreements with LeJackal, several of his constructions were good and honorable- likely an attempt to cover up his evil intentions for the children. Should it not have a purpose, I shall place it in the Crackmaster Cultural Vault. 2nd Galena It had been several months since the last sighting, but once again the familiar cry goes up across the outer walls- "MURK!" I climb to the top of the Sword of Destiny and watch the murk. Unfortunately, this murk is drifting close to some of the outer cage traps- from where come our over-abundance of newly dead animals. These cages are filled with goblins. When the murk clears, the goblins remain normal. I am confused- what sorcery fills these cages? 3rd Galena Frederico de Soya lets out a shout of anger when one of his masterpieces is improperly mishandled and lost. Shortly after, I am informed that one of Fitzy Fitz is also lost. Frederico de Soya lets out a second shout when yet another is lost. I had ordered several useless objects, of which I will say no more, discarded, and ordered them discarded into an open section of the magma pit. Perhaps somehow they were thrown into there? A large cloud of smoke indicates probably. Fitzy Fitz is, unfortunately, gone to the grave, so I only need check up on Frederico de Soya. He is in high spirits still, so I let the matter go. 4th Galena A shout in the Queen's Statue Garden is heard as Peas is relaxing. Suddenly, a spirit that he identifies as his deceased wife Pleky McDwarfson rises behind him. A memorial had been engraved, but never placed. I order it placed near the workshops. 6th Galena Mad Wack emerges from the workshop carrying a malachite armor stand of sublime beauty. It is almost a shame to cover it up with armor, so I decide to place it in the dining hall to inspire dwarves as to our mission. 8th Galena More murk has been sighted- this time to the south of us. I was under the hopes that the murk was limited to our northern borders, but sadly this is not the case. We watch as a nearby skunk investigates the cloud, but it fortunately does not enter it, merely content to watch it drift south out of sight. 9th Galena Nobody has seen the miner Konpeito in a week. I do not know where he could have gone, and am confused. 11th Galena A second dwarf has gone missing, this one Wadayamean, a mechanic. I sense LeJackal's hand in this, for my... retribution required both miners and mechanics. Loyalists of the traitor are killing randomly, hoping to eliminate my supporters. The dreams cry for purging fire, for the burn. I do not listen. The crack is spreading. The blade is breaking. But its source is LeJackal. At least I can put one soul to rest, and ease a husband's heart. 14th Galena We are once again out of adamantine. I would love to mine more, but I will not risk it. My year is almost over without large catastrophe. 17th Galena Humans have arrived! I admit to a slight amount of disappointment- had they arrived earlier I would have traded with them, but that duty shall be left to my successor. 21st Galena T-man has been talking fondly of a cat that has taken a liking to him. The dreams get bad. They scream at me. Time is running out. I have a week, and my vengeance may not take place. LeJackal may have won. My noble Stinthad- how big he's gotten since we arrived here- looks at me when I awaken. I wonder if I am screaming too in my sleep. 23rd Galena Esme has given birth to a healthy baby boy named Octahedron. I congragulate father Kennel and apologize for my animal-training incompetence. I hope I am forgiven. 25th Galena I awaken at night from a particularly vivid dream carrying one of my adamantine shortswords. I can still hear the dreams crying out for vengeance. I am horrified. I have never been a military dwarf. I know my target was LeJackal. I now know what I must do. 28th Galena Two soldiers, masked, bring LeJackal to the one place I feel safe- the top of the Sword of Destiny, as the sun rises. "Overseer," he greets me coldly. "I owe you an apology, LeJackal," I said. He looked dumbfounded. "All this time I thought you were responsible for your actions, and then I found myself taking actions I would have found undwarvenly. "I have never been a military dwarf, I have said it many times. A few nights ago, I woke to find myself armed, voices in my head screaming for vengeance. I was terrified of my own actions. "When I came here, I did not believe that a dwarf could arise as a ghost. I barely believed the tales of zombies and undead. Now I know better. The strain of Overseership weakened my mind, and when I saw JollyPubJerk engulfed by lava... it broke, in a way. All this time, I thought the fortress was cracking, and YOU were the cause, when I realize, the steel of my mind was cracking. "I have been plagued by terrible dreams, and when I awoke to find myself trying to kill you, I realized what they were doing. They were trying to get me to commit a terrible crime, one that would result in me being removed from the Overseership. "I remember the words of GrabbinPeels, and I believe that a... force... may be at work, one that is trying to gain power for its own ends. Is that force good? Is it evil? I cannot say, but it is trying to get Overseers to resign, to die, to be cast down. It has been patient, waiting before, but I believe that it has tried to seize power many times, and every time it has failed, its patience has worn thin. I believe it may have run out. "It manipulated me. I built an exact replica of the second lever room, and there, I was going to torment you, force you to spill your darkest secrets to me, and force you to fight one of our prisoners. You are not a military dwarf either. It would have been a bitter struggle. I believe when I failed, it tried to force me to kill you as a punishment- my execution would have pleased it. "I still find your actions during your term criminal, but you were tried, and I shall bend to the Queen's judgement. Your motivations are your own. Were you affected by the force? Only you know. Who is behind it? Is it our enemies, those who interfere with death? These things will be answered, I am sure. Whatever it is, it turned me against you, and will likely threaten future Overseers as well." "So I offer a truce. You do not need to accept it now. All you need to do is inform me in the future. I shall take no further actions against you. I hope, should the next Overseer bend their knee to the force, we can work to stop its plans. But your will is your own." I chuckled. "Maybe this is all in my mind. Maybe there IS no 'force'. Maybe it's benevolent. I don't know. I expect we'll find out, won't we?" With that, I left the summit of the Sword, leaving a stunned LeJackal in my wake, as the sun once again peeked over the horizon, and my term as Overseer finished. I'll admit, it's nice to be able to sit back, wait for Leperfish to call for Overseers and not have to worry about it. I tried to plant a few seeds in this update and I'm looking forward to seeing if future Overseers run with them, and how. It's been a fun ride, these last two weeks. I never thought a year in DF could take so long. Anyone have any feedback on the year, the ending, anything? This last update is probably the one I'm most proud of, lots of details. I couldn't carry out my 'vengeance' upon LeJackal, but in a way I think the ending tied up some of my loose ends better than that would have. One of my primary reasons for joining SA was I wanted to be an Overseer, so it's nice to finally get the chance to do so. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did (Bad Munki's enjoyment probably stems mostly from the fact it's now over and the Roll will be coming up again).

Another excellent turn from Sky Shadowing. Good job! We got timely, quality updates for a reasonable period, clearly lots of people enjoyed it, you can't really ask for more. But I will! It's time for our Call for Overseers! As usual, please sign up using the google docs form here. You can look at the current signup list here. Please sign up only if you have time to undertake a roughly three week project that will consume several hours of your time every day or two. The fortress is very large, quite complicated, and has over 275 dwarfs living in it (give or take the odd missing dwarf). There's a lot to keep track of, and just taking screenshots and cropping them for one update can take a couple of hours, nevermind actually doing writing, editing, and you know, playing the game. Nevertheless, I'm asking overseers to produce a quality update every 48 hours, with the occasional 72-hour period being acceptable as long as it's not a habit. You don't have to play a full year if you don't want to, and I will cut you off if you seem to be going too slowly to manage a full year within a reasonable period of time. I'll make a random pick from applicants in approximately 24 hours from this post. Good luck!

Haha, I love how you ended your turn. The thread's inside joke of Munki not getting elected is actually leaking into the game and its plot. I actually have a lot of time the entire February and it would be fun to Oversee and to decrease Munki's chances at the roll. However I'm not sure this won't be too big a job for me, so I'll pass. e: Actually, imagine what happens if Bad Munki wins the roll? After the length of this entire joke his turn would feel truly special. And how'd he roleplay anyway? Maybe actually as some kind of force? Dear Journal, Apparently, it's time for the overseer selection process again. Campaign posters are EVERYWHERE. While one gets use to them after so many years here in Bronzestabbed, there was one very odd poster that caught my eye. This is a cat leather Overseership Campaign Poster. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with turtle shell and goblin bone. This object menaces with spikes of giant cave spider chitin, Native gold and Tower-cap. On the item is an image of Bad Munki in Phyllite. On the item is an image of the word MAGMA in turtle shell. The artwork relates to the candidacy of the dwarf ash pile at Bronzestabbed. I... Journal of "GrabbinPeels" Dolilnil, 245 The meetings in the dark have borne sudden fruit. LeJackal has been spared the Queen's Justice and I have been told by a brother close to the overseer that SkyShadowing himself has begun tread the path. The Munki does not act without caution. He is as a flow of molten rock: slow, inexorable, unstoppable. I have brought the brothers to my understanding, and last night placed the name in the box as I have done so for many years. The burned one is coming. I do not know if this will be the hour of his unveiling, but I will be patient. The fire burns, the fire consumes, but the fire is steady. We are creatures of rock and stone, we do not abide in the world above. There is no wind here. The flames do not flicker. They wait. ------ I guess since the overseer has brought me up a few times my weird Munki-cult dwarf is official Bronzestabbed canon. Journal of Former Toddlerseer TildeATH, 245 Pickled Tink doesn't believe me, and when I told my new friend, he said lots of people wouldn't believe it. But I'm not scared, because the voice that whispers to me through the wall is the same voice that the dwarf in the shadows had--the one who whispered to Da. I remember once when they were talking, and the voice hid in the shadows, and I pretended like I was asleep. He said to squeeze the Ugathers, to tap the Magma, to mine the Blue Metal. That voice, from the shadows... When Da left, I rushed over to see who it was, but when I pulled aside the cloak, there was nothing there but a pile of ash. He must have snuck away before I could see him. But I'm glad he's found me again. The Voice in the Shadow says he will be the Overseer. I'm sure he will be. I tell Pickled Tink but he doesn't heed my words. He laughs and asks when, but when I ask the voice, he just gets really frustrated and starts whispering lots of curses about some kind of ring that keeps him from becoming overseer. He says one day the ring will give him the overseership. I wonder what this ring looks like. I imagine it to be malachite, and menacing with sides of different numbers.

Unknown He sat up clutching at his throat in pain. It felt so hard to swallow. He just needed one drink to end the torment, just one to end the anguish. This was no way for a dwarf to have to die. Not like this. Not here. "Sit down and relax. The moment will pass soon enough." It should have surprised him to hear that voice. It should have surprised him when he turned and saw the woman sitting behind him. It did not. "You did very well. I did not have the time to congratulate you before, but I tell you now that I am most pleased with your outcome and the one you set into motion. You and the other child did just as you were told. Very pleased." "My outcome?" His voice sounded harsh and raspy as if being drug across gypsum walls, but as she had said the pain was passing to the point of it being only the memory of pain. "What do you mean by my outcome? Where am I and why am I here?" The polite laugh was always so lithe and child like. A laugh that hinted at so much more. "You are dead. Nearly a year now. Do you remember your death or how it came to be? "What? I am not..." He had to pause, to try to recall, something. "...I don't. I was so thirsty. How did I die?" "That does not matter any longer. It was appointed for you to die at that moment and you did so as only someone who worships Ugath could. Did you get a chance to open the present I gave to you before you came to this place?" They both knew that he had not. "Do so now." He hesitated. "You are not who everyone thinks you are." "They heard and saw only what they needed to. What they wanted to. Who would honestly believe that they were called out here to fight? What did they tell themselves when no army ever came to assist? Only farmers and weavers. This place is here for one reason. My amusement. Our amusement. Do you know you have died before? In another age of another world. Everyone here has all come before and will come again. Open it." They were in his office. His old office. He walked over or did he walk, regardless he did not want to look down to see the answer. He did not have much time, but he wondered at that brief tirade. Dead before? It made no sense. He stuck his hand into the muck and pulled out a carefully prepared package. He returned to his seat and began to open it with trepidation. Inside was a tightly coiled metal spring that when pulled apart stretched out. There was something else, tucked within a small note. "It is called a slinky. Also from another age and time. A time where no dwarves exist. Read it." He pulled it out and read it. He smiled. It made sense. All of it made sense to him. He laughed, no longer caring that he was dead. She was smiling at his amusement. "Say it." As the last word passed his lips, they were both gone. The slinky falling onto the chair as the note flittered to land once more inside. "Bronzestabbed belongs to the dead."

I miss the days when a dwarf that created an artifact would carry it around for 3 years before releasing it to the common stores. And if he got into battle he'd use that artifact as a weapon. Sword, figurine, armor stand, door, whatever, it didn't matter, he'd start whaling on the enemy with it.
