1st Hematite

I order the militia to arm and equip themselves. The gates to the Typhus Memorial depot are opened, to lure the goblins within a narrow choke point where their superior numbers will be made useless. After perhaps half their forces enter the depot I will seal the outer and inner gates, trapping them. After the militia assembles, I will then open the inner gate, allowing the penned goblins to be slaughtered to the last. After our soldiers recover and are ready to fight, then we will repeat this task.

2nd Hematite

To keep civilians busy during this time I order more statues brought up to be placed in the dining room, to improve morale. The goblins loiter across the river, making no movement toward the fortress. I am patient. They will come sooner or later, I don't care how clever their elvish conspirators might be.

3rd Hematite

A magma crab has crawled up from the depths of the magma sea and terrorizes Zathril in the course of his duties. I dispatch the Bronze Delights to address what i hope is a minor threat. Axes solve most issues with uncooperative wildlife. It may be necessary to cover all magma-access with grates, and so I draft a Work Order.

I hope they hurry. The crab spits glob after glob of molten rock at Zathril, who dodges as best a dwarf can. Johnny Aztec and Jessant are both attacked by this annoying crab. Johnny Aztec is lightly bruised by the spinning basalt. Then, a hammerblow to the child's leg fractures the lower bone! This is the first play by the co-conspirators of TildeAth and Pickled Tink, enraging crabs and sending them to distract from the siege outside our doors!

4th Hematite

Speaking of, the goblins are drawing nearer to the fortress gates. Timing of the lever pulls is of high importance. Enough goblins must be caught to justify all the time, but not so much as to overwhelm the military. All the while, crabs below harry every dwarf near the forges. Revenant Threshold falls too close tot he crab, and it shatters her leg, then continues to fire glob after glob of rock at the helpless child. I can only hope the Bronze Delights can arrive in time to save her from the wicked crab.

Meanwhile, the first wave of goblins draw near the entrance of the Typhus Memorial Depot. I order Gnu Order to the roof of their barracks, to shoot down at the incoming goblins. Perhaps they will do some damage and soften up the fresher goblins for the defending militia. While I order the squads to start getting in defensive positions, word comes from the forges. Macha was first to reach the forges, and defeated the magma crab. According to the report hastily scribbled, Macha charged the crab, and finding her new axe very effective hacked off several limbs and sustained minor bruising before defeating the crab. She complained of her axe getting stuck several times and being forced to twist it free but I will let Krushdhead instruct her in preventative techniques. Revenant Threshold was unfortunately severely injured in the fray.

As the goblins begin to enter the Typhus Memorial Depot, only Sunbro and Pladdicus are on the roof and properly placed to loose bolts against the goblins. Genin somehow became confused, and despite orders to the contrary has taken up a place in the entrance hallway. While her bravery is impressive, the misapplication of an otherwise admirable trait will only lead to her death. The plan will not be altered.

For a moment, Genin is a whirlwind of dodging and blocking. Then, mid-roll, the goblin swordmaster Song Zomsmonge lops her foot off with a single blow of his heavy silver sword. While Genin fights for her life, Daeren has arrived with his crossbow atop the barracks, and his first bolt takes a macegoblin out of the fight for good. Every injury he inflicts will make it that much easier to break this siege through blood. I begin to order all other squads to assemble inside the depot, behind the first gate. More goblins are approaching.

The swordmaster doomed Genin. After the first wicked blow, every moment of the sadistic goblin wounds her deeply. Once her guts are out and bones shattered, she falls easy prey to the crowd of macegoblins surrounding her. Genin is brought first to her knees, then send to the Dark by an iron morningstar invading her skullcase. All because she refused to follow my orders to the letter.

7th Hematite

The trap is sprung! The stone bridges of the depot slam shut, trapping 23 somewhat injured goblin soldiers and two lords within. How disappointing it must have been, to see an easy path to our innocent children slammed shut in their faces. The shocked goblins outside are still subjected to bolt after bolt from Gnu Order, which should keep them occupied while the rest of the militia turns the depot into an abattoir.

Gnu Order continues to harass both the goblins milling at the gates and the approaching siege ogres, putting bolt after bolt into them. Some, like Synthorange and Wales Grey are using bone bolts, so the damage is superficial but it adds up over time. The forces outside will be significantly weaked, as long as the ammunition holds out. I am pleased that last month I began ordering copper bolts to be made, in order to diminish our overflowing stocks of the metal. They make a superior bolt in comparison to bone.

11th Hematite

Everyone is assembled. Now is the time to open the inner gates. The moment the stone drops, tehsid, Peas, Tyskil, Zebrin, Finagle, M and Barbarossa lead the charge. Very brave of them. The first exchange is a draw, shots are dodged, blocked and parried. M dodges, the second counterattack, while Arrhythmia tries to hack at the goblinoids, but is blocked. Apeynap gets the first injury of the skirmish, getting roughly kissed by a macegoblin's iron weapon. Luckily Apeynap recovers well, the next blow blocked with ease. Aston is close behind, his first blow cracking bone, while beside him Fatfingers receives such a strike, his hand shattering and shield clanging to the floor. tehsid is also hit, side battered and splattered with Genin blood from the same morningstar that took her life. Thankfully Three Phase the Neurotic is there, demonstrating why he is a captain by crippling the first goblin he lays blade upon.

The first wave over, Mr. Vile moves in, lopping off feet to enact a vengeful payback for the death of Genin. Peas follows his lead, jabbing his spear into feet and arms to cripple the goblin invaders. Second wind back, Arrhythmia shatters a hand with one kick, while Fatfingers bravely attacks with his one good hand, keeping goblins distracted. Apeynap flails, barely turning a skull-shattering blow into merely an ear-maiming injury - he is lucky to live through that. M draws blood at last, crippling the goblin with a brutal counterattack before following through by severing through the goblin's elbow! That is one way to disarm an enemy. Ton Ton joins in the slaughter, sending another goblin arm sailing toward the ceiling, as does Three Phase the Neurotic! Mr. Vile prefers to simply cut through the goblin's heart instead. Unfortunately, tehsid is also diarmed, a single blow shattering his hand and sending his shield to the ground. Limbs fly in all directions as goblins lose arms and legs.

Debonaire Dwarf is a little slow to the battle, but is no less fierce for it. His first blow sends his steel axe deep into a macegoblin's guts, spilling blood and viscera across the floor. Despite better experience, munk takes a silver mace to the leg and is instantly crippled, a followup blow shattering his arm as well. Despite being a Marksdwarf, Tyskil has had enough of seeing her comrades hurt and with a single punch shatters a mace goblin's skull like a rotten gourd. Fatfingers is also enraged, perhaps over her own injury, and bounces back by ripping out a goblin's lung with her axe. A good coping strategy. Another recruit, Teim, screws up the courage to attack and nearly cleaves a goblin's hand right off. Zebrin, despite leading the charge, became lost somewhere in the fray. After the initial shock of battle, though, she follows through like a champion and decapitates the first goblin she can find. Furious at being injured, Apeynap severs a goblin limb. While injuries are slowly mounting, the militia is winning.

Mad Wack arrives and puts his new adamantine sword to work, killing two goblins with ease. With his arrival, though, munk departs, giving in to pain. Steelbilly arrives also in this wave, crippling another goblin's limbs. Rawwking puts her spear through one goblin, Pierzak puts hers through another, as does Aston. Peas follows suit and ups the ante by severing a limb with his spear. Somehow Teim has gotten hold of one of the adamantine battle axes, and it carves a massive swath through the goblins, severing parts in all directions. I must acquire more adamantine and roll-out a new program to see every soldier better equipped. The lack of proper armor and weapons becomes acute when the Swordsmaster Goblin slashes Three Phase the Neurotic in the arm, causing his sword to fall to the ground. All squads turn their primary attention to the swordsmaster, finally recognizing the threat he poses.

Krushdhead finally enters the fray, one-shotting the goblin maceman that stands between her and the swordsmaster. Steelion ignors the danger, and piles on the swordsmaster, diverting his attention to parry the recruit's blows. The swordsmaster's comrade, an Axe Lord, leaps in and hacks at Peas, who is saved only thanks to armor. Pierzak remains focused, and scores a vital blow on the swordsmaster, sending his iron shield to the floor. Toiwat arrives just in time to get double fractures in his leg thanks to a silver flail, but woytaz has better luck and cripples a macegoblin. tehsid fights on while wounded, shattering a goblin's elbow, and the recruit Astus follows his lead, slicing open another goblins arm, nearly severing it. Orangesoda has no such luck though, and a single slash of the swordsmaster puts him on the ground bleeding out. Just as it looks like the Swordsmaster may go unopposed, Zeetoo strikes him down by jamming her crutch through his skull! :black101:

The remaining goblins are killed in a blood war of attrition. The results are ghastly - and when the last one falls I order all squads to stand down. The soldiers need to rest. When the last goblin dies, only Genin has been slain, but other wounds are dire.

It was a long battle.

13th Hematite

I order all squads to rest and recover after killing the last goblin inside our walls.

18th Hematite

While our wounded withdraw to the hospital, a Forgotten Beast, Cona Epipethemita arrives. He is made of snow and is trapped down in the caverns. He can rot there for all I care. While the soldiers draw back to the barracks, I order a new collection of features dug out. I read about this in the historical files I had researched during the NERF matter. By digging a gallery above the Depot and channeling through the floor, we can craft 'vertically positioned gravity-assisted projectile passby platforms' which will amplify the killing potential of our marksdwarves.

Pengiunoso, perhaps worried by the siege, gives birth to a baby boy. According to the GETIN forms, she has named his TunrpikeLad. Welcome to the fortress.

In addition to some new constructions, I couldn't help but notice out soldiers were not as well armored as they should be. I immediately file orders for more armor - the only thing we have in large quantities is bronze, but it beats spider silk for stopping blows. After that we have copper in abundance - once the bronze has run out armor of copper will be on the menu. Existing weapons are effective, but there is enough admantine in the spire to make much more. I order the spire to be mined and processed. Oski the Blademaker is the only dwarf qualified to work with the holy metal, and I place an order with him personally to begin work on spears, swords, and battle axes.

While I placed orders for new materials, it seems the siege has been lifted. Seeing their comrades be so thoroughly crushed must have been demoralizing.

Now that the saboteurs are imprisoned, I finally feel like I can take the fortress firmly in my hands. I can only pray that no devious, misguided, or traitorous dwarf sneaks down to pull the levers that will free them. I know that having two levers will confuse them - and that hesitation should keep them at bay.

I hope.

1st Malachite

Work ends on the Genin Memorial Murderhole, which is linked directly to the barracks of the Gnu Order for easy access. In addition to this, I am also extending a walkway out over the area bordering the Old Courtyard and the courtyard itself. Any force that enters our gates or loiters near will suffer a bevy of bolts from the sky. The soldiers injured in the last skirmish are in the hospital, and the goblin's armor and weapons have been collected. I will issue orders for some of the materials to be melted down - we need more valuable materials to better equip the militia.

4th Malachite

HONK HONK HONK has become trapped by a slightly overzealous love of building. I can only hope the rest of the outer walkway in completed before HONK HONK HONK dies an ignoble death from starvation.

12th Malachite

Orangesoda has yet to budge from where he fell after the battle. He is heavily injured, but has not gone to the hospital. No dwarf will help him, and he refuses to get up or drag himself to the hospital. I do not know why he will not rise up or call for help. This is not a moment for any dwarf to refuse help, particularly one of the all-important militia! A seasoned fighter is worth his weight in gold- I do not know why he cannot be made to budge.

I order a bed built on top of his head, and that suffices to get him moving at last.

16th Malchite

Somehow the forgotten beast managed to make its way into the fortress. I thought it was properly sealed off, but that goes to show that previous Overseers were insane, building such a disorganized warren. Or it was the co-conspirators of the traitors imprisoned in magma. Either way, it has just killed a war dog and is sulking in a chamber filled with innocent dwarves. Though they are injured, I have no choice but to dispatch the militia to handle this beast.

Luckily a member of the Walled Skies, lunnrais, is nearby. A single bronze bolt slays the beast with ease.

23rd Malchite

Seqway Rave has begun haunting the fortress. No doubt brought up by the arcane dealings of TildeATH or one of his conspirators. A few stone memorial slbas will neatly solve that problem. I put in the work order for them without delay.

4th Galena

A cloud of fiendish murk drifts nearby. I order all dwarfs inside, just in case. There has been enough bloodshed thus far.

6th Galena

The siege claims its first victim. munk has been found dead in his hospital bed, a victim of dehydration. Apparently the ravages to our medical system, also known as murked Doctore Appel, are dire. To think that so brave a dwarf should die so ignobly.

7th Galena

The coffins have been installed. Each coffin in the Crackmaster Cultural Vault has been made of the finest green glass by none other than myself. The use of glass allows every dwarf to look upon the faces of our heroes, that they might inspire even in death. I have had Wulles work silver over each one, to represent the shining purity of the lives within, while recognizing that no one dwarf is ultimate. We all serve a higher calling than ourselves - we serve our fortress, our race, our civilization.

In the niches on the walls I intend to install those that have fallen in honorable combat, in the order by which they arrived at this fortress. In the case that there is no body, there is room for slabs between each coffin. Perhaps in another generation this vault may be deepened, to make room for even more, this I cannot say.

Bad Munki heroically gave his life against the bush titan Kovest, but was incinerated in the process. His slab is the first to line the wall.
i poo poo trains was famed for his martial prowess, and only when wounded and set upon by an entire tribe could he be killed.
Nomikos also fell bravely against Kovest, and earns a place in the Vault.
SirPenguin was also slain by the titan, but was incinerated.
Psalmanazar shared this fate, but deserves a slab.
Idles was slain by siege ogres while bravely leading a squad.
Redransacker was also slain by Kovest.
La Croix was outmatched by a goblin axelord, but only as he was exhausted from killing the lord's retinue of ogres.
Haardrada is another victim of the titan, and is thus interred.
Geri Khan also fell to Kovest, and so earns her place in the vault.
Jonis Log82 were both recruits, but fought bravely against Kovest. They, too, will rest in the vault.
OhCrap was both an Overseer and a brave soldier, she will be honored with a coffin among other heroes. Her place on the wall of Overseers will remain empty.
MinorRed will rest beside her, as he fought with her against Kovest.
ToscaCake paid the ultimate price when a goblin invader deviously slew her from stealth. Rest well now in the vault.
Moonwalk received the wrath of a minotaur, now she can rest in the Vault.
neongray was slain in the caverns, fighting reptile men.
Willie Tomg is another hero that fought Kovest.
Dareon was just a recruit when lashers took him from us.
TremendousMajestic died to the all too common goblin.
Doc Melon, BlackGriffon, SourceElement and Fiddlers Three died to the same goblin siege. They will rest together.
FinalSin fought an ogre one on one and lost.
ValiantMan was not as good a shot as the goblins, sadly.

If I have made any errors, I would hope that the future overseers will seek to correct them. Likewise, let them place future heroes in this vault, that their deeds and faces will not be forgotten.

14th Galena

Now for the row of Overseers. OhCrap lies with the other heroes, and so her coffin her remains empty. Thadius was apparently from another world, to which he returned. So that coffin for him lies empty as well. I assign myself a coffin there, in order with my administration after Jazzimus. The coffins to the right of mine are unassigned, to be filled by future Overseers. I must look at getting historic plaques places before each one, to summarize each administration.

Another portion of the Crackmaster Cultural Vault is the placement and safe keeping of the various artifacts crafted by our divinely inspired craftsdwarfs. Therefore all artifacts not already constructed, such as certain floodgates and grates, are to be deposited therein. I cannot track all or them presently, but I set a pattern for future Overseers to add more artifacts.

In addition, historic statues are also an excellent addition. A row of them adds nicely to the educational aspects of the Crackmaster Vault. I personally select several from our stocks that help to encapsulate some of our history and culture.

19th Galena

A human caravan from Saquarpesor has arrived. Hopefully no siege will be on its heels.

26th Galena

Revenant Threshold is lost to infection. Magma crabs are serious business, and I am glad the forges are properly sealed at last.

27th Galena

Finally, Brannock arrives at the depot to trade with the humans. Metal, foodstuffs, seeds, any cloth they have - our demands are simple. If only they did not bring such large, oversize armor we might be in better shape.

My understanding is that LeJackal is putting significant effort into a Finale or Denouement or Postscript of some sort. I agree that it's time to end the turn. This one went really long: I made concessions due to high quality posts, holidays, and unexpected workplace violence, but I'm hopeful our next Overseer can get through a turn a bit faster.

I guess I didn't make it clear enough that was the end, I am sorry. I wish that I had been better able to complete my turn, but like so many things in life I was lucky to even limp to a finish.

I'm sorry.

Oh! Yeah, it kind of trailed off there, I guess I was expecting a last-day wrap up, since we'd talked about something along those lines a few days ago. Well, no worries.

Because this means it's time for a Call for Overseers!

As usual, I really want you to think carefully before you sign up. This is a really huge goddamn job. You're going to need several hours pretty much every night if you want to get reasonable updates done. There's something like 300+ dwarves in the fortress, with more potentially arriving (depending on how we manage the immigration cap). There's a lot of micro to do and you'll also need to take a ton of screenshots, crop/edit them, and also work to create a compelling narrative.

If you're up to the task, please fill out the form, here.
You can check on the list of applicants here.

As usual, as an overseer I ask that you produce an update for the thread about once every 48 hours (or less). You'll need to pace yourself so that you can finish within two or three weeks ideally - but the most important part is the regular updates. If you go 72 hours the thread gets antsy. If that happens twice, people will start calling for your head. So you really need to have plenty of free time for the next two or three weeks to do this!

I will select the overseer in approximately 24 hours.
