1st Granite, 245 Again and again, I have been tormented by these spirits. But no more! This is the last time! The queen thought she was so smart and clever, using her evil magic to manipulate me. Indeed, she did succeed in defiling all of the graves, but now her road is at an end. For trapped within these walls, the queen is powerless. She can’t leave the room without me unlocking the door and I can watch her through the windows to make sure she doesn't perform her spirit charming. This means I win! I loving win! Finally! Now I can focus on important matters! Such as drowning the surface in magma. Oddly enough work on the pumping project hasn’t been interrupted by the spirits, so it’s coming along nicely. It will still take a lot of work to complete though. No matter, I feel that I can accomplish anything now! 5th Granite, 245 Another dwarf was born today. Ceebees insists on carrying her baby Speleothing despite her role in the militia. I don't really care, but she better not complain if her bundle of joy gets skewered. Some dwarves have also gone missing. Arglebarlge was likely devoured by the murk zombies, but I don’t know what could of happened to Lorrdernie. No big loss though, so I'm not going to waste time figuring it out. 7th Granite, 245 Hehe, I haven't felt this good in a long time. I'm in total control of the fort now. The queen is locked up, the surface is inaccessible, and the caverns are under control. There’s nothing to interrupt my plans for once. To make things even better, that death trap hasn't been finished yet. With the queen locked up, it never will be. It was so close to being done as well! Lucky me. The queen feigns ignorance, claiming that she has no idea what I'm talking about. She can't fool me with her cave crocodile tears though. I know she has been responsible for this entire mess. Once the magma pump is complete, I will destroy the wasteland completely, and her dream of corrupting this fort will come to an end. 8th Granite, 245 I just realized I have made a terrible mistake. The pump stack is flawed. I had planned for it to be powered mechanically. However, an error in the design prevents this. The mechanics have informed me that in order for one pump to power the other, there must be a hole in the floor connecting them. As this is absent from the current design, I must have every pump deconstructed and replaced. Also this will cause a magma spill. A small one, but dangerous none the less. Still, so long as we approach this carefully I don’t believe it will be an issue. 11th Granite, 245 I took every necessary safety precaution to ensure that no dwarf would be injured by the small magma spill. Despite this, I was certain that someone would ignore my orders and get themselves killed. Shockingly, this did not happen. The pump was deconstructed without anyone melting in the spilled magma. All we have to do is wait for the remaining magma pools to drain away and then work on the pump can continue. 15th Granite, 245 While the surface is closed off, I cannot ignore it completely. A gate is not impenetrable, and I do not want to be surprised by something that can circumvent it. So I examined as much of the surface as I safely could from the gate house. The entrance is a rather gruesome sight. Dozens of corpses in various states of decay litter the ground. It would take weeks of dedicated work to get rid of them. Fortunately none of the dwarves seem too bothered by the lack of proper burial for the fallen. The remaining murk zombies are wandering around the entrance. They can't get inside right now, but I realize that in order to complete the magma pump some work must be done on the surface. At some point, we have to deal with these murk zombies. I'll try to delay that as long as possible though and look for a good moment to strike. Other than that, things are oddly calm. I come to expect more problems from this place, but this month has been quite peaceful. 17th Granite, 245 Maybe I was wrong about there being no problems. A dwarf named Spikey hasn't been seen for a while. I have no idea where he could have gone. How are you supposed to find one dwarf in this place? It's a mess. I was going to go tear up the queen's room looking for anything evidence of her involvement with evil, but I couldn't even find it. It's hard to locate anything outside of the main area. 22nd Granite, 245 Well I can't say I was expecting this. A large crowd had gathered around Ayana, who had just shot Brannock and killed him instantly. Of course I demanded to know why the hell she shot him in the first place. She claimed that Brannock suddenly snapped and lunged at her. She was just standing her ground, so she claims. Brannock had been rather mopey lately, but for him to go from depressed to psychotic so quickly seems odd. I feel like Ayana may have been drunk and just shot him by mistake. Nobody saw what happened though, so I guess she gets to walk free. 27th Granite, 245 I don't understand! This nonsense with spirits was supposed to end with the queen imprisoned! Yet now more than ever I’m getting reports of a ghastly figuring drifting through the fort. Many dwarves claimed to have seen some sort of ghost, as absurd as that sounds. I'd doubt them, but I saw it myself the other day...it took on the form of Vox Nihili, as if it was mocking me. If the queen isn't responsible for the spirits- no, I KNOW she must be involved. It’s true I’ve yet to observe her doing anything suspicious, and indeed she truly seems clueless about everything related to the murk, but I can't be wrong! There just has to be more to this! I'm not stupid! I can figure this out! I just need more time to...think

Text Analysis Time! What's been happening to dwarves at Bronzestabbed? For those of you who aren't familiar with Natural Language Processing, there's a fun little web-accessible tool here: http://voyant-tools.org ...that you can drop any text into (such as the "Fate" column of the Dwarfing List, but also the entire text of all the Overseer Entries and journal entries, if someone had those laying around) and get all sorts of word trends and frequency analysis and concordances.

Well I drove 600 miles today, so I'm in a mental state not too dissimilar to being drunk, but now I can get the dwarfing list caught up. Tilde, you should re-run that thing tomorrow, since the list is missing all the deaths that have happened since last Wednesday evening. Also sometimes when one thing kills a lot of dwarves I get lazy and just use the same description for them all. So I'm sure that affects things too. But it looks like I've been over-using the word "slain", I'll have to do something about that.

I tried running the entire thread through that, but it looks like the paywall's up. It ended up reading 138 versions of the "please register" screen. I was only curious to see how many times "Munki" is mentioned, when compared to "dwarf" or "murk".

Special thanks to philoiz, who put all the Overseer entries into a text file. The hardest part of data analysis is building the dataset, and without diligent un(der)paid graduate students, we'd never have awesome things like this! So, what's the story of Bronzestabbed to this point? It's Dwarf Fortress, Leperfish style! But more than that, it is a tale dominated by Bronzestabbed, a fortress beset by murk. From the beginning, this strange phenomenon dominates the minds of overseers. Of course, something else comes to dominate the minds of overseers. And what of those overseers, can they influence the story with their petty vendettas? No, not really. Only the murk and magma and adamantite can keep the minds of dwarves occupied. But what of the characters of Bronzestabbed, do they come to prominence in this story? Only Leperfish can claim to hold a dominance in the psyche of Bronzestabbed. So, remember, when an overseer is being dragged through the fortress in triumph, a chained kobold walks behind him, whispering "All fame is fleeting." And then they're covered in magma, or locked into a hidden chamber, or eaten by murk zombies. tl;dr: Stop being lazy, go back and read it--there aren't that many words and there are pictures.

Now that is something new and OP worthy!
