Arglebargle IV Esq.

Hail overseer! I extend to you my warmest reproach and most gentle rebuke upon this, your first of no doubt many victories. Truly, today's actions represent only the smallest of errors, the least of misdeeds an Overseer may commit, to whit, the deaths of military men in battle, for which only the tiniest mote of blame may fall upon him. An almost auspicious beginning, of which an overseer may almost be proud, which is an accomplishment indeed! However, such nearly-shameless victories are not what I wish to discuss at this, the least inappropriate moment I could manage. Many tiny apologies, but I must report:

The overseer's new wall is a shameful wall. Bronzestabbed has the guts of a proud fortress and does not deserve shameful anythings, especially on its tender outsides. Please accept my humblest recriminations. I have used my meager stonecrafting skills to knock together this, the simplest of models for the facilitation of said recrimination activities. It is encrusted with olivine cabochons and menaces with spikes of gabbro. I am the least displeased with these bands of diorite here, which represent the walls in a way that is almost satisfying.

As you can see, the wall isn't complete yet which you probably know. However, there's also the matter of fortifying this new wall, which hasn't been done or even started and is thus incomplete. The southern courtyard has always been lacking in bigness and, as ballistae are big, and adequate courtyards house ballistae, the southern courtyard was never adequate. But the new courtyard has a surplus of bigness, to the point that it is not small enough to exclude the placement of ballistae! As you can see, ballista positions are outlined in blue for your convenience. Also, this moat needs to be extended. As you know, moats are chiefly valued for their length, and this being a moat deficient in length, it will be unsatisfactory until such time as it becomes long. Happily, the moat will become self-flooding if extended all the way along the wall. If this has always been your intention, please excuse yourself from an appropriate fraction of the shame you should be experiencing as you view the current state of the wall.

As your observent overseeing eyes may have noticed, apprehended, and hopefully comprehended, there is a small soapstone stairwell in the crook of the wall. This is so intentional as not to be an accident! I only hope to convey the existence of the second level which, no doubt, you already have planned. I do not know what form this corner tower, second wall level, walkway, and fortifications will take, nor can I predict where exactly you will place the ammunition bins. As such the staircase is merely a signifier, a sign, even a prophecy, if you will; one which I hope may have more predictive power than, for example, a stoat, which is not known to have any and thus may be said to have almost none.

Upon listening to these recriminations, I hope you feel you have mitigated in some small way the shame you are no doubt experiencing. Do not be too hard on yourself. In listening, you are a Good Overseer and no doubt you will go on to build a Good Wall, which, as everyone knows, is a thing which is so good as to be almost completely not bad.

Your Almost Entirely Loyal Servant, Arglebargle IV Esq.;
Nearly Adequate Stonecrafter

"Fatfingers" Stibmernish, 26 Timber 244

The goblins are plague. They come and come, they hide and pick their time well, and then we fight. They bring nothing but darkness. Why do they not just go back and leave us alone? My family may not want me to be a warrior-dwarf, but for the sake of my husband and our community I take up axe and show our enemies how strong I am. Bronzestabbed is strong and I will be strong with it. Forever BWFC, I must keep you safe.

In battle I saw Mr. Vile fight. He holds our most precious metal, destroys all our enemies with it, but it dropped. I came to help him! Maybe the others will notice. I will show all that I am not just a simple farmer. I am alright at fighting. I hold skill. I am angry for all our mothers and children they capture or strike down before our eyes like Van Kraken and his mother, Hardboiled. More heads will fly off if they have to.

At least we're not the Thalmor (yet)

28th Timber
Mr. Vile limps back into the fortress. I insist he goes to the hospital, but grins and tells me not to worry, he'll be fine. I hope he is right.

On my way back, new migrant Arglebargle IV Esq. informs me that there is a hole in the wall and the moats are not done. I inform him I was aware, and should he question me again, he will take one of the fallens' places in the military.

(I'd been using the hole in the wall as a means to allow merchants escape while the bridge was under construction, and I've had a bug in one of my own fortresses where the merchants became obsessed with taking an exit that I had blocked, and the wagons collapsed like an accordian until everyone went crazy and FUN happened. So, especially with the dwarven caravan inbound, I didn't want to take that chance.)

I do order the gap filled, but the moat is low priority.

1st Moonstone
The gap is being filled, and I pull my cloak close as I feel the chill of winter setting in as night falls. I do not believe we will be threatened for some time by goblins, but the murk is always a danger.

In the meantime, the dwarves of Bronzestabbed begin the process of cleaning up the battlefield, recovering weapons and the dead.

8th Moonstone
Some of the hunters have informed me that to the west one of the caravan guards remains, Logem Itdunoslan. He has no wounds. I do not know why he either does not leave for the Mountainhomes, as the Caravan fled when the goblins attacked, or come to live with us and join our military, but this is his matter.

As I lay to sleap, I hear medical intern Tirius enter my chambers and remove my plate from eating by my throne. He replaces it with a worn out troll fur shoe. I do not know the symbolism of this gesture.

I have been here for three months, but I rarely mingle with the others. My only friend remains Stinthad, my loyal puppy, who followed me here.

9th Moonstone
I am informed by some of the animal tamers that a donkey has been missing for a week. It may have been killed by the goblins when they sieged our fortress. Still, it is only a beast, and not a dwarf.

11th Moonstone
I still fret over Mr. Vile's condition, but the child SubNat walks by me, talks to the dwarf, then assists him down to the hospital. I know not what the child said.

(At some point, I de-zoned and re-zoned the hospital. Maybe they weren't seeing it as a valid place for wounded :iiam:)

I also see that the outer walls are nearly complete, with the last segment almost done.

13th Moonstone
Nurse Shorter Than Some finishes his diagnosis of Mr. Vile. When I inquire about it, he tells me that there was 'nerve damage', but infection did not set in, and the swordsdwarf should be fine- except he may never be able to grasp the hilt of a sword again.

He may not be dead, but we may have been robbed of one of our greatest warriors. This is a set back.

19th Moonstone
Mr. Vile has insisted on re-diagnosis several times, and each time the doctors have told him the same thing. Finally, he leaves the hospital with a crutch. I pray he will be able to recover from this terrible blow to his psyche.

21st Moonstone
The Monument construction proceeds well ahead of pace, the entire fortress population of metalsmiths laboring in its construction. It is truly a beautiful sight.

I would render a sketch here, but as beautiful as it is now, it will be so much more when it is completed, and I would not spoil the effect.

M is busy practicing in the Queens' statue garden with his adamantine battle axe, admiring its shape and perfection, telling of how he slew an ogre during the battle with it.

23rd Moonstone
Mr. Vile is seen eating in the dining hall, his sword recovered and in his hand. I would inquire as to his capabilities to fight, but despite his friendly nature, he is also quick to anger.

brute leaves his workshop for the first time in weeks. I had noticed he didn't seem to be completing his Artifact, and sketches of uncut gems were seen. There were a few in the walls that hadn't been mined out, so I ordered them, hoping to prevent Catastrophe.

24th Moonstone
brute storms into his workshop, gem in hand, and furiously sets to work. I am relieved. There has been enough dwarven death recently.

Arglebarlge IV Esq., the interfering migrant, constructs what he calls a 'masterpiece' craft. Unfortuntately, it is NOT a figurine, which is what I want made.

26th Moonstone
I am informed that the captive giant cave spider has gone completely wild, despite me ordering Geekkake to train it. This is unacceptable.

28th Moonstone
brute emerges from the mason workshop confused and senseless, but inside is a malachite throne. It bears the bones of goblins. Clearly, this throne is fitting for Bronzestabbed's ruler, and thus I give it to Queen Sankis.

1st Opal

It occurs to me that I never actually opened the floodgates so water would flow to the lower well. What with goblins, ensuring our continued Protection against the Enemies, fighting off said Enemies, and the start of construction on The Monument, it had just slipped my mind.

I order the lever pulled, in any case.

3rd Opal

I walk through the catacombs and stop in one room. All the dead from the last battle are intombed in one single room. Magrov, Hardboiled, and Van Kraken are all interred, and coffin space has been designated for Rothon, but his corpse is still at the bottom of the pool we discovered it in. I order a slab engraved for him, to be placed in his memory, in the event we are not able to recover his corpse.

7th Opal

Listening at the well, one can hear the water flowing beneath.

I am informed that one Improbable Lobster has made a masterpiece. I look through the fortress records and discover that he is merely a child. Why children are laboring in the workshops is unknown to me, as it is not proper. But he is renowned as a legendary craftsdwarf and the maker of Elbowdoctrines, a legendary artifact. Perhaps it is more improper to stop him?

8th Opal

In the dining hall, I spy a guineacock belonging to Vaga24Bond, walking with a broken leg. I am concerned as to how it was injured, and resolve to question its owner about it.

9th Opal

A stray ewe is reported missing by the animal caretakers. I wonder if this is something more serious than animals vanishing after the battle. I will get to the bottom of this.

10th Opal

I notice Ugathville has a good amount of foliage growing in it. Though I do not believe they had anything to do with the death of ZeeToo, any more growth may represent a threat. I order them clear-cut for the safety of the Ugathers who still live there.

11th Opal

Ikubi Akius has decided that our soldiers need a better boot. Not boots, as in several, but A boot. I have a feeling we'll be able to meet his request.

14th Opal

According to the record books, today is the first birthday of Urist Ushilmeng. There is no Urist Ushilmeng, but there is a Darval Ushilmeng. I send congragulations all the same.

15th Opal

I notice the above ground pool has frozen. I scurry to find the miners, and eventually find OrangeSoda. I order them to dig out the area where Rothon's corpse is in the hopes of recovering his body before the thaw.

18th Opal

The thaw happens as quickly as it began, and the body of Rothon remains at the bottom of the pool.

21st Opal

GrabbinPeels, a peasant, is reported to be the one who keeps applying Bad Munki to be overseer. I order him to serve in the military as punishment.

25th Opal

Asen Oilleaf is marked as this being his first birthday, but again, it is an apparent mislabeling of Oberndorf.

In the meantime, I have noticed a trapped entrance begun by a previous overseer to lure enemies into a death corridor. I believe, with the Monument nearly done, finishing construction on it would be quite satisfactory.

28th Opal

This latest issue has me confused, and I shall clear my head at the forges.

All the reports of missing animals (and believe me journal, there are more than I can stand to document) have led to me to believe that perhaps a dwarf is running a secret butcher shop, or perhaps we have been infiltrated by our enemies.

Nearly every dwarf has been accounted for, except for two- two children, TildeATH and Pickled Tink. Nobody has seen them in many months, but their corpses have not been discovered.

I send word to my predecessor, LeJackal, that I wish to discuss the matter, as I cannot imagine the children have survived this long. The notes are clear- they went missing during his term, and he built a massive stone vault that nobody knows what it holds, and is inaccessible.

I'm sure the two things are unrelated.

I made it clear that while I was unsure as to why it was injured (Maybe it was one of the trainers "training" it?), I can easily account for why it was still injured: Given the lack of any form of animal handlers or trainers who seem to do anything (How did they let a GIANT CAVE SPIDER go feral?), I felt it was safer limping around rather than in the care of those idiots who would probably let it go feral AND get murked.
