36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(A) and Messiah.”(B)

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(C)

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(D) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(E) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(F) 39 The promise is for you and your children(G) and for all who are far off(H)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(I) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(J) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(K) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(L) and to prayer.(M) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(N) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(O) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(P) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(Q) They broke bread(R) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(S) And the Lord added to their number(T) daily those who were being saved.

37 Now when they heard this, (A)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

38 Then Peter said to them, (B)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [a]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (C)to your children, and (D)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

A Vital Church Grows

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [b]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [c]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (E)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [d]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and (F)many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and (G)had all things in common, 45 and [e]sold their possessions and goods, and (H)divided[f] them among all, as anyone had need.

46 (I)So continuing daily with one accord (J)in the temple, and (K)breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And (L)the Lord added [g]to the church daily those who were being saved.

36 “Now therefore the whole nation of Israel must know beyond the shadow of a doubt that this Jesus, whom you crucified, God has declared to be both Lord and Christ.”

The reaction to Peter’s speech

37 When they heard this they were cut to the quick, and they cried to Peter and the other apostles, “Men and fellow-Jews, what shall we do now?”

38-39 Peter told them, “You must repent and every one of you must be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ, so that you may have your sins forgiven and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For this great promise is for you and your children—yes, and for all who are far away, for as many as the Lord our God shall call to himself!”

40 Peter said much more than this as he gave his testimony and implored them, saying, “Save yourselves from this perverted generation!”

The first large-scale conversion

41-42 Then those who welcomed his message were baptised, and on that day alone about three thousand souls were added to the number of disciples. They continued steadily learning the teaching of the apostles, and joined in their fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayer.

43-47 Everyone felt a deep sense of awe, while many miracles and signs took place through the apostles. All the believers shared everything in common; they sold their possessions and goods and divided the proceeds among the fellowship according to individual need. Day after day they met by common consent in the Temple; they broke bread together in their homes, sharing meals with simple joy. They praised God continually and all the people respected them. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were finding salvation.

36 assuredly, therefore, let all the house of Israel know, that both Lord and Christ did God make him -- this Jesus whom ye did crucify.'

37 And having heard, they were pricked to the heart; they say also to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, `What shall we do, men, brethren?'

38 and Peter said unto them, `Reform, and be baptized each of you on the name of Jesus Christ, to remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,

39 for to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all those afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call.'

40 Also with many more other words he was testifying and exhorting, saying, `Be saved from this perverse generation;'

41 then those, indeed, who did gladly receive his word were baptized, and there were added on that day, as it were, three thousand souls,

42 and they were continuing stedfastly in the teaching of the apostles, and the fellowship, and the breaking of the bread, and the prayers.

43 And fear came on every soul, many wonders also and signs were being done through the apostles,

44 and all those believing were at the same place, and had all things common,

45 and the possessions and the goods they were selling, and were parting them to all, according as any one had need.

46 Daily also continuing with one accord in the temple, breaking also at every house bread, they were partaking of food in gladness and simplicity of heart,

47 praising God, and having favour with all the people, and the Lord was adding those being saved every day to the assembly.
