Study title
Experiences with being asked about place of origin
(IRBNet ID 1522006-1)
Study purpose and rationale
People often ask each other "Where are you from?" In this study, we investigate what experiences people have with being asked this. If people from various social backgrounds experience the question differently, it would be useful to know this in order to avoid miscommunication.
Inclusion/exclusion criteria
Participants must be 18 or older.
Participation prodecure and duration
Participants will answer an online survey; answering these questions is expected to take no longer than 10 minutes.
Data anonymity
All data will be maintained as anonymous, and no identifying information such as names will appear in any publication or presentation of the data. There is no reason to expect any risk of data breach (which could theoretically allow a third party to trace participants by means of their IP address) to be greater than during other routine online activities.
Storage of data and data retention period
The survey will remain open for a period no longer than one year. During this time, survey responses will remain in the principal investigator's password-protected Qualtrics account. When we close the survey, we will download the survey data onto the principal investigator's password-protected laptop and delete it from Qualtrics. We will remove IP addresses from the downloaded data and store separately the e-mail addresses provided by any participants who indicated that they want us to send them the study results; therefore, no identifying information will remain. The data in this form will remain on the principal investigator's laptop for five years.
Risks or discomforts
This survey is not expected to result in discomfort greater than that experienced in routine daily interaction.
Benefits
If you choose to indicate that you would like us to send you the results of the study, they may deepen your understanding of interaction, especially in intercultural contexts.
Voluntary participation
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you are free to stop answering questions at any point in this survey for any reason without penalty or prejudice from the investigator. Please feel free to ask any questions of the investigator.
