Nourishing East Africa in a post-COVID 19 world - pathways and challenges in building sustainable value chains for the Africa rice sector
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is pleased to invite you to deliver a High Level Introduction at the Independent Food Systems Dialogue “Nourishing East Africa in a post-COVID 19 world - pathways and challenges in building sustainable value chains for the Africa rice sector,” to be held on 29 July 2021, 1400-1700H East Africa time (1200-1500H BST) via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The dialogue is co-convened by the Africa Rice Center, the Agricultural Policy Research in Africa Programme of the Future Agricultures Consortium, the Centre for African Bio-Entrepreneurship, the Coalition for African Rice Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

It brings together a range of stakeholders—from policymakers, ministry officials, academicians and scientists, community leaders and value chain actors—to identify and create pathways to sustainable value chains that meet domestic and regional demand for high quality, safe, climate-resilient, and nutritious rice-based agri-food systems.

The dialogue consists of two parts: a) an online public forum with stakeholders and experts at the regional level and b) breakout sessions where participants can discuss key themes.

Breakout sessions
The dialogue consists of two parts: a) an online public forum with stakeholders and experts at the regional level and b) breakout sessions where participants can discuss the guide questions noted below:

Session 1: Responding to crises: challenges and opportunities for growth
How has the Africa rice sector responded to multiple global crises, including the 2007-2008 food crisis and the current COVID-19 pandemic, and what lessons can we learn in order to build back better?
How can we ensure that current country strategies are responsive to future crises?

Session 2: Partnerships and policies for inclusive value chain upgrading
What policy and partnership support is needed to expand the hidden middle of value chains in an inclusive and sustainable way?
What evidence do policymakers and multisectoral partners respond to in order to develop the necessary policies and programs in response to these crises and to the surging increase in imports?

Session 3: Centering nutrition and health in the agri-food system
Do stakeholders consider nutrition and health as a key outcome of the agri-food sector?
How can we shift stakeholder perspectives towards integrating nutrition and health in agricultural activities and research?
