All terrain four wheeled wheelbarrow

Our client, Peter, has a spinal cord injury which has adversely affected his right limbs. He lives on a large property on the Fleurieu Peninsula and required a very stable four wheeled, all terrain, tipping wheelbarrow.

The wheelbarrow had to have handles set quite high as Peter is very tall and has difficulty bending. He would also be leaning down through these handles and relying on them to support some of his weight as he moves the barrow around so a cross section that extended between the handles similar to what you would see on a shopping trolley suited Peter’s needs. The wheels needed to be quite large in order to manage the rough terrain on Peter’s property.

TADSA Volunteer John Stevens (pictured below) undertook the project. He built the frame from scratch and bought a light weight barrow tray. The finished wheelbarrow has a brake and a locking mechanism to stop the tray from tipping.

Assistive Technology in your NDIS plan

Assistive Technology (AT) may be included in your NDIS plan if it is identified as a reasonable and necessary support.

The NDIA has four levels to describe the complexity of Assistive Technology and this will often influence how it is funded in a participant's plan. More about those levels at the NDIS Assistive Technology Frequently Asked Questions page.

Work with your NDIS planner or local area coordinator to get these AT items into your plan.

Please give us a call at TADSA on 1300 663 243 (local call) to find out if we can help you with your AT needs.

Rotary Club of Campbelltown

Last month TADSA CEO Nick Carusi spoke at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Campbelltown.
The Club has been a supporter of TADSA for many years including a $5,000 donation in 2015 toward updating TADSA’s website.
Nick talked about the work of TADSA and our fantastic volunteers.
At the end of the presentation he was presented with a cheque for $2,000 by the Club's Director Community Vince Belperio. Nick is pictured with Vince and the Club’s President Babu Kanagasabai.

Lifter for boat

John Stevens made a lifter to enable Kevin to be lifted from his wheelchair onto / off of his speedboat. For several years Kevin’s mates have manhandled (lifted, pulled and jerked) him to and from the boat. Kevin purchased a second hand battery operated ceiling hoist which attaches to the mast of the lifter and he operates the up and down movement himself. The mast is inserted into a divot that is permanently attached to the boat trailer by a beam which goes from one side of the “A” frame to the other. All his mates have to do is set up the mast then when Kevin is high enough to clear the top of the boat, turn the mast 180 degrees, using a lever inserted into one of the holes in the mast. His mates will be happier than Kevin and he was really happy with what John has provided.

Virtual Reality - a Game Changer for people with disabilities

The Endeavour Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation in Queensland helping people with intellectual disability to live their best life.  They focus on starting with equal access to education and life-skills learning.

Recently, the Foundation launched a series of virtual reality experiences to teach people with intellectual disabilities how to go about everyday experiences. The three most popular in their series are pedestrian safety, warehouse safety and a barista scene.  In the barista scene you can learn, and practice, how to make a cup of coffee using the virtual simulation.

This form of learning is seen by the Foundation as a game changer.  You can watch the video here>>
