Sustainability work strives to increase opportunities that enhance human wellbeing. Opportunities for wellbeing depend on access to food, housing, clean air and water, security, political freedom, health care, education, electric power, transportation, relationships with other species and with well-functioning ecosystems.

I pledge to use less energy by

Doing the basics - turning lights off when not needed (Bard uses efficient LED lighting but it's a good habit to save energy), washing clothes with cold water, etc.

Traveling differently - walking, biking, electric scooting or taking the shuttle instead of using a car; using ZipCar instead of bringing a car, using Bard 511NY ride sharing (and restricting use of single occupancy cars is one of THE MOST effective ways to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality).

Eating lower on the carbon footprint food chain by reducing red meat consumption. Unsustainable meat production contributes to 20% of US greenhouse gas pollution.

Bard's free store: something new every visit!

I pledge to re-use by

Putting unwanted items (like clothes, shoes, dorm decor) in my hall's blue re-use bin

Visiting the free store, "FreeUse" (to get items for FREE!!!! And because we need to change the culture of a disposable society)

Using my Sustainability Kit - kit contains a re-usable shopping tote, small tuperware, utensil set and a travel cup). BYO favorite water bottle.

I pledge to reduce waste by

Composting (Bard composts onsite! Any uneaten food at Kline gets turned into black gold - trims our waste and helps the climate). You can compost in your hall by request but it will take some extra effort.

Recycling paper, cardboard, containers in the recycle bin, in addition to keeping from the Landfill button batteries, dead cell phones, ink jet cartridges and plastic bags (Bard-Es can help tell you where these can go).

Oh, and I promise to remember that PAPER CUPS are not recyclable - they're usally PLA-PER (plastic/paper blend). If I have to use one, I'll put it in the LANDFILL bin.

Getting involved in clubs, groups and programs like the Citizens' Climate Lobby, BardEATS, Center for Civic Engagement, Sustainability Council or creating a sustainability club

Hiking the Saw Kill (that creek provides our drinking water), biking to the V. of Red Hook, leaving FreeUse better than I found it, trying to be low waste at Kline, picking up trash when I see it, and more.
