Social Workers United for Immigration
Mission Statement: Founded in 2017, we are a network of social workers committed to the well-being and the advancement of immigrants and immigrant rights. We believe in a micro, mezzo and macro approach in responding to immigrants’ needs. Together, we envision access to resources for immigrants, an immigration movement where social workers stand strong alongside immigrants and allies at the local, state and federal levels, and collaboration among social workers that includes peer support, and educational opportunities. We are DC metro area based but the group is a national network.

________
History: The idea to connect with other social workers interested in immigration issues emerged when the group's founder, Cheryl A. LICSW, LCSW-C attended a local rally and saw one of her social worker friends there. Together, they wondered how many other social workers were at the rally and wondered what it would look like to be at other actions under a unified social worker banner. The group started with endorsement and back of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Washington, DC Chapter as one of their interest group. The first meeting was held October 3, 2017 at NASW offices in DC. Fifteen social workers participated. Since then, monthly meetings started to be organized under Social Worker United for Immigration. The network is currently independent and partners with social work organizations. Since its first meeting, our network has grown close to 200 people. We have mobilized social workers to attend immigration actions in person and or line and have led advocacy campaigns. Our model is of shared group leadership and we value the contributions of all members involved.
